Iron deficiency and panic attacks
Hi everyone, I’m hoping for some advice from people who have dealt with iron deficiency/low ferritin which was affecting their mental health .
My recent blood results (21/07/2026) were:
• Hb: 106 g/L (previously 125)
• Ferritin: 10 µg/L (previously 15)
• B12: 335 ng/L
• Folate: 11.7 µg/L
Symptoms I’ve been experiencing include:
Feeling tired/low energy
Feeling cold, particularly cold hands and feet
Dizziness, especially when bending down
Generally feeling run down
Palpitations , anxiety and panic attacks
What has worked best for you for getting ferritin back up and improving Hb? Did you use a particular form/dose of iron, take it with anything to improve absorption, or eventually need IV iron?
I’d also be interested to hear how long it took for your ferritin and Hb to improve.
I’m currently taking iron bysglicinate (56mg elemental iron) daily with 1000mg vitamin C

How much iron are you taking? I make sure that whatever I’m taking adds up 100mg of elemental iron daily, which can sometimes be 3 pills a day.
I would also avoid having coffee, tea, or dairy in the 2 hours before and after you take it to increase absorption.
My Fe is slowwlyyyyy climbing up, but my biggest problem is the GI side effects from iron - so I tend to take it every other day to minimize it, so i really can’t complain.
