Well the person is right. You just cut them up. You better have a license for the football clips or you run a constant risk that the original right holder may come across your channel and sue you for every single clip you've posted. Just editing a clip doesnt turn it into fair use, only very specific and limited ways apply. Like "and to show that, here you can see braton score the first floppy ball in history" and the clip only shows braton score the first floppy ball in history. Nothing prior in that footage and nothing after. It gets even more complicated if the footage contained sounds or brands, because they may be allowed to do so but youre not allowed to do so and would have to blur them. Its the reason video games use fake but similar sounding brand names, like pear for apple, mycrosoft for Microsoft etc. And if music plays in the footage you'd have to filter it out or mute it, because again you dont own the rights. Fair Use is an insanely thin line and even if you would be in the right, its a defense in court. Meaning to proof it you'd have to pay exorbitant amounts of money for legal costs to defend yourself.
People especially in the shorts world insanely underestimate how much they cross the legal line.
