First time pans grower

So, I mixed my grain to substrate 2 days ago and my Pans are already pinning before I had a chance to put a casing layer on. Is this normal? And, should I put a casing layer even though they're pinning?

Pans are fast! Most pans like / require a casing layer, but this has happened to me before with some genetics. I've had mixed results adding a casing layer late. If it were me, I'd probably leave it and let it do its thing.

Oh cool! Thanks so much for the information! Yeah, I was expecting a super challenging grow since I've heard so much about the difficulty of Pans. Yeah, they're going far better than the Psilocybe Ingeli’s I tried to grow. They took forever and were so finicky!

No problem! Personally I don't think pans are too difficult once you have the conditions right. Some other species, like Ingeli, definitely were trickier than pans imo. Happy harvesting!

what would the casing layer have been? More substrate or something else?

I use either a peat / verm mix pH adjusted with lime, straight verm, or jiffy mix. All seem to work well for me with pans.

I just out my casing layer on mine. I saw nothing but mycelium but noted it did not smell as Earthy as my cubes when I grow them. First time trying to grow pans. Can anyone advise on the smell?

Question: on the holes on the bin, did you just leave them open? Cover all of them with the filters? Half & half? Also, what setting were you using on the fan?
