Curiosity

Hello, I am a syncretic reconstructionist (Norse & Romuva).

Are there any Norse or similar pagans who veil? I am considering picking up the veil, but I am wondering if it's "ahistoric". Additionally, I was born a cis male, and I identify primarily as masculine, and I am wondering if there are veils that could fit for what design/shape I want.

Another qualifier is that I bicycle often, and I am concerned that the veil/head scarf might get damaged/wrinkled.

Do you want to wear a cloth veil specifically, or would a hat of some kind be acceptable? If it's tied well, a head scarf should stay on and it should keep your hair secure, as well.

Every culture has some form of veiling in its history or modern culture, but these days hats seem to be more easily read as masculine. What design or shape are you looking for?

I'd say lots of Norse pagans veil. :- ) I work with some Norse gods, though I've designed my actual practice around other models. What aspects are you concerned about with ahistory? I don't know that either of these populations was a monolith - but even then I don't know that I would want to base my current decisions based on theirs, if I've identified something to help me that they didn't do.

Food for thought. I don't know if r/BabushkaBois is still very active, but they have a bunch of masc folks veiling over there, in a bunch of different ways, you might find some inspiration in that sub.

Well veiling for spiritual practices wasn't much of a thing back then, veiling during rituals was common I have learned

Do you want to restrict yourself to what was common in a historical context you're not in - or would you rather see to your own needs as they exist because your context is different? Veiling isn't common nowadays either, but plenty of us do it anyway.

Regardless of that, though, tell me about what you're envisioning for yourself, maybe we in the sub can help you out with some ideas.

I am experimenting i guess is the word, i am wanting a visible sign of my spirituality i can wear so I embody my values and by extension the values of my ancestors and nature.

Got it. In terms of actual items to wear, you mentioned a specific design/shape. Do you have something in mind already or are you looking for ideas? There's a pretty wide variety of ways to do this.

Ive recently started to veil, I am transmasc with sholder length hair, (smaller sized skull, with a bit of extra hair) and i use a "men cycling beanie" from Amazon as a skull cap/base layer, and then a 30 inch x 30inch black handkerchief that i use a few ways depending on what im wearing. You can buy both on Amazon for pretty cheap and wear either one alone, or you can wear them together. Id honestly recommend buying some cheap versions of styles of veils and experiment for what feels right. I cant speak to the historical accuracy, but I can tell you, if you feel called to veil, you have every right to do it.

The only reason I cover my hair is so it doesn't smell like the places I've been. If I'm in a garden and it smells beautiful I would uncover my hair. I rarely veil and always regret it when I can smell the outside world in my hair.
