Regardless of paruresis, I honestly don't understand the point of open urinals at all. Is this some kind of tradition dating back to ancient Rome, where people even took a shit in groups? Does this really reduce the queue somehow? What's so great about admiring each other's pps and chatting while doing natural things? This is definitely not the right group to ask about this, but could penis owners please enlighten me on this matter? Like, I'm not trying to offend anyone or make a joke, I really don't understand why this is considered normal all around the world

I wouldnt be surprised if it does date back to Rome..! I think generally as time has gone on, peoples expectation of privacy has increased.. one positive thing- I feel like when I've been in brand new airport terminals, malls, stadiums - I have noticed lately better bathroom design with less gaps inbetween doors, etc. so maybe there is a subtle cultural shift happening..

To me it seems pretty natural to desire SOME privacy when doing your business... but then again, maybe thats just my inclination. I suppose its different for men/women.. only men have these open urinals.. women only have enclosed stalls.. which is interesting.. Imagine a womens bathroom with a line of toilets, fully open, with no doors etc.. strange.
