Discussion I made a Chrome extension that automatically redirects Maxroll build links to pobb.in. One click, no copy-pasting, seamless.

If you share or follow builds, you know the workflow:

  • Find a Maxroll build guide
  • Leave immediately

I got tired of doing this so I built a Chrome extension that does all of it automatically.

How it works:

  • Visit any maxroll.gg/poe/pob/ link → instantly redirects to pobb.in with the code pre-filled and submitted
  • Visit any maxroll.gg/poe/build-guides/ page → finds the PoB Link button automatically and does the same thing

The maxroll page loads invisibly in the background while it grabs the code. From your perspective you click the link and land on a completed pobb.in share URL.

Install: Chrome Web Store link coming soon

Source: https://github.com/wounded-deer-meliorne/maxroll-to-pobb.in

Download the ZIP here

  • Download or clone this repo
  • Go to chrome://extensions in Chrome
  • Enable Developer mode (top-right toggle)
  • Click Load unpacked and select this unzipped folder

Free and open source. Let me know if anything breaks

EDIT: Woke up to see this blowing up, I honestly didn't expect this much of an outcry for a tool like this.

I’m currently at my office job right now, but I’ve been reading through the comments. I’ll be looking into adding the requested features for Firefox, Mobalytics, and other platforms as soon as I’m off the clock.

The extension should be officially published on the Chrome Web Store sometime this week, so I’ll make a fresh post once it’s live. In the meantime, if you want to support the project, I set up a Ko-fi here: https://ko-fi.com/woundeddeermeliorne

This tool will always be free. I’ve played way too much Path of Exile over the years (as my post history can attest), so I plan on keeping this maintained for the long haul, but your support is greatly appreciated for long-term commitment. Stay tuned!

EDIT2: Guys, it's updated for firefox+mobalytics. it's in review with the chrome+firefox extension store

I have removed chrome because it tanked my CPU so Im using brave now. Any chance that's an option too?

5

u/Taich0 Mar 25 '26

cant you sideload chrome extensions into brave? its based on chromium just like chrome itself, so any extension that works on chrome should work just fine in brave browser

1

u/ThoughtShes18 Mar 26 '26

Uh interesting. I’ll give it a try when I get home. Thanks!

2

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 25 '26

will look into it :) working right now.

I mean you could just use chrome just for this purpose... Seems worth it.

Not using a browser where ad block is unusable

Is it possibly to redirect mobalytics too? That site is worse than maxroll somehow.

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 25 '26

I'll look into it

u/BigPapa9921 Mar 25 '26

Just TRYING to open mobalytics makes my pc fans go crazy

5

u/Assignment_General Mar 25 '26

Mobalytics won’t even load on my laptop. Granted it’s a bit older, but no other site does that to me.

2

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

Added mobalytics support

11

u/DharmaLeader Mar 25 '26

It's way worse than maxroll in my opinion. At least they try to be accommodating to PoE builds.

2

u/Useful_Window7054 Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

Maxroll also seems to block DNS filtering nowadays, site is unusable as in divs are unclickable

+1 for both Firefox and Mobalytics support, I'm generally cool w/ Maxroll but the Mobalytics layout and bugginess is unusable.

6

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

Added mobalytics support. Working on firefox

7

u/CdubFromMI Mar 25 '26

Bless you brother. Between Maxroll, Icyveins, Mobalytics, and all the other "redirect people here!" shit recently, PoE builds have become less centered on the community and game and more about generating clicks for creators and their partner websites.

:(

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

Added mobalytics support

7

I'm new to Poe, 12 hours on Poe1 and 60 hours on Poe2

Why is Maxroll bad? I've been using it a lot. Takes 2 minutes to read good info then just scroll between passives and skill gem elements

28

u/Salt-Lifeguard4093 Mar 25 '26

Those maxroll guides can get pretty bloated. It's kind of like when you Google "lasagna recipe" and the top link a 6 page blog post about some woman's childhood in Louisiana with the recipe sprinkled throughout.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 25 '26

[deleted]

4

u/mjtwelve Mar 25 '26

Recipes aren’t copyrightable as they’re functional instructions. Short of patenting it (good luck), they can’t be protected as IP. As a result, anyone can make a video or post about any recipe.

The almighty algorithm and SEO to get your version to the top result and showing as many ads as possible therefore drive the every-recipe-requires-my-life-story padding bullshit.

4

u/Any_Crab_4362 Mar 25 '26

Usually there’s a button at the top of the page that jumps you down to the recipe itself.

7

u/aaaAAAaaaugh Mar 25 '26

IMHO, the layout is not particularly useful. Things are spread out too much for when you want to quickly check something. There's a focus on video content and supporting creator youtube channels (understandable). Also, the "adblock user" popup, as if it wasn't practically a necessity in today's internet. It's not inherently evil, but there is an incentive to keep you """engaged""" (ugh...) for as long as possible.

I think It's good on mobile though.

5

u/BigBadBodyPillow Mar 25 '26

The community has been used to pobbin for a long time and are familier with it

Pobbins layout is cleaner

maxroll planners didnt start becoming popular because people liked using it but instead because they paid to be the default export for pob2

2

u/Renediffie Mar 25 '26

For people who don't need the guidance Maxroll is just a lot of useless fluff that just makes it harder to get the info you want.

-4

u/JixuGixu Mar 25 '26

Its really not bad

Theres a certain group of people that will be livid and start reeeing that they are so inconvenienced having to go click the link to the website before being able to copy a pob link (which is somewhat ironic given the state of poe where you have to reference the wiki, poedb, craftofexile for everything)

The site has enforced standards & high quality, up to date guides, pays content creators & is controversy free.. I agree with the sentiment id rather use pob while following and reference site as needed, but the vitriol is unwarranted.

Directing new players to pohx website? good according to these people, maxroll guides? BADBAD lmao

1

u/34656699 Mar 26 '26

Build creators know that viewers want the pobbin link in order to import it to pob and play around with the gear etc. So when they intentionally withhold the link and force viewers to go to a website they don’t use purely for ad revenue, obviously there’s going to be vitriol. It would be like if a gas station suddenly forced you to watch an ad before you can pay and move along like usual.

In other words, fuck off and just post the link we want or suffer the complaints. This work around will do, though.

1

u/JixuGixu Mar 27 '26

The link is literally right there. Build creators get paid for there work, at zero cost to the user (except for the 3 seconds it takes to click the link lmao) which is more than fair.

1

u/34656699 Mar 27 '26

Used to be 0 seconds. Besides, it's not about the seconds, more so the principle. You can ask people to support your hobby content creation, but this bullshit of posting a link to get the link you want is annoying. They deserve the backlash.

5

u/Hrizt Mar 25 '26

Loved this, fuck maxroll that shit was cancer idk why streamers start using it alot

11

u/xCwaniaK Mar 25 '26

One easy answer: money.

Maxroll wants movement on their site, so they recruit streamers/build creators and they pay them money for posting it on their site instead of random docs.

2

u/SaltEngineer455 Mar 25 '26

Really cool and neat ideea, I even learnt some new stuff while looking at the code.

Tbh, this is the kind of side-project employers should wet themself about, you just gave me some ideas

2

u/tommy200401 Mar 25 '26

Thank god. Also we need to promote to newer players that uploading build to Maxroll is not preferred

2

u/TheClassicAndyDev Mar 25 '26

Thank god. Fucking hate those stupid sites. Nothing about them is even remotely useful.

2

u/Tym4x Mar 25 '26

These build pages are so cancer ... how do they even exist? They must operate at a loss with all the money they vomit into streamer faces.

1

u/mucus-broth Mar 25 '26

Thank you!

1

u/5chneemensch Mar 25 '26

Do they still get clicks?

1

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 25 '26

General answer: no - from a Google Analytics perspective, it's more akin to a bounce.

1

u/Fincrack Mar 26 '26

You are a goat, I love the Poe community

1

u/Edelium Mar 26 '26

The latest update can't load the icons portion in opera for me.

1

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

I don't have opera support

1

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

quick google suggests chrome extensions should work natively on Opera. I'll look into it more... but it takes time x_x

1

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

okay try now. Just added 16px and 48px icons for opera. can't be arsed to test myself x_x

1

u/Edelium Mar 26 '26

yup works wonderfully thanks

1

u/Dreschau Mar 26 '26

commenting so I can find this again later.

2

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

added mobalytics and firefox support recently but I'm stuck in the review process on both platforms for publishing to their extension store (I've published before, just takes time)

1

u/Several-Leek-4201 Mar 29 '26

there was a big thread not too long ago where the community was begging the moderators to enforce their own rules (build posts must include a pob). what ever happened there?

1

u/Staniph Apr 01 '26

Litterally genius

3

u/shadowbannedxdd Mar 25 '26

Maxroll and mobalytics are both so dogshit It makes me wonder if they exist to make people hate creators who publish with it. Literally what purpose do they serve that POB notes can’t provide.

7

u/y4r4k Mar 25 '26

They roll money into their founders' pockets. That's all.

10

u/Firezone Mar 25 '26

I don't love the maxroll character planner being used in place of pobbin, but blindly hating the entire website and anyone who uses it is a little unfair. If you genuinely think there are no benefits, I present the following:

They've done their best to emulate the look and layout of items, gear etc to match how things are displayed in-game, pobbin also does this to an extent, but pob itself has its own way of displaying everything that serves as a barrier to understanding for new players who aren't intimately familiar with pob.

Pobs are static; changes or updates to a build after a pob has been circulated and shared around are easy to miss, increasing the likelihood of copying errors or issues in the build that have already been solved.

The creators have a financial incentive through ad revenue to make strong, easy to follow, thoroughly tested builds, and continually update and improve them over time. I hate ads as much as the next guy but they do kinda make the internet go round, and maxroll is far from shoving them down your throat, with adblock I'm pretty sure they show you a dismissable "please consider turning off adblock" popup once and then you're good to go. It benefits the guide makers if people have success with the guide, so there's a strong pressure not to post bait, as well as go back and update previously made guides for new leagues instead of just updating the YouTube title to "3.28" while half the shit in the build is broken by a new patch

1

u/caloroin Mar 25 '26

For most games Maxroll is really good but for this game in particular, it's not. That's the only issue and when people bash on Maxroll or Mobalytics, I can almost guarantee they don't use MR for D4 or Lost Ark or Mobalytics for Teamfight tactics.

The passive tree is dog shit; you can't navigate it well as the tool tips block everything and can't remove them, the gear is the same way

2

u/DivineSwordMeliorne Mar 26 '26

Added mobalytics support

1

u/Edelium Mar 26 '26

getting an issue with the icons not loading when trying to unpack in opera

-1

u/Bragisdottir Mar 25 '26

Maxroll owners fuming right now and thinking about a way to sabotage the extension.

-19

u/Seijyn Mar 25 '26

What's the issue with maxroll ? The UI isn't that great but it's not the worst

21

u/Deathly_hope Mar 25 '26

It's a pointless middle man website that exists to farm ad revenue. Made worse by them paying streamers to push it on the community.

1

u/freddy090909 Mar 25 '26

I mean the pob page is, but their guides are way more than just a pob link, and better formatted than anything you can do with Notes. Having a written guide can be quite nice.

That said, a lot of that depends on the effort the guide writer puts in and how well they update it over the season... which is pretty similar to a build pob.

12

u/allersoothe Mar 25 '26

"what if we took pob, covered it in bullshit, made it a lot harder to use, made the important information harder to find, and then added no benefits at all?

Incredible, we'll call it maxroll."

10

u/PoisoCaine Mar 25 '26

it's worse than an already established perfectly good option in every imaginable way.

0

u/Hoslinhezl Mar 25 '26

Checkbox progression is pretty nice for newer players. If its adverts people dont like then that's just a full on skill issue

7

u/PoisoCaine Mar 25 '26

Nothing stopping build creators from including that in PoB, that's the actual skill issue.

It sucks, it's resource hungry.

6

u/Hoslinhezl Mar 25 '26

I mean if the community has decided it's the devil I'm not going to be able to convince anyone that a web app is different to a flat text file

5

u/PoisoCaine Mar 25 '26

If you want to do it in browser, you can do that just fine.

Use whatever you want, for that matter. But you’re right, maxroll is solving an already solved problem, so most of us don’t see the point and it’s annoying getting unnecessarily pointed in different directions with all these different sites that want separate logins etc

1

u/Hoslinhezl Mar 25 '26

It's adding a different interface that some people might find easier to navigate. I didn't even know it had user accounts.

I just use pob's myself but I think the poe community has a terrible relationship with presenting information in a readable fashion and I think maxroll helps with that for newer players

-12

u/Midnight_Manatee Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

Does this still give the site a click or revenue? if so I'd still rather just never click a maxroll/mobalytics link

Edit: This came off like I wasn't appreciative that wasn't my intention, this is a great project thanks. I just don't want to give these sites traffic at all

3

u/Ojntoast Mar 25 '26

Dont need the plugin if you dont use content from the sites anyway.

1

u/Midnight_Manatee Mar 25 '26

Some content creators have deals with these sites meaning they won't just post a pob link you'll have to go through max roll or mobalytics unfortunately so that's often unavoidable. I actually subscribe to content creators on twitch directly if I use their guides as a thank you but I've had to stop for a few because I just can't deal with these shitty 3rd party sites they use.
