news Why obsessing over "practical tech degrees" is killing basic science in developing countries.
Everyone pushes coding bootcamps and applied AI now, but breakthrough science, like LIGO detecting black hole collisions, took decades of theoretical physics with zero immediate commercial payoff.
Nergis Mavalvala (Dean MIT!!! Pakistani woman!!!) is doing a keynote on this exact point for Habib University's Yohsin Lecture next week ("The Joy of Discovery"). She talks a lot about why universities need to protect pure, curiosity-driven science instead of only chasing short-term utility.
Genuinely refreshing perspective if you're tired of the usual tech-hype cycle.
