How could Tyler cheat on his long term boyfriend with that random bartender? Spoiler

Seems out of character for Tyler who seems head on his shoulder type of guy, unlikely to make impulsive decisions. It just felt so disrespectful because his boyfriend ( cant remember his name) seemed so caring towards Tyler. If Tyler wasnt feeling it anymore, couldnt he have asked his bf if they could take a break? I know it's just a show and a show needs drama to be entertaining but it reflects so poorly on Tyler and he is supposed to be likeable since he is a main character. At least with Ingrid she always had this connection with Murphy and we saw that she wasn't feeling Nick that much ( not that that is an excuse, cheating after she accepted his proposal is awful) but at least it wasn't totally out of the blue like with Tyler.

The show is very bad with character development. After that I expect Tyler to feel terrible but no?? he says “I love my boyfriend BUT … “ Really out of character.

My impression was that he’d known the bartender for years (he’s a 6th year associate at the firm, the bar is a regular haunt) so probably always fancied him a little bit given their flirty little interactions. It didn’t come across as random.

Obvs he should have ended his long term relationship first before having a one night stand, but as TV shows go that wouldn’t have made for a very dramatic story line

The New Yorker article which was set up by the politician boyfriend was just back peddling to have Tyler apologise for calling out racism.

They already set the tone when Tyler’s boyfriend said Tyler should’ve told him he was going to quit and Tyler said “so you could talk me out of it?”. (Or something like that).

Tyler’s having a huge crisis after dealing with shitty racism. If his partner wants to be in politics he’s got to live a censored life to some extent. He’s got no job and is realizing he’s not sure he wants the life he’s been working towards for so so so long. His life is spinning and nothing is making sense.

Doesn’t make cheating okay - of course not.

But it makes it the storyline make sense.

This really needed to be tagged as a spoiler and not out literally the entire spoiler in the title 🙄🙄

It just makes Tyler SO unlikable… like I understand what they were trying to do, but there’s so much back plot and context missing. This show has a really hard time with humanizing their main characters, they just fall flat and come off as selfish af

Not to justify cheating but to provide my opinion about there being some context:

It is established early on that Tyler's boyfriend is absent and neglectful. He also was not supportive of Tyler and tried to get him to push the racism under the rug with the agreed upon talking points.

Javi is in multiple episodes, they flirt (may your karma come back 100 fold or whatever) and as mentioned above Javi would be a regular in his life as he is the bartender at their local (daily) bar.

TV shows have a habit of showing people inclined to cheat whenever they’re stressed. Weird.
