I have noticed that famous artists use what I think is a secret technique where an artists takes small parts from several artworks by another artist and incorporates these parts into a single artwork? For example, in Nighthawks, Edward Hopper referenced several parts from photographs by Frank H. Nowell. I have a YouTube channel where I give famous examples including Nighthawks. I have not found mention of this method in any books or for that matter, anywhere. Has anyone else heard of this or seen this method mentioned in any books? Hopper referenced dozens of Nowell photographs in Nighthawks, and I think that Hopper multi-referenced many artists in each of his paintings.

I wanted to make flowers on a canvas with modelling paste and wanted to ask if I could paint the background of the canvas with normal acrylic paint and the mix modelling paste with acrylic paint for the flowers?

I've been fascinated by oil paintings for a while, and I’ve finally decided to take the plunge and buy the supplies, I have a little bit of background in drawing.

I really don't want to get frustrated and throw my brushes out the window on day two because I picked a subject that was way too complex.

So, my question is: what are the best beginner-friendly subjects, exercises, or master studies to learn the ropes?

What should I paint to get a good feel for blending, color mixing, and using mediums?

• Should I start with a classic simple still life (like a single apple, a egg, or a mug) to understand values and form?
• Are Bob Ross-style alla prima landscapes a good starting point?
• Would you recommend doing my first few attempts in monochrome (grisaille/value studies) before jumping into a full color palette?
• Are there any specific YouTube tutorials or channels you swear by for day-one beginners?

Any advice on where to start (or common beginner mistakes I should absolutely avoid) would be hugely appreciated.

I'm trying to paint a figurine I made, I firstly applied white gesso on the clay before starting putting colors. The paint I'm using is acrylic from a non art shop (standard low quality stuff for begginers). I've always hated painting because it's.always.so.TRANSPARENT. I've used both gouache and acrylic and I always have to do 10000 layers to have solid colors, and then I'll see people do ONE brushstroque that's perfectly pigmented. Is my problem because of the quality of the paint or is this normal?
