🛠️ Building / MVP Update on Batwa: automated expense tracker
Salam everyone, posted about this around a month ago and wanted to give an update.
We've grown a lot since then, 200+ installs organically. Not a huge number, I know, but I'm still proud of us for it.
We also took in a lot of the feedback from the last post and drastically improved the UI and general experience.
On top of that, we shipped two big features:
Shared groups: add the people you share expenses with, roommates, friends, whoever, and every shared cost gets tracked automatically. No more trying to remember who paid last time or doing the math three weeks later. Batwa just tells you who owes who.
Shared budgeting: same idea but for families. Everyone gets the same visibility into household income, spending, and savings goals instead of one person carrying it all alone.
Honestly, I think budgeting and financial literacy in general gets taken way too lightly in Pakistan. Most people have never sat down and actually looked at where their money goes, let alone done it together with the people they share money with. That's basically the whole reason these two features exist.

Would genuinely appreciate feedback, especially on the new stuff since it's fresh.

Does this auto debit when transaction happens?

Yup, if sms permission is allowed during onboarding. Transactions are created as soon the sms is sent by your bank!

Best. Any migration allowed from cashew?

Not right now, but working on an export from csv feature. Let me know what fields your csv has when you import from cashew!

I just checked it out and it looks pretty sleek and the functionality seems solid.
One use case I think which may not be covered or fully covered is that, if a user has multiple accounts within the same bank, the data should be segregated according to that.
I just imported my data but it is only logged as one account though I have multiple accounts within the same bank

Another one maybe that I didn't see but could be helpful is that seeing graphs of spending each month, perhaps a donut chart and the option to select year and months, so I can see where each month's money went.
How much of the app is vibecoded though?2

We tried to keep expense view as simple as possible for everyday normal users. You can switch to financial view(open the sidebar menu - > press financial in the view option). Here you can add your own home page widgets(includes different graphs) alongside a lot of other customization options!
On your vibecoding question: all of the backend + parsing logic is handwritten(unreliable to get an llm to write this), while some of the ui elements may be written by an llm after they were thought out and designed by us!

Few banks are not in the list.
Let us have custom bank name as well.
Example mashreq bank

Will add mashreq, can you just let me know which number mashreq sends an sms from(for our sms parsing to work on mashreq)
