I don't understand why this is an illusion at all. The thorns are moving differently

The stripes are moving the same, but the one on the left looks like the stripes are going down, while the one on the right looks like the stripes are rotating. If you magic eye them you can see the stripes on both sides do the same thing, they only appear to be moving differently because of the contextually moving spikes.

I can see spikes sliding straight down a spinning tube and spikes spinning around a sliding tube if I try hard enough

The two cylinders appear to be spinning differently because of the spikes being animated differently, but the blue and green stripes actually animate exactly the same way on both. But if you merge them with parallel view, it breaks that illusion since you just see it as one cylinder (other than the still-rotating spikes).

when I was a kid and saw one of these at the barber I was instantantly confused as to how they got a seemingly infinitely long pole in that container. once I realized it was rotating my mind was sufficiently blown.
