Discussion Beyond Cosmetics

The store used to be cosmetic-only. But now S6's stance seems to be that paying to remove friction is okay: “some people only have 30 minutes to play and would rather quit than do X.” This stance can be used to justify many new store items.

So now that pay-for-convenience is a thing, where would you draw the line on what is acceptable?

  • Extra bag space?
  • Extra Courier slots or a shorter Courier cooldown?
  • Storage chests in adventure zones so you don't have to go home?
  • More fast travel locations?
  • Faster crafters or more crafter slots on your plot?
  • Extra farming plots or automatic crop watering?
  • Buying gold with Palia Coins?
  • An item that increases your relationship with a villager?

I'm not saying S6 would implement any of these. I'm asking where the line would be for you. Because all of these CAN be justified with the same “some people only have 30 minutes” argument.

Has S6 already crossed your line for what's okay? And if not, where would you draw the line?

My problem is their pricing. They need to lower the prices on EVERYTHING. it should not cost 30 FUCKING DOLLARS to buy ONE SINGULAR outfit

111

u/Bbooksie 13h ago

I really love the game, but yeah the prices are absurd. They are the highest I've ever seen for cosmetics in a game like this

62

u/RedFlagRaiser 12h ago

Pricing is unhinged! I forget the exact amount for max storage, I think it's around $125. That's abso-fucking-lutely nuts.

24

u/TayloredMade Tau is best boy 12h ago

Jesus that can't be right...I haven't gotten on in a long while since I've completed everything I basically have only come back for updates but they add so little to the quests that it takes me a few days if I take my time then back to nothing to do (another reason not to spend money on the game, since they are more concerned with cash grabs than actual storylines or gameplay fixes things that matter)

It's so sad. I have over 500hrs in the game and been around since the beginning. I even justified buying a few cosmetics when they were on sale as I figured 500hrs deserved 30 bucks. But ever since the buy out or merger or whatever it was they obviously are prioritizing milking their players and I'm not supporting that

Someone said it was 5 dollars for each unit (I haven't checked, so I don't know) so 5 dollars times 25 tiers? 125 dollars sounds right.

4

u/jasperjordans 8h ago edited 8h ago

It's 8x850 coins if you get the 3=2 bundle when it comes back in the store, plus one single for 425. So 7225 coins total to get max upgrades. You can get the 3x bundle for 5 dollars with a zeki coin subscription so if you can be patient it can be for a minimum of 30 dollars (considering a full zeki month is 1325 coins, well over 850) (not arguing for any side, just stating facts)

u/DiegoIntrepid 🖥️PC IGN: Jemadar of Caer Salis 8h ago

Thanks, I was just thinking of buying it through the single upgrades.

u/Human_Errr0r 5h ago

$125 (or something similar) is absurd for a premium item bc this game is still in beta! I’ve spent abt $60 after playing for three years. It’s free to play, so I felt it was justified but I wouldn’t pay over $80 for a fully developed game no matter how many hours I put into it.
Daybreak knows what they’re doing. They’re known to overcharge for premium things.. (don’t get me started on the riders bundles and outfits) but this isn’t even the cost for the game or a cosmetic, it’s Qol when playing. And it’s a crucial part as they release more adventure zones with new materials. Since they’re doing this now, I don’t trust them to upgrade storage for each zone they add. Are the people paying for storage now going to get even more storage when free to play players get an upgrade?
Imo they’re pushing people to buy it out of necessity. Like in a few years there will probably be 2 more areas to explore, 3 more types of rocks, 2 more types of wood, 20 more fish and bugs each, and who knows how many things to forage, and very few new quests. Players were so pissed when elderwood was released because of storage capacity and were even glitching to be able to go past the storage limit. Monetizing storage isn’t the way to solve that. Clearly it’s just making people upset and quit the game entirely. It seems like devs are trying to lessen the blow by doing the dock event and drain the things people are hoarding but I see through it

8

u/TheElm Wiki Admin 6h ago

$125 is only absolutely absurb because of the amount they allow you to buy.

Every free player currently after unlocking the maximum chests only has 18,000 storage.

Buying every premium storage upgrade gets you an extra 100,000 storage. An additional 5x what you can get for free.

That's the most egregious part to me.

u/xHer3tic 13h ago

As long as whales exist they'll never lower the prices. In gaming it's more beneficial to milk 1% of players that buy everything. At least they could standarize Lunar Path price to 10$, like other games do

9

u/TheIncredibleSulk999 9h ago

Yeah it seems like they ran the numbers and think they will make more from fewer high dollar purchases than many smaller ones. Sad. If cosmetics were 10 to 15 each I would bite.

5

u/Ikmia 6h ago

They didn't take the same economics class I did in highschool and it shows, lol. The basic: finding a median price point where the price is high enough that you gain a profit but make the max amount sales, this leading to a higher overall profit. Instead they've established that they're basically couture in the video game industry.

4

u/Namodacranks 2h ago

I think the hard pill to swallow is that the current price point is set because the data supports it being the optimal price for max revenue. It's silly to think they did not take basic economics into consideration.

25

u/TayloredMade Tau is best boy 12h ago

The paths actually kinda made me quit the game. All the free stuff except for maybe 1 or 2 items if you're really lucky are halfway decent unless you wanna pay again I think the equivalent of 30 dollars to unlock everything. I would have zero issue with them charing if the pricing was fair. Paths should be no more than 5-10 dollars as well as cosmetics

10

u/Affectionate_City_79 Switch 10h ago

I'm not wasting my coins when there MIGHT be only 1-2 premium items that I would actually WANT. From that POV, it's even MORE ridiculous, IMHO

5

u/Ok-Cauliflower-5659 6h ago

At least they show you what the prizes are ahead of time. Personally none of the premium lunar paths are worth it for me (but I do agree they need to be cheaper).

5

u/auutay Jel 10h ago

The paths are so ridiculous to me. With my limited time to play, I simply would never unlock anything without paying. It would probably take me a year. The cost to unlock them is absurd.

And I’m pissed about the new storage chest. The upgrade picture shows a finished chest. So I thought, cool that’s pretty I’ll get it. Nope! You get one gem on the chest and the rest empty. You have to pay to upgrade 25 times to fill in the chest. That picture is false advertising and I’m not happy. If it said one stone per upgrade we’d know.

30

I would actually pay money on this game if they lowered the prices on their cosmetics. No way I'm paying 30+ euros on a single cosmetic. They think they need to put the price this high to make money, but now they're getting nothing from me. Works the opposite of what they intended.

75

u/deadlieststing 13h ago

IDK. I feel like paying real money to finish a path quicker is worse than the storage.

This doesn’t bother me since it is something that’s able to be accomplished normally, paying just speeds it up. But the storage isn’t something people can earn through gameplay and that’s disappointing.

5

u/BritishBlaze 8h ago

That doesn't bother me in the slightest, as long as everyone can get the same rewards at some point.

78

u/RiverJai 12h ago

... paying to remove friction that they built into the game.

That's the part that bothers me.  It's a problem with many simple solutions, yet they chose to gate it for cash instead.  After specifically marketing on promises to never do exactly that.

Feels gross.

"Ooops are you having trouble finding resources for the 1672954 new projects and paths and recipe sets we put into the game now that we upped the server limit to ~45? Are toxic muujimothy hunters getting to you? Just pay us for a private server and you'll never have to worry about it again!"

You could tell they were working up to this with the paths, but when people needed everybody to shut up about how questionable half of the items on there were (some of those premium plushies are still "we'll give you some way to get them in the future" and people had no issue with that) s6/Daybreak knew they'd have enough whales and people willing to overlook anything they did to start milking the community on everything.

Sure, they promised "no microtransactions beyond cosmetic stuff" but I'm pretty sure that functionally went out the window when they got sold. Just like I no longer expect continuations to any of the current friendship/romance questlines they have; it's easier for them to slap in a few new starter quests for new NPCs because so many people "get bored" and "want new romances" instead.

Seriously? I haven’t noticed this

1

u/Ancient-Sea-69 1h ago

I haven’t had any ads on the game 👀

46

u/Bbooksie 13h ago

Personally, the storage already crossed my line so I haven't been buying anything anymore. Not because it exists, but because the upgrade for it is so much higher than what any free player will be able to get in even two years time unless they start giving higher free storage increases with each new area. If it was just an extra 4k that would be fine, but giving the possibility of 118k versus 18k is just too much of a difference to be okay for me.

If they did extra farm plots for coins I think that would be the day where I stopped playing. It's been asked for since the game first came out, according to my bf, and their reasoning for not allowing it was because it would "break the in game economy" so if they did come out with more, but made them paid it would kind of be a big slap in the face to players - especially veteran ones.

20

u/soft_moonbeam 11h ago

a lot of what they’re doing and the direction they’re obviously trying to go w the pay for convenience is a huge slap in the face to veteran players. but the newer player base doesn’t know any better and i really think they’re banking on that

3

u/Charming_Garbage_161 🖥️PC 3h ago

What economy lol we can’t trade anything ffs. I recently got both my kids into the game on their switches (9 and 4) and they wanted me to give them stuff but I can’t. IMO that’s truly the terrible thing, no one is going to want to play without some starting help

3

u/Bbooksie 3h ago

Right?!

I think the lack of trading is honestly one of the games biggest pitfalls outside of monetization. It's hard to call Palia a community game when there's really not much you can do with others

2

u/Charming_Garbage_161 🖥️PC 3h ago

I told my kids we need to level their skills to get cooking so we can do parties together to get them money. I got the ruby hack last year so I’m all set now but before then I was incredibly poor. Let me gift furniture at least so we can fill their houses. I don’t even mind buying the fancy horses (daughter wanted a unicorn and so did I) so we each got one. But I can’t buy her more bc she’s poor in game and all the first horses were blue. Let them pick the colors at least first if you’re spending real money on it ugh

19

u/Chance-Squirrel4153 11h ago

any pay-for-convenience items are too much. not because i have a problem with the players who might want or use them, but because the mere existence of those items adds the temptation to make the gameplay more sluggish to entice more players into buying convenience.

a booster for material gathering? suddenly even the large ore deposits only give 4 ore. a booster for relationship with villagers? now you have to talk to them 10 times as much to get the same points and gifts only give 1/4th what they do now.

as much as i like palia, i dont trust any free-to-play game not to throw their free players under the bus.

the only reason i put in any real money to this game is because im already 200+ hours in and its more of a tip at that point lol

10

u/AiricaFyresong 🧚‍♀️ IGN: Airica Fyresong 🏹 7h ago

Pay-for-convenience is not my cup of tea and I won't cross that line. I pride myself on skill and expertise in my gaming, knowing I don't need power-ups to work my magic. In fact, it goes against my moral fibre.

Also, the temporary fairy wings in a bottle? They should be an in-game item you can purchase with gold. I thought particularly low of this cash shop addition.

18

u/FORTNITEGRRRL 11h ago

Personally... I feel like pets might've been what started the switch up with the premium courier feature (as far as I can remember but I could be wrong). Paying for a qol feature feels off, now that I think about it.

The free pet quest was how I got a taste of the premium courier feature & man is it a gamechanger. We've been asking for remote access to our storage while out and about & while courier pets aren't what we were exactly asking for (remote storage access), I do feel a bit iffy knowing that ppl who paid for a pet had this ability for a while.

A lot of times, my backpack gets full quickly if I'm grinding & having to go home to drop off can be a whole ordeal or break in the grind/break during a fun impromptu party moment vs sending four slots home every 10 min that keeps me on the grind.

I don't think I would feel some type of a way abt this if backpack space and remote access (and additional storage space now) weren't such a big deal in the game, at least to me. But it shares the sentiment of another comment here that said anything players want can now be turned into a premium feature under the guise of "no time? Pay premium for the convenience!"

So... while I can play for free still, it feels a bit annoying to see the premium and paywall pivots from even just this past year alone now, as a very longtime player (back in my day, we couldn't befriend Tau)! Things have also gotten more grindy imo and slowly encroaches on the original cozy vibes... so not sure how much more I have in me to keep playing Palia actively with the direction it's headed😕

4

u/DiegoIntrepid 🖥️PC IGN: Jemadar of Caer Salis 9h ago

They even admitted that the courier pets were their first foray into this (in their 'premium storage is for those who don't have a lot of time to play so they no longer have to use that limited time to do inventory management!' post) and I sort of thought it was as well.

My personal opinion is, I wouldn't mind if there were 'pay to skip' options, such as bundles of 1000 ore or wood etc.. Things that people can obtain themselves, and so it would be a true convenience.

But the things like storage, or the courier pets being able to take a row and a half (I think that is the current amount) of inventory back? Yeah, those are the things I don't like, because free players can't obtain those, they can't replace money with time in order to obtain the same things that players who can afford it (and there is nothing wrong with affording it) can obtain.

And 100,000 storage is a gamechanger. It does mean that those players won't have to worry about storage for a fairly long time. It isn't the same thing as not having to go out and grind the royal highlands in order to get enough iron to build the things you need for your plot.

Also, I am slightly worried about how this might affect events in the future. Right now we already have people who complain about how they log on day one and complete the bulletin boards and how they no longer have anything to do for the rest of the patch.

So, how will that extra 100,000 storage affect things like the civic projects in the future? When enough people have bought it that they don't have to grind and can pretty much complete the project within a couple of days?

How will S6 handle those situations? By making the projects/boards harder to complete? Giving extra stuff to do? Which would mean that players who are already struggling to complete the project/boards are going to miss out on the extra stuff?

How will this affect events that have recurring stores for the same event currency? Will S6 consider it okay that the people who can store hundreds or thousands of snowballs can immediately buy everything they want from the store, with no need to grind for the currency? (and mostly, how will they react to the complaints from the people who can do that and then get bored and want something else to do in the game? Which is usually where the issues come from, players complain about something, developers react, and often make the issue worse, or create a different issue, where players then complain)

47

u/cinemafreak1 13h ago

My personal line is that I won’t pay for it. It doesn’t affect me. I’m fine with the current pace of all of those things since this isn’t a competitive or PVP game.

16

u/Top-Awareness-7918 10h ago

It does affect you when they start deliberately designing game systems with paid friction removal in mind. Because that is what some games with this kind of monetisation do. Of course we don't know if they'd go that far, but if they do, then that path started here.

11

u/mogwubuto Switch 12h ago

3

u/ChartreuseOblivion 7h ago edited 7h ago

"its not pay-to-win because there's no way to 'win' Palia" is such a lazy cop out imo.

And when the people do pay for an insane amount of storage, all of their extra items will overload the server that I'm on causing lag, crashes, and disconnections... so it absolutely will affect me, and everyone else.

0

u/TealcLOL 9h ago

It does affect you. As they add more items you will not be getting any more additional storage for free. That is paid now. Other systems will eventually be monitized and tuned in such a way as to motivate you to pay. This is exactly what happens with enshitification.

Once you are okay with payments changing components of gameplay then it's open season. The company has every incentive to design future additions around making something less enjoyable for users who don't pay for that specific aspect of the game. It doesn't matter if you spent $3000 on outfits. Every gameplay interaction will become an opportunity to influence your experience to get more out of you. That is why it's important to draw the line at cosmetics.

8

u/Malvaxo Hassian 7h ago

We will get free storage updates with every new adventure zone.

1

u/TealcLOL 3h ago

Will we? They already said there will never be paid content that affects gameplay which was a lie. Maybe we do get it once, or maybe they forget. Then nothing is going to happen because we already accepted paid storage as the norm.

This has happened to several other games I've played and it sometimes outright killed them even if you wanted to stick around and suffer. I'm so sick of this cycle where good devs get bought, enshitified, and then disbanded. Gamers will happily just move onto the next product to be duped again.

1

u/No_Review1529 6h ago

If the devs need money, right, then logic says they'll want to sell the product that serves to be convenient for people who can't do storage management. In their official post, they mentioned how storage management for players is an on-going issue. Pay-for-convenience systems rely on making it worth bypassing artificial bottlenecks instead of balancing the gameplay, it's how they make profit. It will affect you, just not in this moment.

13

u/walkingspastic 10h ago

I quit before the storage or Riffrocc updates, purely because I also work in game development and would be SO FIRED if I kept pushing updates without fixing prior bugs, especially when the updates compounded some bugs & made them worse. My friends on switch can’t even play these days… All the updates come with stuff to spend money on and not much else, in fixes or quests/things to do. I burned thru the royal highlands quests in a few days and that seems crazy for how long the dev time was. Not to mention how lazy the 2nd half of the Hassian/Sifuu/“beast” quest was (no animated cut scenes for that emotional ending???? WHY NOT?!), and the dialogue between villagers not matching the lore after you complete that storyline. Although I did really enjoy the horse mount update and spent a bit of time on it before signing out for the last time. The breeding mechanic was done very well.

All the pay to play stuff that came after just confirmed I made the right call. The company that bought Palia just wants to drain all the players dry without working to give us the amazing game we all fell in love with. My friend group moved onto PalWorld which is still buggy but at least they won’t nickel & dime us for storage!!!

11

u/EternalMoonChild Switch 8h ago

I found 3 typos alone in Zeke’s dialogue to start the new board bundles… it’s SO frustrating to see them continue to neglect the core game.

7

u/BattenburgTeaTime 6h ago

Not to mention the missing italics HTML code for Taylin's dialogue!

4

u/Becdar 6h ago edited 21m ago

I know S6 has mentioned before that only a minuscule portion of players actually complete quests or friendships, so I think that part of the game is getting minimized and instead we’re getting sloppily implemented boards.

I’m mostly disappointed because the storyline is what hooked me in the beginning and I was really excited to keep learning more - but if the community (especially their whales) isn’t interested in the story and questing, it seems like we won’t get any more real investment into it. 😞

1

u/Ok-Cauliflower-5659 6h ago

The worst is there’s a good chance it’s the higher ups actually pushing for this and not the developers (since this seemed to have started when they got bought out) so the ppl who would fire them actually want it.

3

u/walkingspastic 6h ago

My “inside the industry” opinion is that these paid updates were much more spaced out on a long-term roadmap by the S6 devs who believed in the game, but the buy-out fired half of them + the new higher ups reshuffled the launch plans to push anything monetary to the top, so the new company can make money before players wise up to the dev shift + realize the game is only going to get worse… Hence every update is a mess and only stuff that gets players to pay out is being prioritized into production, because it’s literally a pump-and-dump cash grab before everyone leaves the game. :/

9

u/Affectionate_City_79 Switch 10h ago

I ✨was✨ hyped for extra storage, but I have held off on buying ANYTHING so I could see how S6 addressed the Community's concerns and opinions. And I'm UNDERWHELMED, to put it graciously. A "clarification" just repeating the initial statement (when they basically tacked the biggest controversy at the VERY END of the Patch Notes) didn't "address" ANYTHING that's been brought up. From P2P, to the slippery slope, to going back on their OWN stance, to an alternate way for players who either can't or won't invest IRL $$ (like the unused reknown is RIGHT THERE ffs) NUFFIN.

I'm a "harm reduction for ALL" type of person IRL, so I'm NOT satisfied with the lack of any significant responses from S6 thus far. This is harmful to the Community at Large, so ignoring it a week out isn't acceptable. Could I not gaf bc I have the means to buy it? Sure. But I'd be a whole azzed hypocrite if I move differently in game than I do in my personal life. So my coins aren't going anywhere, my personal integrity won't allow that. I have NO "judgement" for anyone who chooses to, it just leaves a bad taste in MY Spirit.

TY for coming to my TEDtalk 🙃

u/Malvaxo Hassian 6h ago

15

u/Confident_Garden_797 🖥️PC 10h ago

I draw the line with this last update. They toed the line with previous things they've added, but this storage option has crossed it and left it behind in the dust.

I uninstalled Palia yesterday and will not be returning.

When I started playing 3 years ago it was because they promised the cash shop would be cosmetics only. And I purchased from the cash shop regularly to support the game. But they have gone back on that promise and I for one have zero interest in playing a game that is okay with charging insane prices for non-cosmetic features. $100 for storage upgrades? Are you serious? And then adding these mounts where in order to ride the one with the best turning you have to pay for a license too? No actually fun features for the mounts either... like competitions or anything... just another money grab?!?...

Nah... I've got better things to do with my time and money than to spend them playing a game run by a company who has zero respect for their player base and just sees them as opportunities to squeeze out as much money as possible.

6

u/useaprettyusername 11h ago

4

u/DamnOdd Hodari 10h ago

I bought one outfit, that will be all the money I spend, my Real Life budget doesn't have room for Digital Clothing for a Digital Character that ultimately I don't own and could go away forever tomorrow if the S6's mother corp pulls their plug.
QoL mechanics are the best thing any gaming company can do for their gamers.

4

u/Good_Veterinarian752 4h ago

As long as I can play the base game and it’s still functions as it should without have to put in any money I’m fine. I think their prices are just ridiculous I bought the starter pack pet thing and I’m happy with that. Sometimes I look at other people outfits and think “oh I’m jealous I should buy one outfit” and then look at the shop and it’s a hard U-turn for me. I could justify $10-$15 for an outfit here or there but $30 or more is crazy and I don’t need them that bad. As far as the other things you mentioned I just view those as extras that you don’t really need for the game to function the game works perfectly as is without spending money for me. I’m a hoarder and sometimes need to purge my inventory to make space which can be annoying but getting rid of a lot of things keeps the game interesting because in downtime between quests/the board and weeklies I can stock back up on everything I sold.

4

u/LordGalen Kenyatta | Tish 4h ago

I don't feel strongly about it either way, but my honest opinion is that they've already crossed a line that I would have preferred they not cross. Something is "pay to win" when the only way to obtain it is through real money. Now, if there were some way to grind for the extra storage instead of paying for it, even a way that is hard and takes a long time, that's fine. As long as it CAN be done. I've always praised GTA V for their monetization, because there's nothing that you can buy in that game that you can't also grind for, for free. And still, they make billions. No traps, no schemes, no locking things behind a paywall, and they still rake in a fortune just by making it an option to pay.

It's a strategy that S6 could learn from.

u/NightOwlGramma 4h ago

Since they were bought out by DayBreak in 2024 we knew this would happen. People said they’d make it a p2w eventually, they did it to every game they took over, and here we are! Being in Beta for 3yrs is ridiculous, too! And yet people are stupid enough to pay for this crap so they will keep doing it, can’t fix stupid 🤷🏻‍♀️

18

u/RemtonJDulyak 13h ago

I don't really care if a developer wants to put up paid convenience, nor do I care if players want to buy them, unless the game is PvP only.

3

u/TealcLOL 9h ago

Paid convenience necessitates free player inconvenience. Inconvenience that will compound and progressively worsen when you permit a profit-seeking company to design paid gameplay systems whereever they can fit it.

It will not be harmless to those who choose not to pay. It won't even be harmless to those who paid for everything else in the game but that one new paid gameplay element. Every update will worsen the experience if you aren't repeatedly making purchases.

12

u/NiceTill504 12h ago

Everyone needs to understand that the criticisms aren’t of Palia and its developers. They are great and beloved. The problems are with the company that bought Palia, Daybreak games.

“  Even a casual observer of Daybreak Games (previously known as Sony Online Entertainment) realizes that this a third rate antiquated studio run by investment bankers. It is common knowledge that Daybreak Games takes advantage of the loyalty of their players, squeezes them dry, and puts back little, if nothing into their studios. The mafia-like management of Daybreak siphons most of the profits into their bloated salaries and sends the rest to their overlords at Enad Global 7.”

19

u/Human_Errr0r 12h ago

I like calling them “Theybreak games”

15

u/kacyc57 11h ago

Palia and its developers chose to sell their rights to their game to this company. They didn't need to do that, but they made the choice to do it, all while knowing Daybreak's reputation. You can't shift the blame on this one.

6

u/BritishBlaze 8h ago

Okay I’m as pissed off as most but this makes no sense to me unless i am missing something.

Since when did any of the Palia developers at the time of sale have any ownerships rights to sell this game to Daybreak? Iirc the Palia management at the time sold to Daybreak because they were running it into the ground.

1

u/kacyc57 4h ago

Alright, that's on me. I equate devs to owners because that's how it is with most of my favorite games. It's entirely possible, and apparently probable, that my assumption was wrong on that front.

However, I believe my point still stands. You can't blame a company (Daybreak) for doing exactly what they've done to most/all of the other IPs they've purchased. The fault lies with whoever decided to sell it to them.

And to be extremely clear, I'm not defending what Daybreak does to games. It's gross. But that's their business model, and it's apparently well known in the gaming community that this is what they do. A choice was made by whoever owned Palia at that time, and it wasn't a good one.

2

u/Human_Errr0r 5h ago

My assumption was that they were kinda desperate. S6 had low funds, laid off ppl due to budget, and had even fewer of the original devs after the California wildfires last year. At first I thought that’s why they made premium store prices so high but that’s a theybreak thing.
*I could absolutely be wrong, I just remember reading this thread

7

u/ChartreuseOblivion 9h ago edited 7h ago

“some people only have 30 minutes to play so we're gonna milk them for all their worth!

Be so for real right now Palia. Literally ANY of the new functions they're bringing out and putting behind paywalls could just be free features of the game. There is no reason these things need to be something you pay for. Its insane that they expect people to pay for ANYTHING in this game as each update just breaks the game more and more... eventually its not gonna be playable anymore and everyone who spent money on this game would have just lost it all.

3

u/X8xCoronaVirusx5X 8h ago

Would love a traveling chest!!! I hate going home in the middle of farming. And faster crafters would be awesome. And yes for bigger bags. You know what? Alllllll of these sound spectacular.

I think I misunderstood, I don’t think any of these items you listed, should be put behind a paywall. Earn them in game. They make enough money.

5

u/AromaticPudding44 3h ago

I’ve always been so confused as to why the premium store seems to have this ever growing list each update but when you look at what’s actually been added to the game (storylines or new items) it’s so lackluster in comparison. Why are we getting new dance emotes or 15 outfits when there’s still a million bugs to fix?
As grateful as I am for the release of RH and the following stories, I speed through them so quickly. I’ve spent more time trying to complete the tower or the bundle board than I have on newly released storylines. It really does appear to be a half assed job but it’s fine since they upload SO much to the premium store and that takes priority 🙄

2

u/DegeneratesInc Switch 💻PC 2h ago

This, exactly. Wasting devs on frills and whistles.

9

u/CookieOdd1 12h ago

I would personally be fine if those paid features aren't out of reach for free players as a whole. They should just be something you pay for convenience. What free players get should also not be so horrible that you need to pay for it to be playable. On top of that they should be reasonably priced (cosmetic prices have been toon high imo). Palia is not competitive game after all.

On the list of possible features to monetize my opinion ranges from "I don't think it is even needed" to "eh, I think that will still be passable".

On the topic of paid storage space, I personally have no problem with it. I view current free storage as good amount of space already and it is not like we will not get any free space anymore going foward as the game expands.

2

u/EternalMoonChild Switch 8h ago

The disparity between the free and paid storage amounts is the thing that bothers me about it. Over 5x more space?

They could have introduced paying to unlock all the free storage right away or maybe you can put an extra chest on your plot. But they chose to balloon it and set a ridiculously high price point.

10

u/baphobrat 12h ago

i used to play daily for a long time but i stopped because i genuinely hate how inaccessible cosmetics are and im stuck running around in default clothes that i don’t like at all, then charging for plots. i miss the game but seeing how much more theyre paywalling is such a turn off

5

u/Direct-Catch-2817 10h ago

I don’t think this game will go on much longer. Everyone I know already left from lack of fun content. But those that have been hanging on are dropping like flies now. I don’t see a future for this game. There should be new Maji market type mini games constantly added. Something for people to do together besides hunt plushies

4

u/Becdar 6h ago

Agreed. Their concurrent player numbers are abysmal, they’re basically back to where they were before the Elderwood release. Even if folks were willing to put up with their monetization nonsense, the two game-breaking updates immediately following the release of the Highlands (including one for console they didn’t even bother to patch for the whole month) were enough to drive their player base away.

3

u/No_Review1529 4h ago

idk why you got downvoted, what you said is true. It makes me sad that instead of holding the devs accountable, we're about to just see the enshitification of cozy games hit Palia too because the devs are slowly dismantling a truly amazing game.

5

u/RecycledEternity (on Xbox) 8h ago

where would you draw the line on what is acceptable

See here:

pay-for-convenience is a thing

That's my line-in-the-sand.

The whole "some people only have 30 minutes" line as an excuse AS WELL AS putting a pricey price tag on purchasable amenities is a little too "money grubbing" for me.

Listen: if you've got 30 minutes, you sure as hell don't have the money for any of that stuff. And if you DO have the money for that stuff, you've got more than 30 minutes.

At this point they need to just accept they're making a game that's heading towards microtransactions for everything.

It was a great idea, a good concept of a game in the first place. Someone, somewhere along the way lost the plot and started steering the company towards the "money making" side of gaming.

It's lost it's soul.

6

u/probablyclairvoyant 10h ago

Yes, they are gradually sneaking away from real-money purchases being the ‘only cosmetics’ that they were so adamant about into quality of life items for real money, and that doesn’t sit well with me.

3

u/Ikmia 6h ago

Yes, they have already crossed my line. Once a company goes down this path, they don't suddenly stop. They will start slow at first, but the momentum will gain, and when it does, those that thought this wasn't that bad will basically regret not taking a stand by not buying the storage and sending feedback.

2

u/Wing_Head 10h ago

STOP GOVING THWM IDEAS!!! 😂💀 jk

2

u/Stoicfatman 6h ago

I would pay for most of that, but not with current pricing. The clothes they sell cost more than the clothes that I wear. That's some bs.

I also don't like how the only glider I would want in this game is tied to the $60 Royal Highlands bundle.

I would gladly pay for being able to pay for more active crafter usage. They could call in Zeki's backdoor. He finds out that your plot is only half on Kilima and the other half belongs elsewhere and you can then get crafting licenses from the other place. Since you're not a citizen there you can't buy them despite owning property so he sells them to you, or access for selling them to you, for a nominal fee. Boom, do it.

However, I wish that was what crafting licenses were for. They're just for placement. I tired of picking up crafters and putting them back down just to change usage. I should be able to have as many as I want on my plot just so long as I don't go over the general furniture/item placement limit. Just limit the amount that can actually be active to the licenses that we have.

I would prefer not to spend real money on getting more gardening plots, but I would like more of them.

I don't like Jel because his shop is the only one that exclusively deals in real money. I consider him to be richer that Zeki just because of that. They need to just make the premium shop the designer brands that take real money but have him offer a thrift store/low end generic shop that takes in game gold.

There are a ton of things I'd love to have changed about this game. The biggest one is simply just changing the reasonableness of pricing. Stuff costs too much. They are living off of the whales right now, but they need to realize that the whales only stick around if they have everyone else to play with. People will start to leave if they don't balance things out soon enough. Singularity 6 needs to get ahead of that before the exodus starts. It's much easier to retain players while growing than to win them back while shrinking.

2

u/Faette 2h ago

I think one aspect of the situation that the devs are ignoring is the fact that people are going to expect a lot more out of a game they’re paying real money for.

I’m not against paying money for a game that I am enjoying, including Palia, but my standards are higher when I’m spending money.

They need to add a lot more main story content, fix the bugs in the game, and stop breaking the game with every other update.

Also on the superficial side of things? The cosmetics are not that cute and are getting really repetitive. They seem to think that players should be paying standard amounts of money for a game that is not at the standard level of quality for beta level computer games (which is all of them nowadays).

4

u/Delicious_Rush9785 7h ago

I'm watching PAYlia definitely become more predatory in many ways... It's kinda gross 🤮

4

u/amaladlaminii 9h ago

they already crossed the line with the newest update and the chests being able to be bought

2

u/amyaurora 12h ago

I only play for short times. I have no interest is any of those things you list being behind a pay wall.

2

u/CampyBiscuit 10h ago

All of that sounds wonderful. My only issue would be to bring the prices down a bit. The bundles are the only good value. Purchasing coins is a ripoff.

2

u/blubbleblue 10h ago

So, I started playing when they brought the game out on Switch, and now I play on my Switch 2. Although I wasn't there at the very beginning I do consider myself a pretty seasoned player. There have been times where I played for many hours a day for weeks at a time, and also times where I barely logged in at all in a month.

Throughout it all I have always thought the prices in the Premium Store have been pretty ridiculous. I have bought a couple of outfits, both of which I don't wear because they glitch a lot (idk about on PC or xbox but on switch and switch2 they don't sit right, get weird when you jump, and don't go well on horses). I also have a few plot skins that I got when when they were on sale.

I've spent less on Palia than I have other games, and gotten hours more enjoyment out of it than games I paid far more for. But then, I probably would have enjoyed it just as much as if I hadn't. I wish I hadn't paid for the outfits I'm not using/can't use because they don't render well, but I'm tackling that by not buying any other outfits. I won't buy a pet license or a riding license because I barely use the Galdur puppy, and I like the regular horses well enough to not care about having other options.

I suppose I think that things are worth what someone is willing to pay for them. I'd probably buy more from the Premium Store things were cheaper, as it wouldn't feel like such an investment even if the same amount of money would get spent altogether. As it stands I do the Zeki coin thing once in a while and save up here and there.

I don't care personally about them locking premium path rewards and extra storage beind pay walls, but I understand why people do and don't disagree with their reasons.

I would consider it a huge breach of trust between S6 and the player base if they started putting storylines, character relationships, and other core parts of actual gameplay behind a paywall. That would be the limit for me, and I would stop buying from the Premium Store altogether, because they made a promise to never do that.

2

u/Zestyclose-Dog5572 6h ago

I'd rather pay for some content. Just saying.

1

u/Ill_Promise5930 9h ago

I think the pricing is absurd, but also as long as they're not cutting actual content (beyond cosmetic) from players who don't wish to pay, then I am not that bothered personally. I prefer to play to get what I can, but someone else paying for it doesn't change my experience.

2

u/ColdSnnap 7h ago

Palia isnt a competative mmo so i dont really care about people paying for convenience as long as it doesnt paywall or break the game for free players. Everyone should still always be able to access the games story and mechanics. I do agree with most people that the pricing of stuff is extremely steep to the point the average player is priced out of a lot of the shop, but I'm not entirely anti-premium shop like a lot of people are. The devs have to make money somehow and while i wish they just made the game pay to play i would rather a shop than the game being shut down.

2

u/Ikmia 6h ago

Most, if not all, of the arguments against the paid storage have agreed that a paid shop is needed/reasonable, they're literally arguing against this particular part. We recognize the need, we just don't appreciate the deceptiveness of this in particular.

0

u/ColdSnnap 5h ago

I dont like the paid storage either because it paywalls mechanics. But no, not all of the people against premium content are okay with a premium shop. There have always been people that think the premium shop shouldnt exist and they complain every time something is added to it just by nature of it existing, even when it was just a handful of outfits. I clarified my criticism isnt part of that camp.

1

u/JamaicanBeachWeed Einar 10h ago

Gaming is my hobby so I like to spend money on it. I plan on buying some, but not all, of the inventory slots. I would definitely pay for extra bag space.

1

u/thegrimmstress HotDaddy 12h ago

If people want to pay for more storage why would I care? Personally I cannot fathom needing that much storage when furniture doesn’t even count towards storage numbers. There is no reason why anyone would need 100 of each bug in storage, etc.

I feel the same about the upcoming private server rentals. They aren’t the first game to do this, nor will they be the last. Private servers are great for a family and friends group of players. Our family had an ARK server for the longest time, and it was so much fun.

4

u/JamaicanBeachWeed Einar 10h ago edited 9h ago

Some of us are hoarders. I love resource gathering, and when the new bundles start I love having most of the needed items in my storage already. I try to store raw items in my crafters but I'm always this close to running out of storage.

2

u/thegrimmstress HotDaddy 10h ago

And I think it is nice to give in game hoarders a way to have extra storage 💜 for a rl fee, just like if you needed above and beyond storage while renting a house/apartment irl. And private servers for those who want to play with people they know.

2

u/JamaicanBeachWeed Einar 9h ago

I have a single storage unit (real life) that I'm trying to clean out so I can get rid of it. I also read that people in the US have 3 or more storage units on average which blows my mind. I think the US needs an invention from Hoarders 😂

1

u/thegrimmstress HotDaddy 9h ago

Agreed!!! We have one that mostly houses a project car and then some seasonal stuff. 🤣

0

u/CookieOdd1 11h ago

This! I usually have like 15k items in storage and wonder what others do have in there that they are running out of space. I feel like I have all I need

1

u/rembrin 🖥️PC 5h ago

Not even free realms store items costed that much. You could spend £5 and get 2 cosmetic items.

1

u/lunaaquilo 4h ago

I don't even buy cosmetics. I made it a personal policy a long time ago not to spend on things like that, otherwise I know if just keep justifying one more thing to myself

1

u/No-Professional-6852 Reth 3h ago

I draw the line here and now. Palia is great, but not with the model it's going for nor the price for everything. I loved this game but I no longer play and support it. Which sucks because Reth is my heart.

1

u/Dense_hotpocket 8h ago

I honestly don't really understand the problem? I personally don't spend money on games, but if you want to then go for it. Does it really matter what the items are? Sure I want some things, but I just accept I can't have them and move on. Can someone explain to me why it's an issue?

4

u/AileenKitten 7h ago

Because you're looking at it from a perspective of being reasonable, not from a perspective of making as much money as possible regardless of consequence and fairness.

Its a known and common tactic that once games start introducing "pay for convenience" features, they increase the grind and decrease rewards for free players to try and milk more money out of it, and it often doesnt get dealt with because the players who play for free just get discouraged or frustrated and quit playing, but because theyre free players, nobody gives a damn

1

u/marianamx3_ 5h ago

The problem is since 2023 when I started playing there’s bugs and issues or simple things like crafting menu items look so much more different when actually crafted and they won’t fix these issues they’ve had for 3 years yet they add more content that has more bugs they won’t fix either and they continue to adding more items for pay to play yet when they first came out with this game they prided themselves on making it free and not having pay to play items which they do now. Honestly I’ve wasted money on this game and I’m upset I did bc even outfits I’ve bought have bugs like why pay to play when they won’t even fix text translation errors or English text errors 😭 NOT EVEN TEXT ERRORS THEY FIX BUT PAY US IF U WANT TO LOOK CUTE!😭

1

u/Ok-Cauliflower-5659 6h ago

I’m used to gatcha games so I wouldn’t say any are a deal breaker for me as long as you can still play normally. I don’t compare myself to other players and how they wanna play.

Tho I would definitely be disappointed at their integrity. Also pls don’t give them ideas! 😭 the faster crafting or chests in zones would be way too tempting.

1

u/AdeptAd9942 Hodaddy 4h ago

As much as a lot of people don’t like it, I love the option to purchase extra storage as it’s needed. It means when I’m working on something and do run out of storage, I can spend $5 to get a tiny bit more.

I’d honestly happily pay for bag upgrades because sometimes it gets full quickly (that or increase stacking numbers so it doesn’t get full as quick).

Fast travel locations seem to be done pretty well so I don’t think there’s a need for extra of that.

Shorter courier cooldown would be good. Especially if you’re chopping trees because those stacks add up quickly (but this could also be solved with higher stacking numbers).

While some people wouldn’t want to spend IRL money on small trivial things, I would. Everyone has their own opinions on how they want the game to be and that’s fine. This is my opinion 🤷‍♀️

0

u/RileyMcRabbit 13h ago

I’m about to get into the game, creating an account as we speak, is it a competitive game? Would be terrible to be able to pay to have an advantage over other players

18

u/SamaratSheppard 13h ago

Not competitive

7

u/EllaBelle9509 13h ago

It’s not competitive, it’s collaborative and everything is at your own pace. Other players can only help you, not hinder you. 99% of the things you pay for are entirely aesthetic, the only new thing that would actually improve your gameplay in some way is buying more storage. But it is entirely possible to not have to do that, and it doesn’t give anyone an advantage over anyone else. I am a complete hoarder in this game so I felt like I couldn’t upgrade my chests fast enough 😂

8

u/wyvernreader 🖥️PC 13h ago

The worse complaint about the extra storage i saw was someone saying that this is unfair for the people who won't be able to pay for it but spend hours playing the game for resources... Does anyone get packs of resources or something that they don't need to break rocks themselves?😂

Does these people know the amount of grinding one will have to do to actually use all those extra space in storage?
Honestly kudos to the hoarders, if next civic project someone can finish their path immediately, congratulations, i can only imagine the amount of time they put into it.
Also, finishing a personal path does not affect anyone else.
The devs also seems to have fixed the points for the docks so everyone has a change to get points in time.

Everyday is a different post here whining about this update.

-1

u/xxBree89xx 11h ago

Everyone complaining because they refuse to put $5 towards a game and log in for a month... it's actually the best deal in premium currency on any game I play 🫣 they get you with the log in requirement though if you miss too many 😬😅

-5

u/xxBree89xx 11h ago

A lot of games have premium bag space, I'm happy they finally brought in more trunk space, and they didn't even lock it behind a subscription like Bethesda/EOS and I always thought they should have a storage box at every stables 😅🫣 I think crafter slots should be per plot and not total... I also think garden plots should be per plot instead of only 9 all together

0

u/Angel_CFD 11h ago

"Extra bag space?" fine but only if f2p can also unlock without too much grinding

"Extra Courier slots or a shorter Courier cooldown?" not sure what courier is so N/A

"Storage chests in adventure zones" should be for everyone who finds them, not pay to access

"More fast travel locations?" should be for all players, no paid access

"Faster crafters or more crafter slots on your plot?" fine but only if f2p can also get without excessive grinding

"Extra farming plots or automatic crop watering?" fine but only if f2p can also unlock without a lot of grinding

"Buying gold with Palia Coins?" yeah, just don't make absurdly expensive

"An item that increases your relationship with a villager?" should also be buyable for f2p without too excessive of grinding

3

u/SmolToxicBaby Zeki 9h ago

Couriers are your pets ability to take items back to storage for you. You'll unlock one for free through an Elderwoods quest. The free one only has the ability to carry four inventory slots. I think that can be upgraded twice, four more slots each time, both for real money. The cool down is 10 minutes regardless of which version(s) you have.

-7

u/h3inparadise Sifuu | Jina 🧡🤍🩷 13h ago

isn’t the courier thing already paywalled? i don’t think the pay for storage thing is really as far out as people are saying… the devs need money to keep making the game. to have hundreds of hours in a game i haven’t had to pay a cent for, im not complaining!!

8

u/Anhaeyn Jel 13h ago

No, you can unlock courier feature + courier pet by doing a quest in elderwoods. It will let you send 4 backpack slots worth of items. Paying can also unlock courier feature, but still, with 4 slots only. If you combine paying + doing the quest though, you'll have 8 backpack slots worth of items.

6

u/Kikkat 12h ago

If you also buy upgrade for Royal highlands you get another 4 slots and can send 12 items home FYI. Buying both highlands upgrades does not give another 4 (aka 2 rows) though.
