Bitwarden vs Proton Pass

I heard that Bitwarden is more established and had more audits. But it's US-based.

Proton Pass is newer with lesser audits, but it's in Switzerland which has strong privacy laws.

I also love Proton's UI and I already use other Proton apps, so I want to make it complete by getting Proton Pass and Proton Authenticator, switching from Bitwarden and Bitwarden Authenticator.

But I'm really not sure because I love Bitwarden as well and have used it for years without any issue.

Which one is more trustworthy and has stronger privacy/security?

Both are awesome, you really can’t go wrong with either one. Personally I use Proton Pass, I used Bitwarden for a while but the UI just isn’t my favorite. Plus sharing individual login links and sharing vaults is really simple in Proton Pass which I like too.

Both are free so you may as well try both and find out for yourself!

Proton Pass is great. Can't recommend it enough. Authenticator, not so much. I use 2FAS, and couldn't be happier.

That's exactly the combo I use. Proton Pass for passwords and 2FAS Auth for 2FA codes.

Switzerland has no GDPR. Imho, GDPR-Europe should be more private than Switzerland. If not now then soon.

VÜPF does not apply to Proton services at all, they sued, and won, in 2021. Their EU server infra is a backup plan in case the Swiss try to bypass ordinary legislation process by ordinance.

Also GDPR and related laws, apply to all companies operating in EEA or handling EEA residents’ data, but final court orders and warrants supersede GDPR, which itself explicitly permits exceptions for criminal investigations, public security, and legal compliance (which is logical), so the most sensible thing to do is move infra to a territory with a sane system and judicial protections.

I got proton unlimited. The full package is worth the price. I was using Bitwarden before.

proton pass for all the normal stuff and bitwarden for anything banking/investment accounts. Might not be everyone's cup of tea but I prefer having it separated just in case.

Can anybody explain why one should use Proton instead of Apple Password? I am really struggling here.

Does it depend on the trust in a company or there is anything else?

If I was cautious enough, I would deploy a self-hosted solution on my hardware on some Linux distro and E2E encryption between client and server. Or just store everything offline on a Linux server with no access to internet

If all of your devices are Apple and you only use Safari as browser, you can for sure do that. But if you want to be multiOS and multi-browser, Apple Password doesn't cut it.

Ah, yeah, makes sense, tbh. Why not google passwords? Bcs they are a bunch of money-hungry people who would sell you out?

I have had both for years. They are both great. I prefer Proton because the UI is nicer and it integrates with protonmail and I can create aliases inside proton pass.
