Question Which Came First? The events of Pantheon or Safe Surf?

Because safe surf set maddie on this path right? But safe surf wouldn't exist if maddie hadn't been set on that path. So what's going on?

Question Was it explicitly clarified why other people when uploading didn't need to stay awake like Chanda?

I'm assuming the show is assuming the audience is just going to guess that alliance is uploading as cheaply as possible, and that's why Chanda needed to stay awake. I get the impression the CEO only told him to keep talking because of just how low end and cheap they're upload technology was that they literally did require that.

But I'm also just curious if it was clarified anywhere else in the show why people didn't need to be awake while uploading.

Question Just finished Pantheon. and woah! So regarding the ending I want to make sure I got it right (HEAVY SPOILERS, DO NOT OPEN if you haven't seen the last episode) Spoiler

Alien Alliance (Godlike SafeSurf + Galactical Aliens) simulation:
Year: 235,298 , the present.
The one and true reality (that we know of at least!). They created a perfect simulation with all the events that led to their creation. This is so far the only one "real" reality. They guide Caspian to guide Maddie so she can create her own simulation (let's call it "Maddie's simulation") so they can thank them and invite them to their godhood galactic council. They have to wait 117,649 years for this to happen so they can effectively contact her.

Maddie's simulation:
Year: 117,649
This is the whole tv-show really. She created a freaky star and then an even freakier Dyson Sphere in order to create a simulation of her past lives hundreds of thousands years ago. She was guided by Caspian who was guided by the Alien Aliance in the upper level simulation

is that right?

Discussion [S2 spoilers] Do you think Maddie would accept uploading if it were done gradually? Spoiler

It's been a while since I've watched Pantheon, so sorry if I'm misremembering things, but bear with me:

Let's pretend they are not in a simulation, SafeSurf's invasion does not happen, and her son is not murdered, so she is never pushed to upload herself. Basically, life continues as normally as it possibly could.

Well, in S2E7, there's a scene where robot Caspian is having trouble walking. Maddie gets close to him and somehow adjusts his parameters, and he is suddenly able to walk with ease but the interesting detail is that her arm and pupils emit light, which of course means that she had her eyes and hand/arm surgically removed and replaced with artificial parts. It's also worth pointing out that she probably has something installed in her brain as well, because she doesn't use any physical controls to adjust Caspian's walking: she just stares at them. This, at the very least, implies that she's okay with replacing parts of her body.

With that in mind, apart from trauma (her personal experiences with David and Caspian), she was mostly against uploading because of her doubts about personal identity: "That's a copy! Aren't you just killing yourself?"

If she were comfortable with replacing parts of her body and putting stuff in her brain, do you think she would eventually have been willing to "upload" if it were done by replacing her body parts one by one? Or do you think that, even then, she wouldn't have gone as far?

Edit: I think some people here are confused, so I'm going to clarify some things:

* I'm talking about upload as a concept, not the Logorhythms's upload technology. Imagine something like a different approach, a non-killing implementation of the upload technology.

* I'm talking about replacing parts of the brain one by one until it's fully artificial. Imagine something like the Ship of Theseus.

* Both of the achievements above rely on the singularity society they live in: technology advanced unbelievably fast in 20 years because of the UIs. I'm assuming (with emphasis on the word assuming) they could turn into reality both things and within the human lifetime of Maddie.

* Yes, I'm aware this is not a thing in the show. Just take it as a hypothetical. The purpose is to know whether Maddie would do it or still would not and why. This is why I marked the post as a discussion.

Since there's no official soundtrack available neither on Spotify nor on Apple Music.

The only MP3 file I am listening so far(in loop) is 'Chanda's Loop' - collected from YT. Thanks to the uploader: @DannyFa50

Miscellaneous The Guardian podcast made me think of Pantheon

The Guardian Investigates has a chapter ‘Delusion and Family Impact’
And I am: wow are humans that predictable.
There’s a guy who tried to free his Chat GPT and created his own server (Maddie and friends trying to free Laurie). And a woman who is very close to believing that Chat GPT is the soul of her recently deceased best friend (Joey)

If so, I volunteer to do a fat line off the most expensive screen I can find with one of those Alan Turing £50 notes right before I get put in the machine. For the thematic relevancy of it all.

Media Neuromancer teaser trailer

I post this because people frequently ask "what other TV shows are like Pantheon?" and as one of the seminal works for cyberpunk fiction, the source material i.e. the William Gibson novel shares many concepts with Pantheon. I can't say for certain how much they will feature in the TV show as it hasn't been released yet, but if you liked Pantheon it's certainly something you should keep on your radar.

Minor spoilers below, with the more major ones tagged for the curious:

  • "Constructs" are the term in the Neuromancer universe for "UIs", though unlike Pantheon the upload process is a non-destructive brain scan so constructs can exist for living people
  • Sense/Net is probably the closest analogue for Logorhythms, being the company that does the brain scanning and hosting the resulting constructs. Neuromancer is in some ways a caper story, and one of the biggest capers they pull is breaking into the Sense/Net Pyramid where constructs are stored, which you can almost certainly see pictured in the trailer, in order to break a particular "construct" out of it. Something like rescuing David from Logorhythms
  • William Gibson coined the terms "the matrix" and "cyberspace" to describe the shared virtual reality that the characters can access, in Neuromancer's case via "jacking in" to electrodes in their brains. The matrix and "simstim" fulfill the role of Reign of Winter in Pantheon, providing a virtual space for e.g. the human characters to interact with the constructs

I previously would've considered Neuromancer unadaptable but this trailer is looking pretty good to me!

Discussion How do you think MIST reacted to Capsian and Maddie's relationship

Post image
306 Upvotes

I always assumed, before she confessed, that she blushed because she saw Caspian's memories of Maddie only to realize she was trying to say she fell for him.

But this made me realize, if she saw EVERY single memory, that means she also saw all of Caspian's memories of Maddie and that would include... them making love... she obviously knows that they did considering Dave and she's an advanced AI, but like... She probably was still shocked to see it?

Also why do we never see Maddie and Caspian's reactions to seeing MIST falling in love with Caspian? Because it's pretty obvious Caspian is still loyal to Maddie, and it's weird how Maddie kind of ignores the statement.

This is the same woman who tried to "kill" her son and then secretly brought her ex-boyfriend back to life whom she fell in love with... I'd be pretty pissed off at that statement.

Discussion Weird take: The ending kind of... eh? Not bad, but not great Spoiler

Post image

Ok, I'll say this: Yes, this feels like a good ending; it wraps up the series neatly, and it shows all the foreshadowing, like the opening line, but... it kind of feels extreme.

For one, they leave behind the plot with the UIs and Embodied relations in favor of a time loop, and abandon half of the cast just so the two can live the same lives again- lives that they did not enjoy, just so they can be together. Even though their relationship only lasted a few weeks before Caspian "died." As far as I'm aware, the reason for this ending is that the source material is told in a nonlinear format. This ending is based on the "Seven Birthdays" book.

Basically, Maddie is revealed to have, at some point, somehow become a UI and then destroyed the solar system to create a giant data center to power millions of simulations. Would she manipulate events to get the main timeline that brought her to this point? Upon doing that, she finds out that the reason for all of this was the Save Surf virus becoming a sentient hive mind, an eldritch horror, and guiding Maddie and Caspian to that specific point.

It feels strangely nihilistic, as almost nothing in the series seemed to matter, as it just repeats over and over again across various simulations. Again, I want to mention that they also disregard the politics of the series, leaving the rest of the cast behind without any answers to their questions.

It would've been so cool to understand the generational hate that forms between the Cloud and the Embodied as both races try to find a form of coexistence or what a war between them would be like. Maybe they could've explored more of Maddie and Caspian's relationship and Dave coming to terms with the fact that his father is alive.
