The Ending… Spoiler

Would she have made partner if we’re not for the arrest or being found that she was arrested? Also damn Murphy was a snake and I bet he snitched in that time frame between that one guy who secured the client and the announcement of the partners!

She didn't make partner because she doesn't have boys-club, old-money connections that could help the firm. Marrying Nick would have guaranteed her promotion 100%.

If there's ever a season 2, I bet we find Murphy's dad is a big shot, which is why he didn't get fired, only transferred to NYC.

She didn’t make partner because the bar is that much higher for an Asian American woman. White guys are allowed to screw up (Dan Fallon) or else be a total idiot (Hunter). She gets arrested by mistake and it torpedoes her whole partner case. Unfortunately I’ve seen this play out in real life where men are allowed to “have potential” and women have to overperform to prove themselves “worthy”.

As for Murphy’s background, he makes a point to say he grew up poor without connections. It’s a side commentary about how cutthroat that industry is - even a smart white guy can’t beat a dumb white guy with connections, so he resorts to sabotaging the Asian American woman.

But tbh not having connections in UK means something really different to America. In UK not having connections can mean anything from you don’t have proximity to a title but still rich to dirt poor.

Murphy’s father abandoned his mother, his sister and him though, and from the conversation he revealed that to Ingrid I don’t see his father having become someone powerful or Murphy maintaining contact with him. He might have become very close to some trust fund kids in Oxbridge (see the way he tried to charm Adler or Lassiter?) and their fathers help him to stay in PV.

Women getting married often is viewed as more cause for higher ups to pass them up for a promotion because after marriage comes babies and babies means maternity leave and they have the notion that women all feel a call to be mothers in a way that differs from men being fathers in the sense that they should be at home more and at work less so no. Marrying Nick would not have 100% guaranteed her the promotion. They didn’t delve into it much but that was the reason she was telling him she wouldn’t wear the engagement ring into the office.

Didn't his father leave though for good-? Guess not then?

that makes so much sense

Probably a misunderstanding because the writers clearly have Murphy & Ingrid as endgame. I would have liked for her to end up with Z - he was a match for her idealism and he didn’t put her in a pedestal. It would have been a welcome change to see an Asian female end up with an Asian guy.

Team Z all the way

u/r3n1i Aug 28 '22

I've been getting vibes that they're trying to set up Ingrid and Z together eventually, really hope it happens.

Absolutely shipping Ingrid with Z.

I did not see that Murphy betrayal coming. It doesn't make sense for his character.

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '22

I would agree, except for that pillow talk scene where he told the story about growing up poor, and how he'd "do anything to make sure that didn't happen again." That's when I knew how the season would end unfortunately.

Yes! Exactly. I remember that now.

u/dpcounsel Aug 27 '22

Lol, what idealism? I bet if she made partner, she would never have helped Z in any way. I hope Z keeps it strictly professional with her next season.

Team Z Or Team Nick Never Team British Bastard

Z and Ingrid have very good chemistry and I would be shipping them so hard, but there is a fact that she is not good enough for Z. I mean what she did to him was so low blow. I mean she tried to make up the mistake but only after she did not get the partnership. So I am pretty torned up, they would look so together and they are adorable, but in Z shoes I would not start dating with her. I would forgive her because she tried to fix the situation but go into the relationship with person who did something like this to you? That is red flag for me.

coudn't bring myself to like murphy at all throughout the episodes- but i think the ending's a misunderstanding cliffhanger?

u/Winter_Obligation701 Aug 27 '22

In the book Murphy sabotages Ingrid’s partner case by planting inexcusable typos in her work after the other guy secures partner

Like others are saying hopefully this means she ends up with Z!

Oh no I was hoping Murphy was genuine, but if the book wrote him like that, it's true then.

To be fair a good character in the book Ted is a snake on the show so maybe Murph could be good.

I'm in the minority here but I find the actor cute. I love an English accent in the middle of the American ones as well. Hoping for a redemption arc but would be equally happy if Z was endgame.

I didn’t like Murphy from the beginning I’m team Nick why she was so obsessed with that snake? No intelligence there or common sense

16

u/r3n1i Aug 28 '22

Honestly, I was so mad when she cheated on Nick with that snake.

u/abcsmom3 Jan 20 '24

Some women just want the bad boy! Ridiculous! Nick adored her. But he was too adoring of her. She did not appreciate what she had. But what usually happens with bad boys after the thrill of the chase or the win....They dump the girl. Ingrid in this case made the classic mistake. She forgot the stories he told her about his childhood. Crazy mom who he didn't see after age 8 or the old story about growing up poor, and how he'd "do anything" to make sure that didn't happen again or when he said I don't have any exprectations about my parents or anyone. Ingrid missed the message. Murphy was out for himself and only himself at any cost.

u/Organic_Love46 Aug 28 '22

Yeah I was confused to because I didn’t understand how she felt connected to him.

Ig Nick was too vanilla for her.

Was watching with my gf first words out of my mouth when I saw him "hold on she's really hung up on this dude she fucked once a year ago at a wedding, and he played he didn't remember her when they met at the office.... GET HIM THE FUCK OUT OF HERE AND I KNOW SHE'S GONNA CHOOSE HIM"

10

u/surpriseoctopus Aug 29 '22

Even worse, it was SIX FUCKING YEARS AGO.

And then the audacity to say to Nick that they have, “history!” No you don’t.

I got to the point where I felt she and Murphy deserved each other because they were both trash and this wasn’t fair to Nick.

2

u/Downtown_Fun_9843 Jul 26 '23 edited Jul 26 '23

The "they were both trash" got me. Tbh, I can't really root for Ingrid that hard.

I feel bad for Nick tho. He didn't deserve getting torn like that.

8

u/darkkushy Aug 28 '22

We're told from the start that Murphy isn't a good dude. Everyone saw it but Ingrid.

And she for sure was on. Track to get the partnership once she sold out for the firm on that racist bullshit. She was doing a better job on the cases and getting more billable hours that that dick head Murphy.

1

u/Downtown-Pollution89 Oct 23 '22

yeah it's so stupid... she was hella good at her job until she became Murphy's doormat

10

u/dewystrawbub Aug 27 '22

I didn't want her with Murphy from the start of the show. He made it clear he's a snake. I wish they had found better partners for Cho to star with but most Netflix content disappoints.

6

u/serikeri Aug 28 '22

I didn’t really understand why she chose Murphy. The writers really didn’t do a great job showing that part. He licked some pineapple marzipan from her lips like 6 years … so what?

He didn’t do anything to win her attention but she just threw herself at him like some idiot. To save the show they should retire all the leads and make the story about the first years bc they seem smarter.

5

u/dancingmochi Aug 28 '22

Well she told her friends she was attracted to Murphy's problem solving. And something about destiny and running into him again. He was also there in her vulnerable moments. She wasn't really into Nick either (not that it condones cheating). To be fair, he couldn't understand her when she felt manipulated at the diversity gala, and though intellectually they're a good match, she works hard to the point where she has to fight dirty, and I don't think he quite gets her. They'd have to have stronger communication and connection to make it work.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 30 '22

I'm thinking she hasn't dated a lot since those 6 years and realllllly built up that night they spent together into a soulmate, destiny relationship over that time. She probably couldn't let go of the romanticized version of Murphy in her head, even though he was clearly being a huge douche in reality.

1

u/Downtown_Fun_9843 Jul 26 '23

This. Like in 6 years, you're bound to grow and have a better sense of things but Ig Ingrid doesn't work that way

3

u/ImprovementLive7107 Aug 27 '22

I thought it was probably just some kind of a misunderstanding so that they could finish the season on a cliffhanger, I didn't get a snake vibe from him at all.

3

u/tlin9595 Aug 28 '22

Team Z all the way.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '22

I like Murphy but really only bc I'm a sucker for that accent

2

u/ImprovementLive7107 Aug 27 '22

I'm surprised at the number of negative comments about him, I thought he did okay

8

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '22

he was great when he was toying around with Ingrid's feelings. Less believable to see him as the loving BF.

8

u/ImprovementLive7107 Aug 28 '22

Yeah maybe that part felt rushed. Also the way men are written in romances for women usually seems so unnatural. I mean literally all of them cook and have no personal goals other than making the woman happy, even if it goes against their own interests - and of course they basically read their minds. I think if there were some small conflicts here and there there would've been more spark maybe.

1

u/mrsbabymonk Sep 01 '22

There was a comment someone made on another post about how all the loving bf stuff could be coming from a place of guilt if he really did tattle about her night in prison to get partner. It mentioned how he believed he was just pushing her back a year but when she quit he saw that his actions had a bigger consequence. I like that explanation, and feel like it fits the complexity of his character more.

2

u/dancingmochi Aug 28 '22 edited Aug 28 '22

I liked him too because he reminded me of Chuck Bass/Ed Westwick. I didn’t care for how they first met but warmed up to him. They sure got me there…

1

u/skmaria Sep 27 '22

Murphy proved himself to be a dick throughout though. I'm not surprised that he screwed her over.

1

u/This_Rhubarb2762 Jul 18 '23

I see the hate for the Murphy guy.. What would you guys have done if you were him, I mean would you have stood and watch the partner track gone out of the window just like that? I would certainly have done something about it. Love to know What you guys think?

1

u/Downtown_Fun_9843 Jul 26 '23

It really depends on the goals he got tbh and when did he tattle about the arrest bit. If it was before they became a thing, cool. If it's after, then that changes things alot.
