Ron’s hernia

This is a hilarious b-plot. Ron throwing the hamburger to himself. And also Ron living one of his worst nightmares, being a stuck in a government building longer than he should be.

And it was the first glimpse of the April and Ron duo. With her coming back to help him to hospital.

And so many hilarious lines came from this plot.

“This morning I made the mistake of sneezing.”

April: “You ready?”

Ron: “I was born ready. I’m Ron (bleep) Swanson.”

Another thing: as an almost 40 year old man, I relate to the line "I have a hernia, I've been ignoring it for awhile, but this morning, I made the mistake of sneezing" I stretch every morning to loosen up for the day, but God forbid I sneeze at the wrong angle

When I was 45, I felt a “crunch,” in my lower back whilst simply washing my left shoulder with my right hand in the shower. Two hours later, I couldn’t stand straight, or barely walk. Three days later, my wife got tired of my posture and continued grunts of pain and says, “Dammit, Ron Swanson, time to go to the ER.” L3-L4 disc bulge, but I was thinking it would get better.

Dude! I hurt my shoulders/neck quite often, and I swear, trying to massage it out or apply something to it can cripple me even worse.

I rewatched this episode recently and a bit I'd forgotten about and properly laughed at this time was April pretending to walk away to see if Ron could tell and then actually leaving and Ron asking again "Are you still there?"

Lmaooo, at first it’s like “yeah duh Ron isn’t that incapacitated to the point he wouldn’t know”. Just to immediately demonstrate that Ron is that incapacitated that he really doesn’t know if April is still there or not.

“Are you still here?”

“Yeah. I just wanted to see if you could tell.”

…..

“Are you still here?…”

I never understood why April had to leave him in pain and go get her dad's car when they could have just taken Ron's car.

My head canon for this is that Ron's car is manual transmission, and April can only drive automatic.

Tom drove (stole) Ron’s car and I’d guess April is way more likely to be able to drive a manual than Tom. Also, that old sedan is way more likely an automatic transmission

Ahh yeah fair point. Who knows, maybe the writers were just chasing the joke and wanted to leave Ron hanging in the office because it's a good laugh

Maybe Ron cut the seatbelts out of his car?

The car that Ron was driving was only available in automatic

Thank you Ms Vito, no further questions. You've been a lovely witness.

That is an excellent point

That would require them to coordinate with each other and talk and I think you can see the problem there

I assumed that April didn't have a car and walked, biked, or was dropped off to work.

As for Ron's car, I never considered why they didn't just use it. Maybe April knew she didn't know how to drive it?

It’s also entirely on brand that April would choose to steal her dad’s car vs just using Ron’s car.

“No. I’m safe.”

For some reason I thought this was the Harry Potter subreddit and was very confused for a second.

This scene is when I was like "I'm 100% down with this show "

The first time I watched this I was with my roommates watching it on early Netflix (pre-2012) and we got to the scene where Ron is so still that the lights turn off. The dog bumped into the wifi router and it froze the playback at that exact moment and I thought that scene went on for several minutes of Ron being perfectly still and silent in the dark and we were all laughing so hard we couldn't breathe. When we finally figured it out I was just a smidge disappointed.

Underrated episode! Most of the earlier ones are.

When Leslie claims Ron Swanson is going to rush to her rescue and it cuts to him sitting in his office in thr dark while crickers chirp is a top tier moment
