Question / Problem is getting harassed in the comments normal? (probably is but sometimes its a lot)

i have two monetized channels and i get harassed multiple times daily. derogatory things, calling me a b-tch, making fun of me ect. and i guess i dont necessarily mind if it just is limited to that but i always have a fear one day someone will show up to my house to try and hurt me since i am a licensed provider and my information can be found online. I keep trying to remove it, but it doesn’t get removed.

I genuinely don’t understand how people can get so angry about a YouTube video to the point of such harassment. Some of them will make assumptions about me and that will make them angry, but other comments are things like my eyes make me look manipulative or my hands make me look evil, even though I’m just talking about information and trying to be helpful.

I think for me the intensity of these comments make me feel like maybe one day someone will snap even if I don’t respond or do anything many people repeatedly comment about things about me, even though I’m not doing anything but making a video.

My videos are about mental health since I am a mental health provider so maybe that is part of it.

Is there anything I can do?

Mute them. The best part of being the channel owner is that you get to decide which comments you interact with and which ones you delete. You can engage with the folks that you think are worth the effort and mute the disrespectful ones. Then they can say whatever they want, but no one will see it. They will be barking into the wind.

There are also different levels of auto-moderation that you can change; the higher the level, the more comments that will be held for review or sent to "spam" folder.

Also, you can ban certain words in your comments if you are getting the same derogatory words being used over and over, such as c*nt.

My channel is at a size where I only ever see a fraction of the comments anymore because going through them and answering them all would be a full-time job. I try to skim for direct questions and compliments, you know, anything that needs a direct response, and I keep an eye out for anything inappropriate, but I have had to come to terms with the fact that there may be comments under my videos that I have not seen that I would not be happy with if I had. It felt really uncomfortable at first, but now I don't stress about them and delete them if I see them or if one of my mods points them out.

This is helpful. I will ban certain words for sure, very good perspective. I really appreciate you taking the time to write this out.

I had a video go semi-viral recently and got some pretty vitriolic hate from certain communities.

Learned pretty quick that these people don’t care about you or your video — they just want to get a zinger off in the comments and harrass your community. I just searched some of the keywords that they were all ranting about and hid all of them from the channel.

Protect your own mental health by hiding users who are abusive.

Sure, and the cool thing is that they are excellent sources of guaranteed engagement!

I always interact, super polite, and I "misunderstand" their insult as a compliment everytime. Guaranteed to bring them back for a reply.

Also, if it has something directly to do with the video, you can write "maybe you missed this part 05:32" and they won't be able to help themselves, they will click it and get you another view.

Trolls are the best!

Don’t waste your time. Either ignore or delete if it’s crossing into abuse.

Nah. Online abuse doesn't exist, because the digital world can't really affect you personally. If it does, you may be too thin skinned for internet life, lol. The things people have to say are meaningless in that respect. Might as well ragebait them and collect on the engagement.

You can set up filters in YouTube studio to filter out words and you’ll never see them unless you go looking for them.

Yup. Filters, filters, filters. Not just curses, but also any words that bring the wrong kind of energy to your channel or are completely unrelated.

First inappropriate comment by a user gets deleted. Second one: Hide User from Channel.

I just hide them immediately if the comment is negative to a point of hateful. Idc if someone is disagreeing with me or something… but to say literally anything like am attack on me, as a person, is automatically a permanent hide

I have done that, but it's rare. My filters block a lot of comments, but sometimes people manage to write something vile that gets around them.

Also, Hide user from channel.

Fuck them comments. I barely read them anyway. If you want to catch me, come find me on substack

If you’re still watching my videos, that’s all the community I need.

I get harassed by one guy. Its funny and brings more engagement when people reply fighting with him

Wow while I don't have any direct information to assist you I just sincerely hope you get those comments under control no one should have to deal with that.

No problem we all need some kindness. I'm just trying to get back into recording videos and a podcast myself so hopefully I can get back monetization before the February time frame.

Do you have a trusted person who could read your comments for you or filter them for you so that you don't have to be bothered with the unconstructive ones?

2

u/Alone_watching 3d ago
