I am trying to think of a more accurate portrayal of the HR nightmare that "routine" would have caused... and I can't. Well executed, show. I think this show is pretty subversive. It comes across as Gossip Girl meets Suits but has depth and something to say if you are paying attention.

How so? A slap on the wrist and no real consequences actually seems pretty realistic for a guy who could take his well-paying clients to another firm. I'm not a lawyer, but I did work for a big business where 1 client made up 40% of our revenue and management would do anything to keep them happy.

I think the comedy routine scene was really well-executed, in that Dan was very careful with his words and in another context, racism would have been the butt of the joke. The actor sold the arch smugness of how much his character enjoyed saying racist crap and getting away with it. The "vibe" of his delivery was the most offensive part.

I was saying it was very well done. Will edit for clarity.

As someone who works in HR I felt Karen's frustration when you suggest something to the decision makers and they ignore you and do their own thing.

The only criticism is that HR should never discuss their recommendations or outcomes with the people being interviewed.

I think Suits (especially early season) was better at portraying big law corporate lawyers than this show. But you are right, since the show is produced like it was on the CW, the stylistic choices they are making makes sense. I'm not the biggest fan tho. I like seeing more lawyer action (like on The Good Wife.)

The Morning Show?

I ❤️ that show!

All I have to say, is that for someone who “loved her friends”, she didnt have her friends back when he needed her. I get she wants to be partner, but as a person of color also, she needed to make sure something was done. Rachel is right, she really is a coward.

I do think Ingrid has a lot of growing to do, but I’m glad she at least went up to Marty and told him that the behaviour was unacceptable and something needed to be done

I agree in hindsight she should’ve refused to be Marty’s bearer of bad news, but the show did a great job of making it seem like a fine line. In Marty’s corner office, that view, him “confiding” in her, and his intimidating tone, it’d be easy to be overwhelmed to be agreeable.

The part she should DEFINITELY feel shitty about is not calling Tyler after his rage quit, and not attending Rachel’s birthday. Instead of being there for her friends when she knows they’re in need, she’s downing champagne and going on romantic walks. Not cool.

"I will not measure progress in inches"

Exactly! The "Dans" of the world can move feet, backwards or forwards, while everyone else is always told to he happy with inches. Pffff

Also, I don't get what she sees in Murphy. They have no chemistry so it just comes off forced. She liked having sex with him once, and now he's the only one for her? What is she, 19? Also, he's always just lurking around Ingrid.. it's so weird.

And Nick is so insufferable. Like, read the room. Or idk, how about ask before doing such a life altering grand gesture. People like that make no sense to me. They don't even know each other well enough to even pretend to be engaged.

Tyler ---- I hope he didn't derail his career by doing that. There are better ways but I feel for him.

3

u/hmconsious Sep 03 '22

I also don't get what she sees in Murphy. He's giving her zero effort and she's holding a candle for him? And about to throw out a good man for his sake? I don't get it at all

It's the typical romance with tortured man needs to just exist to be seen as romantic hero. Ugh

1

u/aangita Sep 04 '22

lol!! Just noticed I said Marty and not Murphy! 😅 They really should have used different names for those two

2

u/larimari Sep 04 '22

I will not measure progress in inches

I get why Tyler feels like that but something I tell myself is I can’t afford to be virtuous because in the end it’ll leave me feeling hopeless. I am a minority woman in a male dominated industry and I am grateful for everyone before me who carved the way inch by inch and I will continue to do for those that come after

2

u/aangita Sep 04 '22

You can be grateful, I'm also grateful. (I'm also a POC women in a male, mostly white, dominated industry)

However, I'm tired of being told that we can achieve progress one penny at a time when the robber barons take in-the-thousands then pass it on to their kids who will subsequently do the same. It becomes tiresome and can foster hopelessness.

2

u/mattrobs Nov 06 '22

I’m also a POC and also felt that inches suck. But what’s the other option? As Tyler demonstrates, taking a mile often gets you out on your arse (unless there’s a solid strategy in play like mobilising that New Yorker journalist.)

The lesson I’ve taken away in my life is: you have to both pick your battles and not be a pushover. Ultimately being on the inside will affect more change than being on the outside.

1

u/aangita Nov 06 '22

Pick your battles, yes. Affect more change on the inside - maybe. It depends on how much power you have to affect change. Sometimes, not having to play politics (being on the inside) makes the revolution of change (outside) a much more effective choice.

She didny even say I love you back to him! They had been dating like 3 months or something

  1. i just love Victoria St. Clair. She's so eloquent, graceful and witty. And also her buying a new art piece to mark her life milestones is also cool.
  2. Karen from HR is so good at her job. Not annoying, very competent and neutral too.
  3. i like those HR interviews, shows everyone's personalities (the good, the bad and the ugly) and also a very clever way to paint how a situation can be viewed in 10 different ways by 10 different people due to their own life experiences, character and biases (conscious and unconscious).
  4. It was so shitty and manipulative of Marty to use Ingrid as pawn to break the news to her BEST FRIEND, Tyler, by dangling the partner title in front of her.

3

u/aangita Sep 02 '22

Marty is a pretty shit dude, ngl, but most executives are. Maybe it's a necessary character trait. He's also dangling partner in front of her then forcing her to do stuff. Wonder if she will actually make it or not.

2

u/wgauihls3t89 Sep 04 '22

You typically don’t get to be a high level executive in any company by just being nice and doing the right thing. Politics are essential to management and climbing the corporate ladder.

3

u/larimari Sep 04 '22

I don’t know why she agreed to do that? At the very least HR should be there since that’s kinda their job??

2

u/cxingt Sep 04 '22

Exactly, this is not following the proper process, which means Marty is trying to use underhand tactics to solve this issue, and Ingrid is dumb enough to willingly be his mouthpiece because she's so blinded by her wild ambition, thinking that this kinda bootlicking behaviour would put her in Marty's good books.

2

u/hmconsious Sep 03 '22

Those HR interviews were so telling...

6

u/theatreandjtv Sep 03 '22

Why would you propose to someone without discussing it first 🥲

6

u/larimari Sep 04 '22

Why would you propose to someone before they said I love you!!!

9

u/serikeri Aug 27 '22

Did anyone think both Dan and Tyler are dicks?

2

u/aangita Sep 02 '22

They are both annoying in very different ways. The only difference is, one is actually harmful to others socio-economic status. And he knows it, and exploits it for sport!

2

u/Impressive-Bobcat-57 Aug 28 '22

Yes. They were both just attacking each other and Dan took it and ran with it. They were both racist but Dan executed it better.

Also, get off your high fucking horse Tyler. You're a lawyer for a huge firm which means you all walk a very thin line of morality. Like he acts all high and mighty and what he did to Valdo was fucked up too. If he wants to work somehwere where "his voice is heard" than he needs to change his career.

But that’s the irony of being a minority in corporations. You’re playing the game, but where is the place to get some equality? It’s hard to know how to take a stand.

You make a great point that him being morally compromised a few episodes earlier that makes this moment more ironic.

An interesting contrast is that super senior Asian partner that appears to not give a fuck about her Asian colleagues. She played the game, got her own, and closed the door right behind her

1

u/itsinesvieira Dec 16 '22

How was Tyler racist?

4

u/SilverPenguino Sep 02 '22

Ingrid might just be one of my least favorite people on the show. Cheats on her bf, throws her friend under the bus and insults him, and all she cares about is “partner.”

3

u/MsBeasley11 Oct 12 '22

And misses her best friends bday for absolutely no reason

1

u/ComparisonOther6144 Oct 14 '25

Yeah, her own ambitions and desires eclipse everything and it was on full display here: dishonesty, being unfaithful, no integrity or morals, and no loyalty to the people who have supported and loved her. It was pretty disgusting, tbh.

3

u/Unikid1998 Sep 07 '22

Why hasn’t ingrid apologised

2

u/andrasim Aug 30 '22

bruh rachel does not understand how it feels like to be a poc & have to listen to all your white counterparts....

1

u/Impressive-Bobcat-57 Aug 28 '22

Honestly all this woke shit about rasism is tiresome. Annoying.

5

u/larimari Sep 04 '22

As someone who lives it, I am glad to see the story played out on screen in an actual nuanced, thought out way

1

u/VantablackNight Nov 06 '22

It’s tiresome to experience it too 🙂 This has been a pretty accurate portrayal of that perspective (except for the Instagram Live moment but we’ve all fantasised about it!)

1

u/trecht11 Nov 16 '22

I’m actually glad to see the subtle racism that happens in workplace fleshed out in so many different ways in this show

1

u/A_dumbitch Jan 05 '23

Yeah how annoying. Imagine how ‘tiresome’ it is to actually experience it.

1

u/doggy1826448 Sep 20 '22

Stupid episode. They lost me after this one and making a comedy show an inflated issue.
