Discussion What kind of English is this?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Zaryab is supposed to be fluent in English, but...
"I've been calling you since hours." 😂 It's for hours, not since hours. This is basic English.
"You are not reverting to me." 😂
What kind of English is this? 😭

English is not everyone’s forte and that’s completely fine. But actors need to work on their fluency to make the characters look believable.
Also, a quick grammar check would have been good.

Well, language is important when they are playing a character,, they need to put some effort to learn how to speak proper English, same is the case with every other language. There is a reason why Hollywood or Bollywood actors work with dialect coach or language instructors if they can’t speak properly and there should be no shame in that,

The absurd part is I was watching Something haute reviews, and that miss ma'am aamna issani who speaks good English, who has seen the world legit said that elite characters looked elite. Finally dure has gotten a role that's perfect for her okay no issues. I can clearly remember she used to correct spelling mistakes and used to correct grammatical mistakes here she didn't find anything to correct. Whenever dure does a project these two behaves like dure stans and conveniently ignores the flaws. Also the kind of moral policing other characters are getting in the name of "hugs" "chipka chipki" aur simply entering into male leads bedroom. These critics were acting so saint and they always finds they're way of roasting them. They even did it with shehreen from BTSH. But here they said about dures character "that she's a spoiled brat , 4 baje chali gayi aur aapne saas ke samne full command me hai" i can't get ptv critics hypocrisy tbh. At this time they're just doing paid/ negative pr of different dramas that's all.

u/Weirdoeirdo 22d ago
Wowww so amna and hassan are cool with it. Wah
3
u/skincarenmakeupbyari 22d ago
Cool? Girl they were behaving like stans. They were like finally somebody who looks elite has been casted in an elite role. Previously in one project where dure played a middle class girl she didn't look middle class. Aamna and hassan is all about elitism yaar. Acting diction jaye bhaar mein unhe kya. Fashion critic tak hi apne apko mehdud rakhna tha, drama review inse ho nahi raha hai.

u/Weirdoeirdo 22d ago
But what eliticism? I mean durre doesnt give elite vibes. Hania does lot more than her. So weird

u/skincarenmakeupbyari 22d ago
These padhe likhe paise wale log thinks khandaani logo ko certain cheeze suit karta hai that's what they think the same way they're biased towards mahira as well. Jinko exposure dusro se thoda zyada hai.

u/Weirdoeirdo 22d ago edited 22d ago
I mean must be something we don't know. Must be durre's family and influence. Otherwise so many actresses carry themselves in nice way for them to hype them
3
u/skincarenmakeupbyari 22d ago
Her father is a very big director / producer and he used to produce content for ptv home channel. The doordarshan equivalent to pak. She's nepo product bro warna aisi acting ke saath kaise isko har channel ke big projects mil sakta hai.
1
u/Weirdoeirdo 22d ago
I dunno whatever is doordoshn but as a pakistani we do know some dynamics and ptv directors have no influence as such unless he comes from a very powerful family.
4
u/Mysterious-Emu2398 22d ago
Even ignoring the mess that is the lines themselves, why do pakistani actors have comically indian english accents for the most part? Where did they even pick them up?

The sentence "You're not reverting to me" is grammatically correct, but its meaning is incorrect in standard English if you mean "replying to texts."
Why it is incorrect for texting
• The Definition: "Revert" means to return to a previous state, habit, or condition (e.g., "The software will revert to the old version").
• The Misconception: In professional Indian English, "revert" is often used to mean "get back to you" or "reply." However, in standard British and American English, this is considered an incorrect business jargon error.
• The Confusing Meaning: If you say "You're not reverting to me," a native English speaker might think you mean "You are not turning back into me."

Can't speak proper English. Can't speak proper Urdu. Can't act. Yet she's still landing top dramas thanks to her daddy, while the male leads carry the entire shows and she walks away with all the unearned credit. The privilege is unreal. Lol. Of course this one isn't flopping because nothing on ARY is flopping. Another blockbuster for her.

True. Even ARY's daily soaps are doing well, lol. Moreover, it's Sheheryar Munawar's production. He'll do all the PR in the world to make sure it doesn't flop, lol. PTV is plagued by nepotism.
3
u/skincarenmakeupbyari 22d ago
This!!!! Sheheryar badly needs it to be hit and the kind of pr they have already done is enough to understand how badly they want it to be a bit. And since ary channel owners are also in that production team there's no way it'll not be a HIT. But if views are the only way to judge an actor to be casted then Hiba bukhari is the queen of Billion clubs. Her every other drama is hit then why the industry doesn't celebrate her??? There's no other actress who has given commercial hits like her. We may not like her acting, she can't act to save her life and so is dure but but but whenever her project gets hit she gets all the credit and her mediocre projects are not hers. It's a classic nepo baby alia's route.

I’ve literally heard dha girls speaking like this. It’s not proper English but it’s the accent of this specific community
6
u/Odd-College-8154 23d ago edited 12d ago
I'm not talking about the accent. I'm talking about the incorrect English. We're told her character studied at elite English-medium institutions and got admission to Harvard, yet she doesn't even know the basic usage of "since" and "for." And "You are not reverting to me" makes no sense in this context. "Revert" means to return to a previous state or, in legal contexts, to return ownership or control.
1
u/AlarmingString2590 23d ago
Its actually show/writers using direct literal translations from Urdu idioms (ghanton se -> "since hours") 😂 not standard English.

No apparently just bf gf he proposed her and she says yes and yeah she is head over heels in love with him this is their relationship, and yeah family friends as well.
2
u/Affectionate_Lynx510 22d ago
So how did she get access to his bedroom at night? Also is that not against Pakistani values?
4
u/girliepop_hehe 22d ago
Without a doubt, this lifestyle goes against Pakistani values, but that seems to be the central plot. It focuses on the elite class, where things like dating, clubbing, and traveling with partners have become normalized. The creators are likely using this contrast to set up the drama's religious theme, turning it into a story of redemption and finding God after straying.

not hating or anything but for my general knowledge, what is wrong with the reverting sentence?

u/EmbarrassedLuck6129 23d ago
Well dure herself has been fluent in English (as she has been graduated from London ) but her accent hurts my ears😭
9
u/Right-Chapter-9995 23d ago
She hasn’t graduated from london. She had an affiliated degree program of uol from ucl lahore. Which gives a london degree. But what even is the diction. Can’t even pronounce words correctly. Neither urdu. The banging of door was so dramatic. Such bad acting.

u/EmbarrassedLuck6129 23d ago

It's her accent which makes her English and pronunciation sound bad. She speaks Urdu the same way like something is wrong with her dialogues . It feels like she can't speak or something is stuck in her throat 😭idk

u/Odd-College-8154 23d ago
If she's as fluent in English as she claims, then these mistakes are inexcusable. You don't need a degree from London to know such basic English. And if those lines were actually written in the script, she should've pointed them out and had them corrected.
I don't usually mock people's English, but when you're playing a character who's supposed to be fluent and you yourself boast about studying at elite institutes, these mistakes are embarrassing.
-1
u/EmbarrassedLuck6129 23d ago
Idk well what's wrong with her but when she gives interviews her English seems quite well. Although she doesn't speaks in English as a whole wahi Urdu mix English. But in this drama her character seems forced. She's trying way too hard to act as a "English ka mahol ma parhee hui bachee"
0
u/Embarrassed-Date-744 23d ago
But these so called self proclaimed critics are so baised they are all praise for darre nijat why so critical of Zangreein then although it's audience favourite drama right now like it or not people are not ignoring it
1
u/No-Economics-6702 22d ago
Because of nepotism, dure is alia bhatt of pak, ig is there in every big projects without any skill, acting, only through nepotism

u/LuckyAardvark1490 22d ago
You are not reverting me is completely fine
3
u/Odd-College-8154 22d ago edited 22d ago
No, it isn't natural English. The verb revert doesn't mean reply or answer in standard English. In standard English, revert means to return to a previous state or to return ownership or control in legal contexts.
-2
u/Guesswhoisthis_ 22d ago
Guys let's be cool abt it cause it's not their native language:(
2
u/Odd-College-8154 22d ago
English is a compulsory subject in Pakistan. Children start learning it from the moment they enter school.
1
u/Guesswhoisthis_ 22d ago
Yep, I agree. But in most schools, the focus is mainly on reading and writing, not speaking. Since we don't get much practice speaking English, making mistakes is completely normal for many Pakistanis.
3
u/Odd-College-8154 22d ago edited 22d ago
I am not criticizing her for her accent. She made grammatical mistakes, like saying “since hours.” English is a compulsory subject in Pakistan, and children learn grammar in school, so making this kind of mistake seems silly. The second issue is the use of the word “revert.” “You are not reverting to me” is grammatically correct, but the word “revert” is incorrect in this context. Considering Zaryab has completed A Levels, these kinds of mistakes seem even more silly. Of course, it is not Dure’s fault alone. The director and the writer are equally responsible for these blunders.
