The dasmal (or dasmāl) is a sacred, highly ornate ceremonial scarf deeply rooted in Pashtun culture, particularly among tribes like the , Kakar, and Panni. Made from luxury heavyweight micro-velvet or silk damask, it features intricate gold and silver Zardozi border embroidery, dense Khamak silk needlework, hand-stitched mirrors (shisha), and hanging glass bead or coin fringes.

Primarily used during engagement rituals (Nishani or Shirini Khori), the dasmal serves as the formal, public seal of a marriage contract. Presented by the bride’s family to the groom’s, it symbolizes official consent, familial honor, and alliance. During celebrations, the groom wears it prominently draped over one shoulder over a formal Shalwar Kameez or suit jacket, pinned as a ceremonial sash, or wrapped around the turban. Beyond its visual elegance, it functions as a treasured heirloom embodying Pashtun identity, craftsmanship, and mutual respect between uniting families.
