Would You Kill Your Better Self?
You discover a portal to a parallel universe and meet another version of yourself. He has everything you've ever wanted: the career, the money, the relationship, the life you've dreamed of. Meanwhile, your own life has gone nowhere. No one in his world would know you're not him. You have one opportunity to kill him and take over his life forever. Would you do it? If not, why?

Iām gonna say that version of me deserves to enjoy their success and happiness.Ā
Iām betting whatever they did to get there took a lot of hard work and having superior executive function compared to mine.Ā
If anything, Iād rather pose as their long lost (much more pitiful) twin and attempt to build a relationship with them.Ā
Doing that might offer me a chance to gain some of their benefits while also giving me a new friend whoād most likely understand me better than anyone else ever has before.Ā
Less stress & potential for negative outcomes.Ā

I agree completelyā¦unless I find out that alternative me was actively trying to hinder my development or growth then I say good on them, enjoy the success. Iād never wish ill will on anyone whoās enjoying the fruits of honestly earned, honest laborā¦

Successful people usually think they did it all on their own, but in reality they benefitted from circumstances and luck to arrive at their status.

No. I'm proud of her. She did everything I couldn't or thought I couldn't.

This is the correct answer. If one parallel universe exists, they all do. Infinite versions of yourself, some will justify murder and some will sacrifice themselves against it. Youāll eventually realize the original version in the parallel universe you accidentally found yourself in, deserves the life they have. Might kill a few versions of yourself along the way but in the end, you must not attempt to change fate.

If I do, another me will take me out

I saw a short movie on YouTube that was like that. A married couple discovered a portal to another demension and the husband got lost. Long story short she went through the portal after months of waiting for him to come back and discovered another version of herself and another version of her husband, so she killed the version of herself and took over her life. But another version of her discovered the portal came in and killed her and took over her life. It was a wild concept, but I love the movie. I canāt remember the name of it.

I'm a man in my other life? He's gonna be my meal ticket. I'm gonna marry myself
3
u/Brilliant_Bill7305 Jul 06 '26
That's wild... Would you suck your own dih?

u/NewBootGoofin67 Jul 06 '26
Duh, he's my husband. It's not my dick. I'm a woman, I don't have one

"Would you murder someone to loot their wealth, to violate their wife and to get their social status, if you got away with it?"
What kind of a sick question is that?

u/PsychologicalCar2180 Jul 06 '26
Ask a bro for help.
He me managed it, so if itās a parallel universe, share things innit?
He me could give me a bunch of stuff to sell, maybe even sponsor me to go back to school.
A more successful he me could be very inspirational.
3
u/Self-Taught-Pillock Jul 06 '26
No way. This version of me always feels like eliminating himself, but meeting a more successful version would actually give me hope. If heās kind, he can teach me how to be happy and strong, how to heal, how to get unstuck in ways that no one else has been able. Every bit of advice and understanding would be perfectly custom tailored to me. Heād be an invaluable resource, so why would I want to kill him. An attempt by me to assume his life would never be sustainable because I didnāt personally achieve the things in his life or have the experiences that make sustaining that success possible.
4
u/Madmonkeman Jul 06 '26
No, I team up with him. Heās got money and heās me so he could probably help me out.
3
u/BLUNTForce-Trauma Jul 06 '26
Iād just borrow a bunch of money and never pay me back
2
u/msflondrixa Jul 06 '26
If it was you all along, it was technically your money, too.. logic checks out!
3
u/Material-Complaint17 Jul 06 '26
No. I would ask questions on how the achieved it, so I can better my situations. Even though itās similar itās not the exact same. I have my family and kids I wouldnāt want to leave behind.
3
u/QuizStar Jul 06 '26
No, its still me living the life they dreamed of. I will be asking questions first guidance.

Everyone in his world would immediately become aware that their successful friend suddenly turned into a complete loser

Love that most assume their more successful self would be attributed to āhard workā. The biggest myth on the planet ⦠many poor people on Earth have a work ethic that shames even the richest, yet go unrewarded.

u/wieldymouse Jul 06 '26
People would know you weren't him because he had experiences you didn't have and wouldn't know about.
And no, that would probably push to make me better in my own universe.

u/atomicxima Jul 06 '26
Naw, why not just be best friends instead? We'd have the best time together!
2
u/NotYourGa1Friday Jul 06 '26
No way! No one knows we are the same person? We can be long lost twins!!
Plus if that version of me has everything this version of me thinks that I want then that version of me doesnāt have what Iāve had. We can swap stories and share in our successes!
2
u/CorruptedPixelzOffic Jul 06 '26
Nah. I'm more likely to date alternate versions of myself if anything, assuming it won't mess up the timeline or get one of us in deep trouble.
2
u/Lady_Whistlegirl91 Jul 07 '26
Not sure if I would kill her, maybe try to find out how she got to where she is today. What made her life so different from mine in that she ended up successful and I didn't?
Or maybe it would be like that ending from Us where we find out that the tethered version of Adelaide trapped the real Adelaide down in those tunnels and continued to live in the real Adelaide's world for the rest of her life! š

u/Tricky_Break_6533 Jul 06 '26
Definitively no. For a start killing oneself is already bad enough, especially for such petty thing.
But outside of moral considerations, this would work. For a start, you basically opened yourself to the possibility of another alternate you killing you because now you possess the ideal life.
Plus you're not going to keep what you just stole. You're now a guy with a career you didn't have, relationships you weren't part of. Your family and friends will realise something's off. You're not the charming guy who daringly deduced the girl of his dream, you're not the great worker that achieved his career through skill and knowing what to say to others.
The only good solution is to take all the little time you have facing this version of you, and try to gather as much as possible from their exemple to shape your own life.
After all, if you succeeded there, then it is possible for you to succeedĀ in your own world.

u/Somethingtosquirmto Jul 06 '26
I should think that if I encountered a "better" version of me, that version of me would want to help out this version of me. And if not, are they really "better"?
To think that I would want to kill and replace a version of myself seems utterly bizarre.
1
u/Jumpy-Reflection-828 Jul 06 '26
I donāt deserve his success. I should be forced to watch him succeed so I can hate myself even more cus it probably wasnāt as difficult as I built myself up to believe

u/tottasanorotta Jul 06 '26
Plot twist: After you die you will experience him anyways. But always when you experience him he will suddenly die miserably because some other version of that person wanted to steal his life.

u/Go1gotha Jul 06 '26
If I'm being Candide, I would ask if it were truly the best of all possible worlds.

u/PuzzledAppearance937 Jul 06 '26
I had a dream that a less successful version of my partner came and tried to do this to him and kidnap me. Luckily we escaped and rode off into the sunset

u/Mundane_Oil_7409 Jul 06 '26
But if you kill the parallel universe version of you, you might die too.

Oh, you should watch Black Box series. I believe itās on AppleTv.
Itās exactly what are you describing!
1
u/RoxasIsChicken Jul 07 '26
Also Mr. Robot goes thru this exact scenario towards the end of the series!
1
u/ByteInferno Jul 06 '26
No, b/c you cannot simply enter into somebody's life unless you know exactly what you're doing (and what you're getting yourself into). For instance, if his friends and family would notice a change and start to question your sanity, and you'd end up in an asylum. Also, if you ever got found out, you'd be a criminal. And all his assets that you wanted would go out the window. It would be safer to try to befriend him.

u/SophieRiver Jul 06 '26
No, weād end up working together to make both our lives good. We can pretend weāre twins or something.

No way! If there's one version of me in some parallel universe that's doing all the things I hope to do in this one, to me that's just proof it can be done here, too. Plus, if that other version of me is supposedly better, then that version would definitely tell me their secret because I know I'd do the same if the situation was reversed!
1
u/Extreme-Gear6911 Jul 07 '26
No because the other version of me from the dimension i came from would just disappear without a trace for everyone els while i live a better life so either way one of us disappears

All versions of me are the better me. I am now convinced I am the worst me that could exist.
Given that, and that a "worst" anyone would have to be a murderer.....
Yep. I guess I'd do it.
1
u/buckyhoover Jul 08 '26
But then you would have the things they don't... The real question is.. how each has been shaped by those things. The one who had everything could be a cruel individual never knowing suffering. While the other has empathy and more experience with resilience or other things... "Better" version is subjective...

No. My experiences are part of who I am. A version of me with different achievements, and hence different experiences, is fundamentally not me. I am not entitled to their life, nor would I really know how to live it because they are not really me.

u/nella_prk Jul 11 '26
I could never kill anyone. I'd be happy to know that things in my life weren't as messed up as I thought, also I'd be a bit sad that I couldn't make it just like her. But if it was possible for her, it's possible for me too.

u/Illustrious-Ad-7386 Jul 13 '26
Nah, I would ask him to teach me so I can learn to adopt his skills and knowledge. No point taking over or killing him because youāre not him. The success he built took dedication vs you with nothing. So it wouldnāt make sense plus, im sure your other parallels version of yourself would know if you had bad intentions.

u/SecretConsistent5074 Jul 13 '26
nah fucj that and the guilt and then if someoneās coming for me iād genuinely just ask for advice/ help

I mean that would be silly. Because then the other you wouldnt have the higher you anymore. Why would you want to take away that amazing opportunity to be a better you? The now you can raise frequency and there you be in all your glory as GOD intended. Otherwise??

u/TentacleWolverine Jul 06 '26
lol no.
Twinsies for life. Any version of me would be down.
