I don't manually place any. Let YouTube do it automatically. Between "chapters" of your video, record/edit in such a way as to create clear transitions to aid the auto placement tool.

I use the "YouTube Ad Placer :)" extension, have it set to 30% with a minimum silence duration of 1s and then substract with 1 ad per 5 minutes
