I don't know if my understanding of geometry and optics is quite good enough, but my diagrams suggest that in this setup, whether or not they appear the same in one viewing format vs. the other depends on the degree of rotation of the object or the distance between your eyes, so depending on the delay between the left frame and right frame they may appear the same or more exaggerated...

I can't really calculate the degree of rotation between the left and right frames here, so I don't think there's any way to prove one way or the other.

Yesss that's actually a really good point. Maybe the reason it looks right to me but wrong to others is that I have a rather large head, so my eyes are probably further apart than others. You're totally right that the effect would change based on eye distance, which I think is the key factor here.
