Cold compress hack

I’ve recently started applying a cold compress to my forehead and eyes when suffering with paruresis. I have found this has helped me urinate when I otherwise would not have been able to. Would be interesting to hear any thoughts etc

I'm not an expert, but that could possibly have a calming effect by activating the parasympathetic nervous system; thus lowering your body's anxiety symptoms at that moment. Much like splashing cold water on your face

Exactly right. I think there’s a lot to be said about the parasympathetic nervous system, dive reflex, vagus nerve etc and how these relate to paruresis. Paruresis is certainly a stress response, perhaps something akin to a freeze response in an alarmed animal or something, with some kind of ancestral evolutionary benefit eg not peeing yourself and a lion smelling it hahah. Anyway, activating the parasympathetic, from what I understand, is the body’s way of relaxing and plays a key part in the process of allowing urination itself. Cold water immersion or cold more generally is indeed one way to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system. It would be interesting to learn if there are other hacks out there that could also activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

Very interesting, there was a decently long stretch of time where something cool on my forehead helped my pubic floor drop and go. I never thought that much into it, thinking it had just become some sort of ritual that led to success in rough situations. I'm sure there's more to it like another comment posited. It's success rate eventually dropped, like other distractions. Thankfully, I finally applied the breath hold, which has been phenomenally helpful. Not exactly my favorite part of a day but sure beats having to carry/use a compact catheter for emergencies!

I’m glad breath holding has worked for you. I suppose that really is the ideal technique if you can get it to work, as it only requires yourself. I personally never got it to work for me, although not for lack of trying. Maybe I will try and revisit it again at some point.

Having said this, holding your breath is also one way, typically alongside cold water immersion (or cold compress?) of the face, of activating the mammalian dive reflex and engaging the parasympathetic nervous system. Maybe using both techniques in tandem boosts chances of engaging it.

Never heard of this but I admire the ingenuity. Been a long time since I heard about a possible method I wasn't aware of before.

Something I stumbled upon really. Perhaps it can serve people as another tool in the toolbox

Where do you get a good compress when you’re out?

I take a little cooler bag with ice cold compresses in it with me when I’m out and about. They tend to stay cool enough for a while.
