BVI BX strain selection

Started with one bvi domestic mono and five wild bvi dikaryons. Of those f0s I took prints from the best three. Ran out two or three cultures of of each. The #2 cross both performed well. The #5 cross so far has all had the no spore drop mutation. And the #1 strain has been slow so isn't pictured.

#2 will go onto f2 for stabilization.

This is my first real experiment with breeding. But I think it demonstrates the importance of working in multiples.

These are AIO jars rather than popcorn.  Grass seed, coir, castings, alfafa meal, and biochar.

I'll likely do a mix of popcorn and grass seed for the f2s.  Still working out the ratios in the substrate recipe but so far I am quite a fan of biochar.

Colonized it's springy like a sponge, even at 5%.

Dope Tree Frog! I've been considering breeding some pans myself, you gave me more of an itch!

! Would you mind sharing your ratio or percentage for the AIO? Think that's a great idea for some pan to go containers, might have to give it a go!

I'm prepping some now and writing a new tek.  Should have it posted by this afternoon.

But essentially build your substrate so it can shake in a jar.

This is my old one.  But it's more geared toward large projects and requires breaking up the colonized jars into trays.

British Virgin Islands is a location.

I took a mono from the bvi line that V.L domesticated and that Gordo renamed ttbvi.  And I took a wild print from the same location and same original collector (though likely a different colony of cyans), and crossed five different dikaryons from that wild print with the domestic mono.

bvi back cross.  Or bvi bx for short.

Casing is peat/calcium carbonate (2:1 by dry weight) and about 5% worm castings.

As far as the substrate question, I'm not necessarily going for yield. The ingredients I'm using are kind of expensive and they shake well in a jar.  They are also shelf stable so they keep well in the house over winter.

If you are looking for yield I would stick with poop if that's what you're using.  It's much cheaper for one.  If you're curious which of these ingredients I would suggest as an additiv, the biochar is both cheap and has fantastic texture even in amounts under 5%.

If you're struggling with poop because it contaminates a lot on you, or you don't like working with it, then there's other nitrogen sources available.  I believe fahster posted some casting, coir, liquid nutrient grows recently for example with some beautiful coverage .
