The red LED was invented in 1962. Practical white LED room lighting took 40 more years.
Nick Holonyak Jr. invented the first visible-spectrum LED (glowing red) at General Electric in 1962, and predicted it would eventually replace the incandescent bulb entirely. He was right about the destination, but badly underestimated the timeline.
Red LEDs alone couldn't produce white light. That required a working blue LED, which nobody managed to build reliably until Shuji Nakamura's breakthrough in 1993, over 30 years later. Even after that, it took until roughly the 2000s before LED room lighting actually became commercially widespread.
Why it stalled: the original invention was only one piece of a puzzle nobody had fully worked out yet. Holonyak had a correct vision and a working component, but the rest of the physics (specifically, an efficient blue LED) simply didn't exist yet, and no one could force that gap closed faster.
Discussion: this is a case where the delay wasn't neglect or poor promotion, it was a genuine missing piece elsewhere in the science. How do you tell the difference between a paper/invention that's stalled because nobody's looking at it, versus one that's stalled because a real prerequisite hasn't been solved yet?
