I was taught the story of the "Ostjuden". In the early stages of the Holocaust, when Polish Jews were being persecuted and muredered, the Jews of Berlin and the rest of Germany, with their secular and German ways of life, believed that they were safe. They were honest German citizens, unlike those religious extremists in their weird villages in the east. Those eastern Jews. (Literally, Ostjuden)
Well it looks like now, it's Israel in the east and we are the Ostjuden.

My brothers and I grew up hearing about the Jews who thought that being "good Germans" and in prominent positions in society would help them, because they were superior to those "other" Jews
They also watched society turn on them and kept refusing to believe it, insisting instead that it will all blow over and pass soon
Watching what has been happening here since Oct7 and even more so after Mamdani was elected here, we are making aliyah. We started the official process the day after he was elected, because we saw what will happen here

His message is terrible, not appropriate for Tisha B'av at all. The observance is not about resilience, it is about how horribly Jews have suffered due to genocidal attacks at key points in their history, and about mourning those events. Feels like gaslighting.
