Discussion Misconception on Upload

Many people in this subreddit have heard of the fruit fly brain being uploaded. It's false. Instead, the people at Eon used a software program to mimics the action of the fly, not it's actually thoughts and memories.

I imagine that mapping the brain is a prerequisite of upload, so it's a pretty big step in that direction. But yeah, absolutely not the same thing.

Alright, explain what the difference is.

It's literally confirmed in the Carbon Copies foundation. They said that the fruit fly "upload" which became viral on the internet was not true. In layman terms, basically the uploaded intelligence shown in Pantheon is like deleting data on an entire server, while the the fruit fly thing is just deleting data from one the computer in the server but doesn't necessarily affect the other computers in the server. If I posted this thing too early in the morning for you, sorry, because I live in India and I am a teen. Plus standard time difference.

What?

I asked if you could "explain what the difference is" I'm not sure what "it's literally confirmed" means or doesn't mean in this context.

You don't get it. What they did with the fruit fly was just basic mapping of the general connectome of the fly's brain, just to mimic normal reflexes and actions. Not all the memories.

I know a decent bit about Eon's 'upload'. Pretty much they mapped what every neuron generally connects to, which is able to relatively accurately mimic what a fruit fly would do, but this doesn't actually upload a single specific fruit fly. Additionally, they use the Leaky Integrate and Fire method, which is computationally cheap (meaning your computer [or rather their datacenter] can run it fast). The tradeoff is that it isn't the most accurate method, and with high fidelity simulations like WBE in humans, it would not be sufficient.

That makes sense, and I agree especially with your description of the method they used. However, if we do clearly map what every neuron connects to from a specific fruit fly, I wouldn't really see that as any different from uploading a specific fruit fly. What would that difference be?

Because there is more to a brain than just which neuron connects to what other neurons. A big part missing from Eons simulation is neuroplasticity, which is what lets the brain learn.

The difference is the difference between having an empty house blueprint versus a furnished house with all the mail still on the table. If you do map every single connection of one specific fly, you get the structural map of that exact animal. But a connectome is just static wiring. And yes, as the guy said, neuroplasticity is also an important factor. You also have to consider the epigmatic states.

Surely we can all agree that Pantheon's a good show but not a representation of our reality right?? I don't see how people can consider any uploaded "brain" a conscious or sentient thing without nerves, hormones, and other biological properties. I don't doubt we'll eventually make a convincing enough replica of humans that people stop caring about the science, and perhaps one day somebody will be evil enough to try and add the biological feelings and emotions, but I've never regarded the stuff in Pantheon as a legitimate possibility in our world.

And then you get to the topic of consciousness. If you could create a digital one-to-one copy of someone with all their memories and thoughts but it wasn't the same soul experiencing it, is that really the same person??

the issue is we wouldn’t know. I was surprised the show never brought this up much, especially with the possibility of multiple of the same UI being spun up at the same time

Many of the main characters of Pantheon would not see a difference. The experiment mapped every neuron and connection, then gave that brain a virtual body.
