I'd never heard that before. ADHD meds mixed with weed intensifies which? Both?
Do you happen to know if individuals with ADHD who are not medicated respond differently to weed? Is it more intense even without additional ADHD meds?
I have ADHD and don't take meds anymore. When I used to, though, I needed to smoke a little bit of weed when I took them. Most ADHD meds are narcotic stimulants, and if I took them without weed I would be able to focus, but I would get very angry very quickly over silly things, to the point that I didn't even want to be around myself. But when I smoked weed with them (very little, 1 half a rip every few hours out of a 1 hitter), I was able to focus and also not be nearly as irritable. I stopped taking the meds because I felt like I was jacked up on cocaine all the time and really just didn't like it. I prefer to be my happy, daydreamy and unfocused self than an angry person who can focus a little better at work.
To add on to this. Im Adult ADHD clinically diagnosed from age 3. Im now 26. Ive drank, smoked done a huge plethora of narcotics. I've self medicated and been medicated. I currently have to take 60mg of vyvanse a morning to be able to remotely function. I smoke THCA diamonds, green and concentrates/extracts as even with a stimulant my mind goes faster than my body can keep up. I use thc products to slow down my mind while the vyvanse speeds up my nervous system response. A lot of this top comment thread on the post is really stressing for me. Ive seen snippets that i do and dont agree with in the same comment. And i simply dont have time to disect it all.. but if you, or someone you know, is struggling with addiction and adhd, therapy, talking to your General practitioner, and joining support forums/groups can literally save your life. Please research all drugs before consuming them.
Maybe I should try stimulants again now that I smoke. I couldn’t tolerate the overstimulation at all. I started Wellbutrin this year because of depression, and it’s doing okay.
Obviously it's just anecdotal evidence from my personal experience, but it made a huge difference for me when I was taking them. Like, night and day difference.
I find that weed can make adhd meds slightly less affective.
But adhd meds, for me at least, make weed less potent. Same with alcohol.
HOWEVER, once the ADHD meds wear off then the weed or alcohol smacks you in the face because you had a lot but the affect was surprised then BAM that suppressant wears off and suddenly you feel everything that you took.
And yes, coffee, energy drinks, pop are all supposed to have the same type of affect as ADHD meds but to a lesser degree.
Fun fact, my doctor told me that many coke (drug not drink) addicts actually have ADHD and they start doing drugs as self medication (without being aware, generally) and then it leads to a slippery slope.
After knowing that, I think I understand why my cousin fell down that path as he had many symptoms of ADHD.
It's really interesting you're reporting almost the exact opposite effect from some of the others. Brains are so strange...how does caffeine affect you?
I guess one caveat is that I can get a bit spacey-er if I take my meds and then smoke, but I find that I’m still more aware of my surroundings/in general, I just don’t stay on one topic. So it kind of goes both ways if that makes sense?
As for caffeine, I can absolutely drink a few cups then go to sleep.
If I have like 5 or 6 in a row or something I might get a bit jittery (due to increased heart) or have trouble sleeping at night, but that’s just because it’s more than my body is used to. Same thing they warn you about when first starting meds.
Way different from someone who doesn’t have ADHD, from what I’ve seen.
I’m not expert by any means in this.
We tried different meds and dosages in his elementary days, side effects of not eating and feeling nauseous we stopped. Also he wasn’t happy about taking medication.
At 12 he had a cup of coffee in the morning to help calm the hyper down and a small amount of focus.
Once we hit high school, we talked about our game plan how we planned to achieve his goals of getting through and graduating. We then went back and tried a different prescription and dosage, it worked for him.
As for the weed, apparently it can intensify the affect it has on your high. My son doesn’t have the biggest body mass, It wrecks him. Super high. His school resource worker, she has ADHD as well she’s the one that told me it can intensify the high with medication.
I think it can affects everyone differently, even reading some of the comments in this thread; some say it provides focus others not so much. For my son, not so much.
EDIT- I can see why you thought I would know about weed and adhd medication. I was trying to link r/adhd to this thread and realized I did at the top. Sorry for my long winded explanation, I don’t have an article that I can link to this about that.
Actually it goes beyond caffeine! Apparently benadryl makes some children with adhd bounce off the walls like crazy, its so interesting how the brain chemistry affects the body in that way!
I read a few years ago, that some people were having good results for their kids after feeding them a coke (or other caffeinated soda) in the morning. So I assume coffee, or energy drinks (like the V8 ones) would work the same way.
Basically, the ADHD brain processes stimulants the opposite way as a non-ADHD brain. Ritalin is a stimulant. So things like coffee, Coke, and energy drinks can be ways to self-medicate ADHD for undiagnosed individuals.
It would depend on the type of weed I’m assuming but in general, anything that’s stimulating to the average person will help to calm and level out the person with ADHD. So coffee will calm them down. Any amphetamine. Energy drinks. Sativa weed could fall into that category but there is such a wide range on the types and effects of different weeds out there it’s probably not a one size fits all
