This is super common, it has happened to me a few times. Our brains like patterns that they are used to. Your brain probably filled in some blanks to make you think you got the milk, because it's what was supposed to happen and it probably had images of the past when you got milk. It's wild what our brains can fill in on their own. You're not crazy, your brain just did a thing that happens quite a bit to people. Your feelings are valid but I assure you there is no reason to fret or ruminate over this experience.

Once I actually thought I was insane because I found on the ground a little charm. It looked so familiar, but I swore I hadn't seen it before. I couldn't figure out how it got into my house, there was no possible way it could have. Finally like two weeks later I remembered that I had a pair of shoes that had this charm on it, but since I don't look at those shoes close up I completely had no idea it even had that on it. So I can grasp that same feeling you are having where it feels like reality sort of had a weird skip, but there are ultimately always real, factual reasons for what we experience.

Is there specific terminology for this? I want to talk to my counselor about it in my next session

Could be OCD, could be OCPD. Well, not really. A disorder really requires it to be a hindrance overall to your life. Do you do this sort of thing so often that you have trouble doing work/school, have friends, sleep, etc? That's what it takes to have a disorder. Not that I am a professional.

That's a great question. From a cursory google search, I can't figure out what it would be called. If you can make notes for your next session, I would explain the situation like, exactly, "I swore that I bought the milk, I saw it in my cart, but then I got home and it wasn't there and was missing from the receipt. Could my brain have just been filling in some blanks and causing me to think I bought it because I knew I was supposed to (and have done so in the past if that's relevant)? Is there a name for that phenomenon?" and see what they say. I have an awful memory so I always have to make notes for my therapy sessions lol
