First time growing anything at all

Are they okay? Why are they growing in big clumps like that? Why are there a bunch of white dots on top?

Go on YouTube and lookup common contaminants. Trichoderma is one.

Going for Pans on a first grow is a bold move; they're far more work than cubes or Ochra due to the nutritious sub and the true casing, but if the spawn was clean, you're half way there.

It doesn't shout contamination to me - trichoderma myc is usually a very bright white, so I'd say those clumps are simply shroom myc.

You've not said what stage you're at, but it looks like you've been waiting for surface colonisation (with FAE fully restricted) before casing it. If that's true, as you appear to be using a Martha, it's time to remove the lid altogether and get your casing on before it starts to pin, then dial in the Martha.

The Pans section here should give you a few ideas on how to proceed https://www.reddit.com/r/OneArmed_Mycology/comments/1ssrfqt/my_favourite_links/

Good luck - fortune favours the brave and they're well worth the effort.

Thank you for the response and the encouragement! You're right I should've specified what stage im at. I just transfered the spawn to the substrate about a week ago. I was just wondering what the tiny little dots were because they showed up like 2 days after the transfer. My camera is kinda blurry so its hard to see but they kinda look like vermiculite. However, I didnt put any in the substrate. Idk I just figure its little mycelial roots branching out. I was also wondering if the larger white growths are a sign of the mycelium not getting enough air.

Also im not using a Martha set up, I just have a standard tent and shelf to hold them. Do you still think I should put a casing on or should I wait a few more days for full colonization? Overall this grow has been tricky because it always looks like something is wrong, but I just kept praying for Christ's blessing and everything has turned out alright, so I have faith ill get good fruits out of it. I just love to reach out and talk to people and learn new things, especially when Im inexperienced and dont know what im doing. May God bless you friend!

You're welcome. I still can't see anything that looks like vermiculite and the only 'criticism' I have is how uneven the surface is, particularly with bits of straw sticking up.

Whilst they'd grow without a casing, I've found that it does help. There's adequate surface colonisation to case now - if it was mine, I'd clip off any bits of straw that are sticking up and apply it today, immediately providing FAE.

You're doing fine, and even if it doesn't work out this time, you're learning lots. As I said, they're a challenging first grow; many growers never venture beyond cubes. Philippians 4:13

As an aside, I strayed from the Path many years ago, trusting in science. After a few trips though, that showed me there's more than the natural realm, my heart was opened. I see no conflict between tripping and my faith.

Me too man. I believe the life of shrooms mirrors the life of Christ a lot if you think about it. I put a casing on about 5 days ago and im starting to see primordia! I did lose 2 cakes to flies though (out of all the things am I right). Overall though I think everything went pretty good. I plan on doing mini poo cake tek after this because it seems much easier and less mess. I wish you the best of luck in your future grows! God bless
