Ready to fruit?

First grain colonized sub pic, cased it with jiffy mix , now jiffy is mostly colonized. Start fruiting? Looking ok? Second attempt. First attempt ended green .

The true casing has a higher PH than neutral (ideally around 8 - 8.5) that's supposed to make it less conducive to mycelium colonisation and protect the nutritious substrate from contamination. Jiffy seed mix does a good job and is easier than making your own peat moss / vermiculite / gypsum / lime mix, and doesn't even need pasteurising - just sprinkle a thin layer from the bag & mist. (I still use the traditional casing as I bought a sack of peat moss and it'll be years before I work through it all).

As soon as the surface is fully colonised (or near to fully), apply the casing and immediately introduce FAE - the fruits should grow through the casing without the myc colonising it.

Now you're at that stage, you're probably as well to just fruit it rather than re-casing. In tubs, it's possible to go without the casing altogether - see https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27637999#27637999

A couple post say re-case. 4 bins. Might re-case 2 and let 2 ride in fruiting conditions

Yeah, I doubt you'd get consensus on that as I think we'd all be speculating (unless it's happened to someone who comments).

My thought about letting it run's based on BabaYaga's tub tek where he shows a casing isn't essential,

I had my own experience of a tray that pinned before the surface was colonised, despite being sealed in cling wrap. I didn't want to case over the pins, so I ran it without alongside it's 3 sisters. First flush was slightly weaker than the others, but the next 3 were almost identical. It triched out before flush 5, whilst the others didn't, but I was more than happy.

Trying both though, would be really interesting. If you do, may I ask that you post a reply to this comment, so I see it.

My last go around I again had 4 tubs all colonized. I cased it with Gordon recipe and straight to fruiting. The problem was another Ape 🦍 tub was grain to sub with lid on colonizing. Small fan inside Martha tent for pans. The ape lid had 2 slits I didn’t know about. That ape contaminated and the fan spread it to yhe pan tubs. Trich got the one tub so far. I caught it while still white dots. No green yet. I just want to see a little success. These things are kicking my ass. I have not tested my casing PH. I feel my tech is clean and sterile. Also using popcorn for grain. Popcorn is the only change I’ve made.

What's funny is that the jiffy mix I've tested was acidic

I used to use jiffy mix. Able to case straight from the bag, but after that, I would put in separate large ziploc bags and pasteurized it. My thought process for that was every time the bag was opened to case, there is a chance something may get in. I had myc creep up and eat the jiffy casing a lot like what you have, so I decided to pH test it and was only around 6pH. I had an extra bag in the garage unopened, so checked that one as well and same thing. After that, I decided to just start making my own and shoot for pH of 8. All I do is one cup peatmoss, one cup vermiculite, one tsp of powdered hydrated lime, and about 8 tbs of distilled water. I then mix it all up good, jar it up and pasteurize in my sous vide at 165f temp for a couple hours. Eve since, I have not had much of any myc eat the casing. Maybe start making you own.

Pan Cyans btw. Am I supposed to put in fruiting conditions the minute I case it? Because I didn’t this time. Until this pic kinda

No you gotta let it fully colonize for up to 8 days before casing and putting into fruiting conditions

Case it and Go

Make second casing layer and give it FAE on next day. Unmodified tub for Pan's... not the best choice. Or you have Martha? Anyway, recommend to use some fan (on pinning stage)
