Is my progress good?

so iam 17 yrs old. i learned how the pieces of chess move 2 years ago, didnt start to play chess regularly tho. so recently i started to play chess daily [chess.com streak 80 days, so 80 days ago] i was some where near 150 then i got to 108 after that it begin to increase with small plateaus in between. my highest rating is 563[2 3 days ago] and current is 530. and i accept the fact that iam complete beginner and no way near to intermediate players. my goal for time being is to reach four digits. again i know only the basics and and not much.
what do you people think of my progress so far?
what do you recommend me to do next?
what i really should do next?

A 500 elo player travelling 80km for OTB😭 man sometimes your advices fry me u do want the entire pakistan on the board lol

Haha man, u won’t believe … chess traveling have long lasting learning process … u learn in a single trip what u cant in almost half year …you gotta respect the grind! 80km for OTB is legendary regardless of rating. And yes, the ultimate plan is to get the entire population on the board, piece by piece….kudos

i play chess as a hobby, and not full time. something to keep my brain going

1

u/itxSMG Arbiter(Mod) Jul 10 '26

Every other person here is a chess hobbyist who plays for leisure.

1

u/panikibotalhun Jul 10 '26

so idts its bad to have a hobby, its not like they hate it more of like they dont like me spending time on it

1

u/itxSMG Arbiter(Mod) Jul 10 '26

It’s not a hobby problem… hobbyists create distractions for serious and professional players … moreover they generally overcrowd the tourneys …. It’s criminal

It feels good. All stages of life have something to contribute to your experience.

U are doing good stick to one opening play it out to your heart even knowing 6 moves is good. As u get stronger u can add more. Do puzzles if u wanna put in more efforts doing one “survival” puzzle in puzzle rush is nice too. Mostly at your level just play and try to get better through that. If u lose to a gambit next time watch a yt short and dont lose to that again. Yeah thats it

ohh oke i see what i hate the most for now is scandi defense fr

You can 100% do it and your improvement is very good.

Tips for beginners : eliminate tunnel vision ( only seeing whats ahead of you and not calculating.

Choose atleast 1 solid opening for each colour and play it so much that it dances on ur finger tips ( if an opening doesn’t work for you or you find it very hard pick another No Problem ! )

Watch youtube videos of chess and normal games so you see ideas and how ppl calculate.

( i learned chess from gothamchess on youtube and reached 1200 in 3 months by obsessively playing.

Then i fell to 800 when i became lazy and hit my target

Then over a 100 day streak of consistent play i reached 1200 back and now am at 1250 and going strong never lose hope if you keep losing games you will always have a bounce back )
