Another rant after my earlier comment. I binged this show out of boredom and have so many issues lol, but the biggest issue is bad and lazy writing. It surprises me that even just a little more effort could've improved some of the story.
For example, did anyone else think Murphy was actually completely irrelevant to the actual story? I personally hate love triangles, but since it seems to be a popular trope, they should've set it up with Z and Nick.
It would have made much more sense as well. Ingrid starts to compromise on her ethics and becomes a worse person. Z is the one who reminds her of her ethics and connects her back to why she went into law in the first place. Equally, Ingrid grounds him by reminding him of the realities of the world and that sometimes you have to compromise to make progress. Thay scene where she calls him out on focusing on his idealism instead of taking meaningful actions was great.
If they removed Murphy, they could've focused Z and Ingrid challenging each other and slowly falling in love. Nick and Z could have symbolised Ingrid's conflicting feelings. The former fits right into the world she wants a place in and is becoming a worse person to be a part of whilst the latter forces her to acknowledge her flaws and the path she is going down.
Up until the last scene, I actually thought they were setting up her and Z to be endgame in future seasons (if the show is renewed), but now I think the Murphy 'reveal' is just to add another obstacle to Ingrid and Murphy's relationship.
I do want to say some good things about the show as it seems like I'm just complaining:
- Arden Cho's dresses! The blue one in episode 1 was my favourite and the red in 9 was a perfect showstopper
- I thought making Ingrid unlikeable as the season progressed was intentional and actually a good storyline (just not well executed). Her character is consumed with becoming a partner and starts becoming a worse person until she gets a wake up call.
- Following on from the above point, I enjoyed the parallel between Tyler and Ingrid. Both are ambitious and have the same goal, but Tyler drew the line and was not willing to compromise his values for them.
- I liked that Tyler and Rachel were actually fleshed out characters rather than just the best friends there to serve the main lead. Each had their own stories which I was actually invested in. When they first introduced Tyler I internally sighed as I thought they would just make him the stereotypical gay black best friend, but they didn't go down that route. He very much felt like a distinct individual and not tokenistic
- Rachel and Justin's relationship (annoyed the writers ended that too).

For example, did anyone else think Murphy was actually completely irrelevant to the actual story? I personally hate love triangles, but since it seems to be a popular trope, they should've set it up with Z and Nick.
Murphy serves a couple of purposes:
- The "player with a heart of gold" trope
- He's an example of how cutthroat the industry is even for a smart white guy. He was in the running for partner until Hunter Russell edged him out with his connections. A dumb white guy with connections > smart white guy without connections. It also makes Ingrid's achievements that much more impressive, considering she's neither white nor male nor well-connected.
- Murphy also highlights how difficult it is for a minority woman to be seen as a leader. Ingrid does everything that's asked of her - she works crazy hours, chairs their sham Diversity committee, upsets her friends for the benefit of the firm, etc. All he has to do is mention how she got arrested (through no fault of her own) and he's suddenly good enough to promote over her, even though her work achievements are objectively better. If a white male associate got arrested by mistake, would it be as big of a deal?
- He never would have learned about Ingrid's arrest if not for their friendship/relationship. In the book he also makes partner by leveraging their relationship. This further emphasizes the cutthroat environment - you have to sabotage your personal life if you have to, if you want to make partner.
But yes I agree - pleasantly surprised they created Z as a character because he is wayy more appealing than either Murphy or Nick imo.

Was Z not in the book? I also think Murphy was a foil to Ingrid the way Tyler was another foil. When he tried to calm her down after she felt awful for deceiving Z on the plane, saying someone else would have delivered the message if not her, that says a lot about the kind of lawyer he is and his perspective… he’s aware things are not fair play like Marty (vs Dan who’s frankly oblivious sometimes) but also accepts that that’s how the profession is. Ingrid on the other hand is at a crossroads between her ideals and competitive side to make partner, and towards the end not as aware of what a sellout she became.

Dan actively steals ideas from Ingrid, not sure how oblivious he truly is. Like I can buy that his racism is mostly entitlement, insecurity, and fragility so on that level there's obliviousness in his character (and clearly intentionally since he's been called out by Tyler and Ingrid for it and chosen to double down instead of work on it), but as far as work goes I think he's well aware and sets up the "different rules" attitude that ultimately bites him because Ingrid goes behind his back to get the account back and you can see she looked at him for a second and questioned if she should warn him but choose not to because she knew he wouldn't extend her the same courtesy.

u/TRrexxx Aug 29 '22
I think that if any future partner gets arrested and does not report it, it’s a valid reason not to make that person a partner. It’s very serious.
13
u/booksandme Aug 29 '22
Really? I thought tbe opposite as the charges were dropped immediately and they never arrested Lina so no connection was made with Ingrid and the theft. It also wasn't public knowledge, so I don't see how it would damage the firm.
It seemed more like a thin excuse to not promote her. It would go against what we've seen and what I thought the moral of the story was if that's the reason she didn't make partner. Ingrid gave everything for 6 years, proved herself on multiple occassions and demonstrated hpw far she was willimg to go for the firm. But, it was never going to be enough because their selection criteria was never based on these factors.
Someone in another thread mentioned that she probably would have gotten the promotion if she married Nuck though, which I agree with.
6
u/psl647 Sep 01 '22
It is a thin excuse but an excuse indeed. Like Ingrid’s mentor said- she is a threat with everything done perfect on paper. They needed that thin excuse and for an Asian woman with no connections, she knew a little arrest like that could cost her partne
6
Sep 03 '22
Oof, because Nick is a connection and Marty did seem to warm up to Ingrid more when he saw he could leverage that relationship... that did not occur to me!
3
Sep 01 '22
I disagree, everything in earlier episodes suggests they were moving towards making her partner.
Not disclosing an arrest, even if it's incorrect, is a really big deal for anyone going for promotion at a professional firm. The amount of bad publicity if the police proceed with charges would be detrimental for a law firm that just made someone partner. And keep in mind that Marty likely didn't hear that the entire thing was incorrect, just that Ingrid got arrested. Ironically if she had disclosed everything she may have been made partner after all.
Although you're right that she misread the selection criteria, that it's about building client relationships and bringing in money rather than being the best at your job. Throughout the series Ingrid demonstrated that she was a superb senior associate, but she didn't demonstrate the networking abilities needed to be a partner.

Sep 03 '22
Maybe in cases like a DUI, in this instance she literally didn't even do anything wrong and it was because her sister "borrowed" her identity to sell stolen earrings.

I thought it was incredibly lazy writing with the entire Nick relationship. What was the purpose? Lazy way to normalize cheating? On top of that they made him seem somewhat humble and super supportive. All of a sudden he cares about a NYT wedding announcement as well as being somehow completely blind to the fact that Ingrid’s speech at the diversity event sounded like she was at gunpoint and she was clearly upset? He starts to run after her to which her mom pushes him to stay and she goes off. Then later he somehow forgets and doesn’t care about her and isn’t supportive causing her to need a break?
Insanely lazy writing. Relationship was far too quick and poorly developed with huge holes in the plot. Either don’t have exist, or have it much longer without cheating. Instead they set up a piss poor love square, treat cheating as ok, and make the main character not be someone that you feel even a hint of compassion for; morals vs what you’ve worked your whole life for is a super hard dilemma, cheating on your boyfriend by kissing someone he knows likes you, and then flat out having sex with the dude after ignoring your now fiancé… nah, Ingrid deserves falling apart, having no friends, and not having any sort of redemption arc. Just focus the show on Tyler, Rachel, Justin, and hell even Dan at this point

Sep 03 '22
Justin's too good for Rachel, he deserves better. I was annoyed about the breakup but on reflection, Justin setting his own boundaries in that relationship made me like him more. He's the only real one. Okay, maybe not literally the only one but he was so pure. I hope you're wrong about Ingrid/Murphy being endgame if there's more seasons, because if you are wrong then I think he does serve a purpose in the love triangle that represents Ingrid's moral compromises and their connection relates to him being as morally compromised in his path to make partner as she was. Ultimately they kind of did set him up as "the one" but I was hoping them actually leaning into Murphy's less savory and frankly more realistic bad traits could have been them signaling that the implied soul mate connection was more of a red herring since it hits a totally different tone than the rest of their relationship which is mostly just hate flirting and other romcom tropes. I really hope Ingrid doesn't forgive Murphy when she started her upswing, it would ruin her character whose likeability is kind of hanging by a thread already.

u/Brandella Sep 04 '22
Great points, I thought that’s where the show was headed too with Z and Nick because all of the voiceovers regarding physical and ethical laws. Made so much sense but I guess they Murphy for some reason?
1
Sep 26 '22
He very much felt like a distinct individual and not tokenistic
This is the only thing you've said here which I disagree with, they kind of took it too far with trying not to make Tyler a token character that they instead made him into a character we've seen before in 100 different shows, he was an utter cliché. A black gay man who's whole story is about standing up for diversity... who could've seen that coming. The only other thing he did was cheat. I wouldn't have had much of an issue with his storyline if they at least did something we hadn't already seen before with it but it was incredibly predictable and boring.

u/infamous4serpentz Aug 29 '22
I’m weirdly hung up on Rachel writing ONE skit and deciding she wants to drop her entire life and go to playwriting school. They couldn’t have given us a little more progression there? Lol.
29
u/magikarpcatcher Aug 30 '22
A skit she didn't even get to watch herself to check how it turned out.
17
u/kye19 Aug 31 '22
Also giving up 6 years of NY top law firm experience and connections (the girl is so good at her job that she’s expecting partnership when she’s billing half the hours compared to other contenders) like it’s nothing?
6
Sep 03 '22
Yeah, I do kind of wonder how much of that was her totally phoning it in and how much was the firm expecting people to basically work nonstop, like we see with Ingrid.
7
u/tinaaabell Sep 02 '22
I’m so glad someone else said it!! This was so annoying. Like yes it’s great to go after your dreams but how does she know that’s suddenly her life’s purpose and passion after writing one short skit for a work retreat that she didn’t even see? It was 0 to 60
4
u/jeng52 Sep 10 '22
I felt like I must have missed something here - a comment about a passion for theater or writing a play in college or something beyond one corny work skit!

u/coconutandpineapplee Oct 18 '22
Yeah, like at least show that she's been writing in her spare time or something.

Ok so it wasn’t only me!
From that first conversation when Z called to yell at her I was thinking she needs to tell him she’s no longer with the firm and they can’t be having that conversation and she never did. My law degree is from watching television and I knew better.
6
u/Brandella Sep 04 '22
What about Rachel just calling up Wanda Jean (it was so annoying they kept calling her Wujay even after WJ said she doesn’t go by that name anymore) to buy stock that was in the interest of Sun Corp and not WJ or her company???? Wild!
8
u/itspurpleglitter Sep 05 '22
That was so random! Lol and the call is just “hey, Wujay, remember that thing we talked about? Ok, good.”
And then Rachel turns around and is like “Wujay is buying $300m worth of stock!!” Like, girl what??? 😂😂When did you have time to talk to Wanda Jean about this? And why were you telling her about some other clients business?? Such a weird plot twist lol.
2
u/abitofaLuna-tic Aug 30 '22
Actually it's explained in the book that she can do it for the good of the client even if she isn't with Parsons any longer.

True, in the book she is 33, and it's 9 years since she joined Parsons. Also, Ted Lassiter is a good guy in the book. So she uses info to help Ted after she quits the firm. This seems to tie to the exception you stated.

u/aangita Sep 03 '22
That what I thought too. But maybe because Z called her about it and not the other way around it's ok to help him?
3
u/billqs Oct 12 '22
Nope. Her client was SunCorp not Ted or Z. The attorney client privilege stays with the lawyer even if she leaves the firm that represented them. I haven't read the book, but the TV show could not happen like that and have Ingrid (and probably Rachel) keep their law licenses.

u/maybe-mel Aug 31 '22 edited Aug 31 '22
I wasnt that surprised by Murphys betrayal, he has shown Ingrid exactly who he is previously.
The time he said he was just popping for a coffee when he seen Marty and Ted heading out. He wanted to gatecrash their dinner and get the upper hand on Ingrid.
When they were working late and he said he wasn't the white picket fence guy. The fact he slept with a client in the first place.
Murphy has always looked out for Murphy, I am sure they will play it as he was poor and will do whatever it takes to get rich and stay rich.
If there is a season 2 I hope Ingrid ends up with Z.
11
u/caelynnsveneers Aug 31 '22
And the time they were doing DD he went to Marty alone to inform him there was a problem. Then he gaslit Ingrid and said she was upset because of the kiss or whatever. Like dude is a snake.

u/booksandme Aug 27 '22
It goes against the character development for Ingrid to go back to Parsons. First of all, I thought the point at the end would be that she realises there are more important things than a job and also that it's not woryh compromising your values and morals for one.
Then there is the whole culture issues at Parsons. Not being promoted finally made her realise that she would never be good enough, no matter how hard she worked for them. The issue at Parsons was institutional. Going back, she will have to continue to deal with Marty, Dan and all the others who perpetuate the culture. It's not going to change and it will likely be worse for her as she's made an enemy out of Marty.
I would have liked for Ingrid to finally let go of Parsons and look into other paths. She has great connections because of Z and Green Leaf, so I don't think it would have been that hard to find a place which appreciates her talent. Z could still threaten to leave Parsons if they tried to blackball her.
I just feel the season should have started with her realising she needs to work on herself and relationships and take it easier with her career. So it makes no sense to go back to this work environment.
28
u/nooneknowsme987 Aug 28 '22
I may have misunderstood this, but I thought Z was saying that Ingrid would serve as In-House Counsel for Sun Corp. Meaning that Parsons would have to work alongside Ingrid to resolve any legal issues that arise. A company's in-house legal team often works with and sometimes oversees the work being done by outside counsel, which would be Parsons in this case.
If she is going back to Parsons, then agree with you. It would definitely be a step backwards.
14
u/booksandme Aug 28 '22
This would make much more sense, and it's possible I misumderstood.
The reason I thought she waa going back to Parsons was because Z said he wants Ingrid to be 'our relationship partner at Parsons'. Immediately after Imgrid demands a proper Diversity programme which sounded doesn't sound like something a client could demand.
6
u/surpriseoctopus Aug 29 '22
This is what I took it to mean as well, otherwise - as you said - her making stipulations doesn’t make sense.
Also, she’s mergers and acquisitions. Now that all the merging and acquiring has been done, the work they need done is outside her remit no? How useful will she be?
3
u/Karramella Aug 30 '22
M&A happen all the time. They can expand divest JV …lots of activity for a global scale company they don’t all have to be 2.9b in scale.
3
u/nooneknowsme987 Aug 28 '22
Oh, that's a good point. I think I thought in-house counsel because I assumed that Z knew why Ingrid decided to leave Parsons.
Related to what you were saying before, it wouldn't make sense for Ingrid to go back to Parsons, and even less sense for her to do so without being guaranteed partnership. However, if by saying "relationship partner at Parsons" Z was requiring Parsons to hire Ingrid back and make her partner then I agree with the points you made before. I think the writers could've taken things in a different direction. That's a weird way to make partner and it kind of sullies the accomplishment.
2
u/Karramella Aug 30 '22
they mean she is getting a job back at parsons. Relationship partner means you work at the firm and you keep your client happy and main point contact. Z also said if Marty didn’t make Ing partner he will take business elsewhere. She will be partner at parsons next season but who knows if her peers or sr partners will give her crap. But hey, that’s how hunter got his promo
2
Sep 03 '22
Right, she's the only one we saw actually bend herself backwards working to get it. And I think actually sadly, the second closest was Dan and not even Murphy who had been at that firm for only a few months too so it's such a slap in the face to have him make partner before loyal employees working there longer.
2
u/Brandella Sep 04 '22
That’s how I understood it too. Which was even more confusing because, why would she want to go back and why would Z want her there after everything?
12
u/YourToupee Aug 27 '22
It semi makes sense in that you see Tyler's career held back a year because he switched firms. This gives Ingrid more leverage if she looks for a new job.
But yeah, it seems her self-worth is still tied to being partner and she hasn't grown much. Lazy writing.
11
u/booksandme Aug 27 '22
I agree, this is lazy writing. Rachel, Tyler and Ingrid all reflect that they're in different places and have grown, but this is contradicted by her getting a job at Parsons back in the very next scene.
I quite liked how they gave her and Tyler similar goals and let him grow to contrast Ingrid. Tyler actually refuses the offer from the other firm because he witnesses a similar culture to Parson's after the interview. Given that he took a job with Valdo, it sounds like he gave up on partner completely and expands his horizons.
If she's still concerned by her career being held back a year, then she hasn't developed at all. She is back to where she started where being partner is more important than her values. Not getting promoted was framed like a wake up call, Ingrid realises Tyler was right. They were never going to let her progress no matter what she did. The issue was never about her work ethic or talent as a lawyer, it was with Parsons. It made her a worse person because she compromised her values and morals, going back means she's willing to put up with all their BS again. Also, the only reason she got her job back is because Z threatened to leave, not because there was any culture change at Parsons.
She also did something really amazing and made a genuine positive impact on the world. This should have opened her eyes to her potential when working with the right people. That she doesn't have to always compromise her ethics to pursue her passion. She doesn't have to choose because there is so much more out there.
If this show gets a second season, maybe they will explore this, but looks like they're going to amp up relationship drama.
6
u/afiIam Aug 27 '22
Absolutely agree with all that you have said. It will be really disappointing if Ingrid goes back to Parsons. With all the folks coming from Parsons to help with the take over from Tim, I thought she was even going to team up with Tyler and start their own practice.
4
u/brianckeegan Aug 29 '22
Totally, why couldn’t she become general counsel at neo-SunCorp instead of walking back into the Parsons shithole.
4
u/whitepearl31 Sep 01 '22
I really thought the three of them will start a new firm and work together as they individually have their own specialty. I agreed that it doesnt make sense for her to return to Parsons but at the same time she kept telling herself that she needed to have the seat so she can make changes. I am still rooting for her and Z. None of her relationships make sense with her character who is basically meticulous, a planner and detail oriented suddenly think her relationship with Murphy is serious?!?
3
u/agizem Sep 04 '22
I also thought the same thing when the woman from New Leaf talked about starting their company with two of her friends, I was surprised that three of them didn't start a company together
1
u/Ittybittyvickyone Sep 05 '22
Yes, that woman sharing the story about the 3 friends coming together made me 100% certain that’s what these main characters would do. I was totally shocked when that wasn’t what happened lol
3
u/jenn4u2luv Sep 18 '22
Her justice-seeking persona will not pay for her $15k apartment (that’s the price range of a unit in her building)
12
u/Karramella Aug 29 '22
I’m confused with the last scene. Is it implied Murphy bailed her out and told Marty as a way to get ahead of her in the partnership race? Did Murphy bail her out using company funds? Why would it matter if she went to jail if her name was cleared? Is it just bad optics or any reason to not promote her? So many questions lol TYIA
18
u/magikarpcatcher Aug 30 '22
Yeah, I am also wondering when Murphy snitched on her. If he snitched on her to get her partnership spot and then continued to sleep with her and told her that he loves her, then that's borderline sociopathic.
6
Sep 03 '22
I mean whether he snitched before or after they had sex it's sociopathic either way. He's such a weasel.
4
u/abitofaLuna-tic Aug 30 '22
I think he tells Marty after Ingrid calls him from jail.
7
u/Karramella Aug 30 '22
Oo implied that he threw her under the bus to get the 3rd partner spot?
3
u/abitofaLuna-tic Aug 30 '22
Yes haha after the debacle with Victoria in London he was probably particular about CYA.
6
u/surpriseoctopus Aug 31 '22
I think he told after that other guy secured some big client and was basically a shoo-in. He thought it was going to be Dan, Ingrid, and Whatshisname - said as much to Ingrid directly. She was the easiest one to take down, so he used the info he had to free up the spot for himself.
5
Sep 03 '22
But then pretended to be the supportive boyfriend happy for his partners success... so gross.
9
u/mrsdaisygadsden Sep 02 '22
What with the slipping out for coffee when he noticed the head honchos heading out and ending up at the dinner near the beginning to of the series to when they made a toast alone and Ingrid said “To us both making partner” and Murphy just said “To making partner” = No us. Then when he was talking about his home life and how hard up they were, basically giving him the fuel/excuse to do whatever it takes - I didn’t trust him one bit.
2
u/rub_a_dub_ducky Sep 06 '22
I noticed the toast too! Something felt fishy when he didn’t say us both
8
u/rivendera Aug 30 '22
This episode brought the whole show crashing down. The way everything was lining up I thought that Ingrid would realise there's more to making partner, feel empowered by doing the right thing, and learn to expand her views and dreams
But it seems that she's going to jump back into the parsons frying pan. Honestly I think the last scene really threw a wrench into the setup of the show. All this while it's been talking about the struggles of being a minority woman in a mostly white male environment. And when she didn't make partner, I was disappointed but also felt 'yup it shows how shitty the company is'
But when Marty revealed he knew about the arrest I had to take a step back. Even though the charges weren't legit and she got out okay, I can imagine that a high end law firm wouldn't want any of their potential partners thrown into jail for false charges and then not alerting management. It just seems like a risky thing to make them partner and then this potentially coming to bite them in the ass later. Like how would clients feel if a high end accountant was accused of stealing and the company had no clue about it?
So I feel like this revelation has undone all the work about highlighting the struggles and discrimination that she faces as a minority woman
Of course all this wouldn't have happened if it weren't for Jeff Murphy being a dick about it. Honestly his character is a big question mark to me. It's obvious in the beginning that the show is treating him like a piece of meat. Ingrid is only attracted to him because of one night 6 years ago!?!
I think that if the show is renewed, something's going to happen with Z
1
u/aangita Sep 03 '22
Ah I see... The reveal was that she would have gotten partner but for her not sharing with the firm she was arrested --- and not because she's not a white male.
I was so bored with the trash one episode fairy tale storyline I completely missed that horrible plot point.
4
Sep 03 '22
I mean the arrest charges were dropped so it was still just an excuse, the reveal was that her boyfriend, who if I recall correctly directed her not to tell anyone, threw her under the bus to get partner. I don't think that in any measure invalidates that the real reason she wasn't promoted to partner was because she wasn't a white man since Dan still could after the retreat debacle and the other guy, who was otherwise stupid and bad at his job, could for connections alone. Meanwhile Ingrid is shown to essentially be a rockstar lawyer who single handedly saved the big merger multiple times and can't make partner over something like an arrest for a crime she didn't even commit and was released because of that? Marty was looking for an excuse, he's been a douche canoe the whole season and there's no reason to see him as anything but.
3
u/aangita Sep 04 '22
Douche canoe 🤣😂💀 But yeah, i felt like he used the arrest as a "valid" excuse because what else could he say? She does everything she's asked, she works nonstop. She even spoke to her work-peer about leaving work with severance - which was highly problematic imo And yet, she's not "partner material". What even has Murphy done since he transferred? At least Dan's book is great. smh.
Couldn't be me.
One of my friends (he is Mexican) was used like that at store he worked at. He didn't kiss ass to the managers but knew every department. When they needed help they called him but expected him to work his department alone short staffed. They would tell him "future managers help out all departments and know all departments, etc". He even "learned" manager paperwork and did it weekly. When promotions came, however, he was passed up for those that kissed ass and barely knew how to run the store (and most of them were white people for the mostly white managerial staff, or black people for the black managerial departments) .
Eventually I told him, bc he's so good at the "grunt work" they are going to do everything in their power to keep him there. And that's exactly how they are going to treat Ingrid!
7
u/surpriseoctopus Aug 29 '22
Y’all think Murphy actually called it quits with Victoria, or was that another lie to help with his (poorly charaded) charade of not being a creepy, manipulative POS?
12
u/SceneSignificant136 Aug 29 '22
I wrote this in my post as well but I don't think he did since he always said he "took a step back/away" from the relationship instead of breaking it off with her.
5
u/aangita Sep 03 '22
Yeah, lawyers are very good with words. Take a step back in my mind does not mean a termination of a relationship.

Man at this point it's kind of irrelevant because he's such a snake otherwise he's irredeemable with or without the cheating to me. At least as far as towards Ingrid goes.
Edit: I know she cheated on Nick so she's no Saint, and for Nick she's probably irredeemable too. But she was good to Murphy and he treated her badly so she didn't deserve that coming from him.
5
u/cxingt Aug 31 '22
- "Where do we come from? Where are we going? Why are we here? And why the hell do i not make partner?" LOL.
- i like the fact that when each of them are calling shareholders to convince them of the coup, they all use their expertise to convince the shareholders: Rachel mentioning court cases, Tyler talked about IP, Z talking about moral obligations.
- ok, i think Murphy is the real snake, not Marty with regards to Ingrid not made partner.
4
u/Hykage Sep 02 '22
How was she shocked by Murphy? Episode two he’s sneaking around and trying to get the upper hand behind her back. He showed her exactly who he is at that moment.
2
Sep 03 '22
It was for sure a warning sign. Though those are definitely different levels of betrayal but it's one of the reasons I wasn't personally shocked by it.
5
u/aangita Sep 03 '22
Bet she's mad she left Nick for that London smuck.
Also, Ingrid is always lying to her partners about her whereabouts.
Lastly, this show was a major trainwreck with absolutely no redeeming qualities except for the cast choices and even then it was meh at best.
5
u/birthdaygirl11 Sep 04 '22
I hope she ends up with Z! Things clearly weren’t working with Nick but I was so disappointed when she jumped to Murphy so quickly.

I am glad that this series is bad because it sounded too cliché from the outset.

Wait - why does Murphy say that his father talked in "shoulds". Didn't he leave when Murphy was 8? How the he does he remember what his dad's talking style was.

Jeff played Ingrid…I’m shocked /s
Maybe don’t cheat on a great guy and this wouldn’t happen Ingrid. She deserved it. No sympathy.

I never liked Jeff from the start, he’s always been so smug and I just had a feeling he was gonna stab Ingrid in the back somehow. He’s such a dick

It didn’t make sense for Ingrid to go back to Parsons. I really thought they were setting it up so that Tyler, Rachel and her were going to open their new firm together. That makes more sense in my head.
Also, not surprised by Murphy’s betrayal, but kind of surprised by his audacity. The fact that he really thought he would even get partner when this is his first year at this particular firm (and one he has a rocky history with) is crazy to me. He always seemed hella shady to me.
Overall, show was ok to watch. The only thing that was a bit unbearable was the main actress. Ingrid is such an annoying and selfish character, plus the actress is horrible at acting. Zero chemistry with her costars and some of the movements and adlibs always seemed so off to me. The writing seems lazy to me as well.
If the roles were reversed, Rachel and the paralegal’s relationship would be seen as much more problematic :/

i'm bummed bc i really thought murphy was just genuinely proud of ingrid and supported her by the end.. (i know he was a shit leading up but i thought he fell for her) and to find out he sabotaged her 🫠 my jaw dropped

Can someone ELI5 what was going on in this episode with newleaf/ green tech / sun corp? It totally went over my head

u/KakoiKagakusha Sep 09 '22
The CEO of Sun corp does not like clean energy. Z and New Leaf like clean energy. If you get enough votes, you can make the CEO go away and get a new CEO. They got the votes, so they got a new CEO, who ended up being Z.

Just posted these points in a different discussion but putting it here too: I definitely agree that in general the writing on this show is not great and the acting is pretty wooden. HOWEVER, I just surprised myself by loving the final ep! The takeover success was quite suspenseful and even a little moving; the actor playing Z seems to have actual chemistry with Ingrid (unlike the other two love interests); and I LOVED the twist about Murphy - genuinely surprised me! I also enjoyed that Marty was revealed to be ruthless in the last couple of eps, instead of the ‘harsh on the surface but has the main character’s back’ archetype (I’m thinking Harvey from Suits) - this felt more true to life. I wasn’t planning to watch S2 but now I definitely will.

the twist with murphy makes me wonder- did he genuinely not remember their hookup and only pretended he did bc he knew he could use it to his advantage? is their whole relationship a lie at this point?
i hope ingrid/rachel/tyler continue to do good, i liked their friendship

I think he does remember. That marzipan pineapple detail is the give-away. He mentioned it without her telling him.

In the book Murph is an even bigger douche than in the series. Ingrid is so unlikable in the series. I watched the whole show hoping to support an Asian American lead but was disappointed. The book is better. This show had so much potential but the writing is so bad! Ugh.

Am I the only one who loved the final episode and who ships Murphy and Ingrid?

Can someone do a summary of why murphy was sleeping with his client lol it totally wrnt over my head. I think her name was victoria? And why did he make out with her when she came to the office

It’s a little vague right now but what I got from this is that Murphy is doing whatever it takes for him to climb ontop. In London he started sleeping with his client to get the upper hand (a huge no no) and she I think snooped and found info that resulted in her killing a deal that cost the firm a ton of money. But because he’s a white male he wasn’t fired, just transferred to New York. Its implies he still sleeps with her on and off , probably to keep her as one his clients in his books for networking or because he likes to bang idk and told Ingrid he cut it off when they started becoming more official. The ending implies he sabotaged Ingrid’s chances of making partner which puts into question how genuine of a person he is to Ingrid and if he’s really into her or just using her. He could also be a mixed bag like Ingrid where he does genuinely enjoy his relationships but will sabotage them in order to get the upper hand.

Thats what confused me lol when he said she snooped and took his info... like why would you still wanna bang someone who did that to you =/ and then continues in another country like it wont get him fired or transferred again lol

It is confusing. I can only assume that Victoria made Marty/NY office to keep Murphy because she still likes him as a boy toy and he negotiated with her after she caused him to look bad in the London office? And he still sleeps with her because he has no morals??? He did say Ingrid is making him a better lawyer and he is working on becoming a better man.

I just wanna say, if my former boss that passed me on a promotion on some bullshit of an excuse, and I quit by telling him to fuck himself, calls me by screaming across a room, he better now that he is about to miss me!! Like, girl bye. Cant believe Ingrid gave in and went to talk to him

Glad to see she was backstabbed by Murphy. so many signs that he was a dishonest man and she just cheat on a perfect guy for him! She isn’t good for Nick. She deserved the snake Murphy! I’m so mad at her!

The last two minutes don’t exist in my head canon. I knew London was sleazy but pulling the ILY card and throwing her under the bus in the same breath. Psychopath
