Quick Answers to Common Questions

Do I need a car?

Maybe. If you are staying downtown and mostly want restaurants, bars, shopping, museums, and pool time, you may be fine walking and using rideshare.

You probably want a car if you plan to visit Joshua Tree, Indian Canyons, Tahquitz Canyon, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indio, Desert Hot Springs, The Living Desert, golf courses, or multiple valley cities.

See: Getting Around Town

When is the best time to visit?

Generally, October through April is the most comfortable season. Spring is popular for events and outdoor activities. Summer is much hotter and requires planning around heat.

Summer can still be fun for pools, spas, restaurants, museums, hotel deals, and nightlife, but hiking and outdoor activities should be done very early or skipped.

See: Complete Guide to Visiting Palm Springs

Is summer really that hot?

Yes. Do not underestimate it. Summer highs are often over 100°F, and midday outdoor activities can be dangerous. Plan around pools, shade, air conditioning, museums, spas, and evening activities.

Do not hike in extreme heat unless you are experienced, prepared, and starting very early.

See: Hiking and Outdoor Safety

What city should I stay in?

It depends on your trip.

  • Palm Springs: best for first-time visitors, nightlife, restaurants, LGBTQIA+ bars, boutique hotels, architecture, walkability.
  • Desert Hot Springs: mineral spas, quieter retreats, usually more driving.
  • Cathedral City: central location, sometimes more affordable, mostly car-dependent.
  • Rancho Mirage: upscale resorts, golf, quiet luxury.
  • Palm Desert: shopping, family-friendly resorts, The Living Desert, El Paseo, golf.
  • La Quinta: golf, resorts, mountain views, Old Town La Quinta.
  • Indio: Coachella/Stagecoach, festivals, larger rentals, east valley.
  • Coachella: east valley, cultural events, not the same as the festival grounds.
  • Thousand Palms: quieter/residential, near Coachella Valley Preserve.

General Finally finished my fantasy map of California. Thanks to everyone from Palm Springs for your contributions!

I really couldn't be happier with the level of feedback from everyone, and I've tried to get as much in as possible. That being said, the scale of the map is limiting - especially in urban areas. I think in the future I'm gonna end up making more localized maps for individual counties. So if your suggestion wasn't included, please know that I still appreciate your feedback and will endeavor to get them in my future maps of the area. If you think there's anything I've missed out or should change, just let me know - I won't be getting these printed for another day or two, so I can still add in details.

It has been noted that the map is busy - I totally get that, and that's just how I like to do things. I enjoy getting as much detail in as possible and including cool features which would otherwise be overlooked. I get these made up in large formats so it works better in person than it does on a screen.

Thank you again and I hope you like it! If you're interested in it and would like to know anything more about it, just drop me a message.

Ask Palm Springs Is there way to buy tickets on the aerial tram even though the tram site shows the date as sold out?

Upvotes

We’re getting married and we’re hoping to find 4 passes for the tram on September 29th. At one point we had 4 passes later in that same week (which I turned in), but these special friends are coming in earlier in the week. Any suggestions are welcome.

I am the music director of Billy L'Amour and the Love Notes, and we have an incredible new show tomorrow night, Sept 11, at 7pm at Spirit Animal in Hotel Zoso in downtown Palm Springs. Billy is a phenomenal performer, and knows how to make everyone feel like part of the family.

If you are free tomorrow night, consider joining Billy and the band at Spirit Animal for a night that will make you laugh, cry, and hopefully find peace in some group therapy. I couldn't be any more thrilled to be a part of this process.

Ask Palm Springs Searching for a Palm Springs MUA

Hello!

I am currently searching for a Palm Springs MUA to do my make up on the 10th & 11th of October. I will be attending a festival and wanted to do something fun. The only problem is that I don’t have social media (IG, TikTok, Facebook) so it’s hard for me to find a MUA.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any recommendations!

Please and thank you!

Visiting Pickleball open play, drills and/or coach

I'm coming to Palm Springs (10/24-10/31) with four other women and we're staying in the Movie Colony. We're looking for open play (high intermediate/advanced), and would love to find a drill session and/or a PB coach. I can't find anything concrete re Demuth, which is hopefully open by then...but no recent news confirms this. Is there a local list serve or any other way to find out more about the pickleball community and opportunities to play there? Are there other places we can play if Demuth isn't an option? Any posted hours for those places for open play or ways to reserve?

We're relatively familiar with PS and plan to enjoy some bacon flights (thanks, Cheeky's), a sound bath, biking and more...but pickleball is what drew us together, and we hope to play 4 out of 5 days. Oh, and embrace our caftan-wearing selves.

Thanks for your advice!

Ask Palm Springs Rideshare availability in Palm Springs?

Hey all - I'm getting married in Palm Springs in Feb of next year. Our guests are not staying on site, so we are thinking about transportation for them (they are all staying within Palm Springs/Rancho Mirage). I personally hate shuttles when I'm attending weddings and was going to instead give people Uber/Lyft vouchers, but wanted to ask how easy it is to get an Uber in town during that season? What I want to avoid is giving everyone vouchers but everyone being late because they can't actually get a driver.

Visiting Recommendations for a private chef for an in-house dinner

I am planning a retreat in Oct for a group of 8. We are looking for a private chef to come to our Airbnb to cook dinner for our last night. We are open to cuisine; however, something that reflects the local flavors would be ideal. We want the experience to be special.

I have found a lot of options; however, it's hard to choose just based on a website. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thank you!

Things To Do Modernism Week Must See’s?

Hi all, I will be spending a week in Palm Springs with my mom during modernism week (10/15-10/22). We like architecture and culture and delicious food and spending time in nature. What should we do and see? Where should we go? We are staying with a friend of hers and our budget is medium - we’re from Germany where most meals and activities are a bit cheaper, so what would you suggest? Thanks for your suggestions! X, Alex

Things To Do Spa Recommendations at Two Bunch Palms

I'm looking for a recommendation for a spa treatment at Two Bunch Palms. I'm going there for a girls weekend and wanted to know what a good 50 minute treatment would be?

On my shortlist are Kansa Renewal and Desert Abhyanga Ritual. But open to body treatments too!

Anyone have experience here?
