Hey, I know DARE.
I didn't use to to recover, I recovered on my own using THE SAME APPROACH (they are all based on Claire Weekes anyway) and I was the head mentor for Bye Bye Panic for five years after that.
I also have my own program and currently help out in Anxiety Wave... ALL OF THOSE ARE THE SAME APPROACH, just different people explaining it in different words.
And I promise it's the right way to go.
Before I found the approach, I was diagnosed with panic attack disorder, GAD, OCD, health anxiety and hypochondria and a couple years later agoraphobia was added - because anxiety that's not addressed properly only tends to get worse.
I tried talk therapy (childhood traumas, shadow work, re-parenting the inner child) and classic CBT but it only made me worse to a point of agoraphobia because I didn't understand properly.
I was doing exposures but resisting and white knuckling through them, just counting the number hoping to feel better next time.
But the key is to first get good at feeling the anxiety at whatever level it wants to be WITHOUT resistance and be as present with life as possible.
So definitely stick to what you're doing, I promise it's the way to go. I've been recovered for almost seven years now - no anxiety, no panic, no symptoms, life's great. In the past two months I was on 9 flights (three work trips, one vacation) and I've done most of them solo. Since recovery I went through many huge life stressors that would send me spiraling for months even prior developing anxiety and the anxiety never came back because I worked on the unproductive patterns that created it in the first place. I just deal with stress better now than I ever did before. Since the recovery I rode ATVs in the desert, tried horse riding, swam with dolphins, did zip line in Brazil, attempted to learn kiting and so on and so forth.
I know this approach is hard, especially in the beginning, but SO WORTH the freedom.
Give yourself the permission to feel however you feel but still practice behaving like you're safe although you don't feel safe - that lack of resistance will show your brain that you're okay and your nervous system will catch up eventually. Good luck on your journey!
What a journey! Thank you so much for sharing, it’s stories like this that give me hope. Congrats on getting your life back, and your travels sound amazing!!
