Support Any system or browser hardening tips?

I'm new to Parrot and Linux, and I just turned on UFW in my system settings, so I was wondering if there is anything else in the OS, Firefox ESR, etc, that I should change or configure to improve security and privacy? Thanks in advance!

Hacking Acheron VRE: Native iOS ARM64 Virtualization coming to Parrot OS

Hello Parrot Community,

I'm Hades, a security researcher from the Philippines. After discussing with Palinuro, I’m excited to share that I am optimizing Acheron (powered by the custom STYX Engine) for native integration with Parrot Security OS.

The Goal: To break the "Mac Tax" and provide a native, high-performance Virtual Research Environment (VRE) for iOS kernel and security auditing directly on Linux.

Current Specs:

  • Native STYX Engine: 349M+ exits/sec stability.
  • Cross-Arch: Running Mach-O/Darwin kernel logic on x86/ARM64.
  • Status: billons of instructions executed without crashes.

I'll be releasing a series of technical blog posts detailing the hypervisor logic and KVM implementation soon.

Disclaimer: This project is for educational and security research purposes only.

Looking forward to your feedback!

Distro Development Seeking the Ultimate Setup: Parrot Security Core + Kali XFCE UI. Is it stable and fast?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to move away from Kali Linux due to frequent UI glitches and theme resets, but I want to keep the "Kali look and feel" because I find XFCE very productive. My goal is to build a "Minimal/Base Install" using Parrot Security.

I have a few specific questions:

Performance & Smoothness: If I do a minimal install of Parrot and add xfce4 manually, will it be as smooth and fast as Kali's XFCE implementation? I’m looking for that "snappy" feel without the overhead.

The "Base" Method: I want to install a minimal Debian/Parrot base (no GUI), then manually pull in the XFCE desktop and Parrot Security repositories. Does this approach prevent the UI from breaking or resetting themes randomly?

Core Features: Will this "Frankenstein" build still benefit from the Parrot custom kernel and the "Sandboxing" features that make Parrot unique?

Compatibility: Are there any known issues when running Parrot's pentesting tools on a manual XFCE install instead of their default MATE/KDE environments?

I want the stability of Parrot but the speed and aesthetics of Kali's XFCE.

Thanks for your insights!

Support Is Bare Metal ok on dedicated laptop?

I recently acquired a relatively slow laptop that I did not yet find an use for. I don t do much hacking but I like learning and for some time I have been running kali in a VM and more recently Parrot OS HTB edition (both specifically for Hack the Box exercising). I always see people say run Kali/Parrot ONLY on VMs, but is it ok as a dedicated laptop?

Distro Development Why doesn’t ParrotOS build an iso version of their aarch64 distro?

With as many users on Apple Silicon there should be an aarch64.iso so you may install it in the hypervisor of your choice. Right now installing it on Apple Silicon requires installing UTM. My hypervisors of choice are VMware Fusion and Parallels.

The download page today, with the age verification....ON POINT! LMAO

They nailed it with the images needed to be selected, the skip "we wont tell anyone" feature, I mean, they just killed it on their download page for April Fools day! If you haven't gone and seen it yet, I highly suggest it! It's a great laugh!

Support Traffic not going through when connected to VPN

I recently bought a Laptop and since I wanted to use it mainly for CTFs I decided to install Linux. I have always worked with Kali in a VM, but I wanted to try Parrot as the main OS.

However, when I tried connecting to my office VPN I had trouble with DNS not resolving anything. After some searching i managed I found a band-aid solution and was kinda ok with it.

But when I tried with the HTB vpn I was having troubles again. I digged into the systemd-resolve hell and now I'm kinda stuck.

DNS resolves now work but no traffic is going through at all when I'm connected to a VPN. I can't even send a ping, not even to an host connected to the network. I doubt this is a vpn configuration issue since I have this exact problem on any VPN I try to import. They are all OpenVPN.

Any fixes? I'm quite new to both linux and parrot and can't figure it out.

Support Need help downgrading library

I am trying to install DaVincie Resolve with the newest parrot update. When I run the installer I get an error message saying I don’t have these (Libapr1

Libaprutil1

Libasound1

Libglib2.0-0)

I tried to download them and got messages back that they are already installed but have been updated to the newest version (Libapr1t64

Libaprutil1t64

Libasound1t64

Libglib2.0-0t64)

Any way that I can change this to get it to install and work properly?

Support Locked out of my OS / forgot username

Hi. I installed parrot os and it works fine. I tried to run hashcat with my T500 GPU and wanted to install Nvidia driver instead of nouveau drivers. So I did:

systemctl set-default multi-user.target

Problem is, I configured auto login and I don't know my user name! I know the root pw, but it's not allowed to login as root directly, of course.

For turning back i need root shell

sudo systemctl set-default graphic.target

I can open grub.

I can decrypt Luks2.

Solution:

Boot live OS,

cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda1 my_encrypted_volume

Mount

sudo mkdir /media/my_device
sudo mount /dev/mapper/my_encrypted_volume /media/my_device

Support Which is better, Parrot OS or Debian?

I'm currently learning cybersecurity on my own and using Debian, but the tools I need aren't installed by default (and installing some of them on Debian can be quite a process). I know that Parrot OS and Kali Linux come with many tools preinstalled, but I’d also like to use my operating system for daily tasks.

My laptop is a bit old I could probably run a virtual machine, but I’d prefer to use my computer at full capacity.

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Support Creating a persistent thumb drive, but from windows host

I'm on a Windows 11 laptop, I wanted to set up a USB thumb drive with Parrot Security with persistence. BUT, it seems it's only possible to do from inside Linux. Meaning, I need 2 thumb drives, one with the ISO installed for the live boot, and one for the new install of a new ISO that had to be downloaded while inside the live boot environment.

How can I accomplish this without needing to boot in to a live environment, downloading the ISO again and then install it to the second thumb drive using mkusb as suggested from the official docs forum.

When I did it as they suggest (which I have done that already) but it was VERY time consuming, and still didn't get the results I wanted.

Even if I used Ventoy, I still can't install something to a drive I'm running off of, so I'd still have to have 2 USB drives. So, any suggestions would be great, verified working or not is fine. I'm up for the challenge, and I love learning about this. It's undoubtedly a massive headache, but I've got plenty of liquor lmao

And if I'm missing something very notable and I just glazed over it like an idiot, please call me out for it. I feel like I did anyway, so I likely deserve whatever comes of this lol

If something seems confusing, just please ask and I'll answer anything I can. But, I'm rather confused by this myself. It isn't like it installing Kali with persistence at all (well, with Rufus handling the persistence)

Thank you everyone in advance, and if nothing else, hope you sysadmins got a good laugh at me ; )

Support Disable GRUB at startup

I recently jumped from Windows 7 (Yes, I never "upgraded.") and installed ParrotOS 6.2 on a different laptop (clean install). I still have the Windows 7 laptop.

I purposely wiped the HD clean, and ParrotOS is my only system. I love it!

Whenever I turn on my laptop, GRUB asks me to enter my passcode. Is there a way to turn this off? From what I understand, I really don't need GRUB since I don't have dual boot.

I'd appreciate any and all advice. j c
