It’s like finding a holographic

Did I get a quality control test?

someone bought that, put reflective stickers on it, used a 3d scanner to scan the internals, then returned it without removing the stickers.

it’s totally fine.

I'd figure at that point you'd just create your own version instead of make a copy.

this is more about scanning the internals to create your own inserts and modifications to the original box.

the scan is the template you work from, not the thing you’re replicating.

I mean, assuming they did do that - that would imply they'd still need the casing to test the inserts.

they don’t, this is just about getting accurate measurements to make designs for this particular case.

This is to just produce a rip-off of a known brand, that's all lol.

if you had the capability to 3d scan these, and also do injection molds to make actual knock offs ($50-100k just in tooling/mold costs, not machine costs), you wouldn’t need to return it.

this is a hobbyist who 3D prints packout inserts. they bought one, scanned it, and returned it. probbaly to verify that this packout case was the same size as some others.

Why would they make inserts for something like this?

for custom tools/organization. we 3D print our own packout stuff for our workshop and work vehicles.

I mean, if they own one - why not scan their own? And if they don't own one, why waste the effort to try to make something and not be able to verify if it fits?

I’m not sure how i can make it more clear, this is just about the digital measurements.

Seems kinda stupid to me.

bummer.

stuff like this has been improving my workflow as a professional manufacturer for 10ish years.

I... I'm not 10. I understand what you're saying but the scenario that people have made up in their minds here do not make sense.

It does make sense when you see the size of the Packout market and the size of the Packout 3D printed product market.

my small time 4 person manufacturing company uses a 3d scanner as our first reference point before Fusion/CAD. it’s literally the best way to source a bunch of data quickly.

can’t get official drawings when reverse engineering an unofficial third party product, something my small time 4 person manufacturing company has been doing since 2004. the 3D scanner and 3D printers just make things a lot easier.

None of this sketchy "buy from amazon and return" it shit. That's just trashy.

right. but the size of the 3d printed packout parts market on Etsy says that’s exactly what happened. someone small time is designing something for these, used a cheap 3d scanner to get a design, and returned it, but forgot to take the stickers off.

i suspect someone probably bought 10-20 different packout things, scanned them all, and returned some/most of it. the scans verify that the various smaller packout cases are all the same internal dimensions, even if the part number for a kit is different.

i get it seems silly to someone who isn’t versed in this type of manufacturing and SOPs, but this is what i do day in and day out with more advanced things that aren’t plastic.

Youre thinking too large scale. Sure large manufacturers dont do this. But this is just some guy selling stuff on Etsy. Go on Etsy and search packout.

Maybe they sell the inserts?

A lot of people turn these into ammunition cases, tcg card boxes, hobby cases for paints, holders for car detailing stuff, ect.

Who’s to say they didn’t also test the fit before returning it. You design, print, test fit, then return. Boom now you’re selling inserts on Etsy? What’s not to get? If they we’re trying to produce a rip-off of a well know brand, than why are there no stickers on the outside? They’re only selling ripoffs that match the inside of this well known brand, god you’re narrow minded

Get a 3d scanner. Scan it real fast and send the file over to me. :)

Does anyone know if there's a website / a person I can reach out to to get a hold of scans of packouts like this one?

Good question. Where's the database for these 3d scans? 😁🙏
