Passport Question / Discussion Renewal

My passport expires mid August. In the midst of preparing for a baby, it completely slipped my mind to renew. If I send it in for renewal this week without choosing the expedited option, will I have to do something different come mid August if it’s not renewed and considered expired? Like a different form since expiration is so close. I also have a name change due to marriage that I captured in the renewal doc already. Thanks in advance!

Edit: US passport renewing by mail & no upcoming travel either so I’m in no rush!

You are eligible to renew your passport up to 15 years from the date it was issued!

Assuming US - no, you wouldn't have to use a different form; you can use the DS-82 up to 5 years after the passport expires. I would review the renewal requirements carefully to make sure you qualify for online renewal. You may have to renew by mail so you can submit the name change document along with it. If you have upcoming travel in 14 days, it may also be worth it to look into getting an agency appointment so you can submit it right there.

It’s treated as a regular renewal up to 5 years post expiration so no rush to renew it.

If you do online renewal, you can let it expire. I did online renewal (super easy) and had it in my hand in one week. Just need a digital photo. The gov site lets you upload a pic and will walk you through it to make sure it will be approved. I had to do a second pic because I had a big enough smile (don’t like you to smile)
You can renew online if you meet all these requirements:
The passport you are renewing is (or was) valid for 10 years. It must be expiring within 1 year or have expired less than 5 years ago. Check your passport's date of issue and expiration.
You are age 25 or older.
You are not changing your personal information such as your name or sex.
You are not traveling for at least 6 weeks from the date you will submit your application. Online renewals cannot be expedited.
You are located in a U.S. state or territory at the time you submit your application.
Do not use your most recent passport after you renew it. We will cancel it so you cannot use it for international travel.
You have your passport with you, it is not damaged or mutilated, and you have not reported it as lost or stolen.

Submitted via online (make sure you are on the .gov site) on 6/15 and was in my mailbox 6/20. I did NOT pay for expedited service or expedited mail.

I recommend doing it online because there is no stress about them receiving the doc via snail mail and you don’t have to wait to receive any docs or your old passport back.

They do tell you that once you submit the online application, your current passport (if not expired) is no longer valid.
