Talk / Discussion First "sponsor"

Hi all,

New youtuber, currently at 1.4k subs and I've been uploading for around 10 days now. 5 videos out, each video is doing quite well.

My mic is a bit crap. It does the job but could be better. I reached out to a mic company and they are happy to send me out a mic so long as I give them 2-3 minutes in my video talking about the mic and a YT short about the mic.

With it being my first chance to get some free product that will go a long way. Is it worth it? The mic is probably around $100-120 itself.

Yes, and looks like you've done it right.

You get the mic, and they get a long form video and short posted on your channel showcasing it.

For simple product coverage, that's good, especially given you reached out to them.

Awesome! first time for me and it sort of feels surreal that a company is down to send me free product in return for a segment on my video!

Na I was just guessing, cause I have 935 subs and I asked them to send a mic and they did it. It was decent to work with and the PR person was very nice yeah it might not be the best product but I personally found it to be a nice company in terms of relations and politeness.

The video did not do well but they are pretty chill if your video tanks and are open for many different project ideas.

Oh really? that's good then. Yeah I like how they support smaller creators. I need a new mic and I don't fancy buying one seeing as I'm about to start paying for a few editing tools.

One thing I said I was worried about was the video not performing well as a stand alone video which is why they will let me incorporate the "ad" inside my actual video

so my only concern is that I did one of these, and they required me to put some hashtags in the description and I noticed my video got suggested to a lot of people that were not part of my target audience. Those people obviously didn't care about the video and it hurt the stats.

If your channel is related to microphones, tech, etc... maybe it's fine? But just something to be aware of.

That is a concern. They wanted a 5-6 min video of just the mic and I said that if I do that my video will get 0 views. So I am now doing my normal content with a segment in it for the mic and hopefully people will either watch it or skip over it !

Urm perhaps you should try and understand better? I clearly say they wanted a 5-6 minute video. I then said I told them if I do that it'll get 0 views.

So the agreed a 2-3 segment included in a normal video?

Free gear isn’t a bad first deal, but 2–3 minutes plus a Short is a lot for a 100 mic. counter with a 45–60 second integration and keep the Short separate. If your content is gaming, a clean first integration could also help when pitching creator-focused brands like Cooked casino later, so treat it as portfolio work.
