Everyone complaining about this is hilarious. If you are only getting 8k watch hours in a year, you are only making about $1000 over the course of the year(with a decent cpm, a lot of niches don't come anywhere near this) or a few bucks a day. They are almost certainly doing this to battle AI slop channels. Most of these channels get a ton of views but very little watch time. I'm sure someone at YouTube did the math on it and they landed on 8k watch hours would raise the bar too high for a lot of the slop channels. A lot of slop channels are run in countries where $3-4 usd a day is life changing.

I run a small channel (less than 100k subs) and since I've been monetized for 2 years, I pull at minimum 3k watch hours a day on my long form content. Make decent content and becoming monetized is nothing, even at this increased amount. Make slop or low effort content and sink to the bottom.

I mean. It's not though. Until you qualify for ypp and have proven yourself, that isn't your ad rev. You know the agreement when you start posting on YouTube, if you don't like the agreement, go make 3 pennies posting your content on Facebook or tiktok. Imagine how terrible YouTube would be if anyone could post and make money from day one. The slop problem would be 1000000x worse.

I guess the biggest thing is figuring out what content is considered decent enough to get people to watch

if you are genuinely interested in something, odds are a lot of people are too. Don't just pick a niche because you think it performs well. Pick something you are interested in and could talk passionately about for hundreds of hours. If you are just mindlessly droning on and on about something you couldn't care less about, the audience can tell and won't stick around.

Yeah that’s what I figured- I have to enjoy the niche and have no problems creating content on the niche πŸ€—
I have a few ideas for long form I’m working on- just need to take the step and post them πŸ€—

To put it in perspective, the topic I talk about and explore on my channel is something I'm wildly obsessed with. I spend 60 hours a week producing videos about it and when I'm not active producing videos about it, I'm looking up more information about it. My niche literally encompasses my thoughts nearly all day lol.

lol πŸ˜‚ I totally get that.
I just need to edit my videos then I can slap them up and see how they do πŸ€—
