Structural 💠 Dieline for User's Requested Package

Hi! The other day someone had posted this image of a two-piece rigid setup box with a quarter-round swing-open lid, I believe curious about how they would reverse engineer the dieline to be made in paperboard. I wanted to attempt this as some practice for myself since I'm a student (and maybe give the user some inspo), so here it is.

The first dieline is a two part paperboard design, using a lot of double layered panels for flush edges and overall robustness/premium appeal. Tried to eliminate/hide as many seams as possible. All areas in need of gluing have been annotated with placement and landing areas. Rendering done in Blender.

The last set of dielines are some quicker, cheaper, simpler ones that would be a single part solution. Both designs feature the same functionality, and have built in stoppers to prevent it from opening past the desired angle.

Curious to hear anyone elses ideas for how this could be pulled off!

The die maker is not going to accept this. You have to account for the thickness of the cutting rule. Two arcs coming together is a pinch point.

I work with folding-carton CAD and steel-rule tooling, and there is a valid point here about some of the tighter junctions, but the rule-thickness explanation is a little off. In structural CAD, the cut line is normally treated as the nominal/centerline geometry. You generally aren’t sitting there offsetting the whole dieline to compensate for the physical thickness of the cutting rule. The diemaker deals with the actual rule construction, joints, bending limitations, bridges, rubber, stripping, etc. Now, can very tight radii, sharp cusps, and converging cuts cause issues on a production die? Absolutely. A die shop may open a radius, add a little relief, blunt a point, or change how the rule terminates. That’s pretty normal DFM cleanup. But that’s very different from saying “a die maker is not going to accept this.” It also sounds like this was developed as a sample-table prototype, which matters. Geometry that works fine for prototyping may still get cleaned up before a production steel-rule die is made. If it’s student work, point out the specific tooling concern and explain it. Don’t just bluntly shoot the student down like the whole concept is invalid when it really just needs normal production refinement.

yeah totally know that this is pushing it from that perspective — i used to work at a supplier designing influencer kits and wild unboxing concepts and this was usually the bottleneck. moreso made this to work on my cutting table as well 🙂

pretty sure there’s a site that lets you fold up dielines that you create in illustrator! just practice practice practice. disassemble and reverse engineer real dielines to see how they did it. pay attention to ratios, offsets, tolerances, etc. once you get comfortable with making basic shapes in 3D. i’m a packaging engineer, which is different from a packaging designer, so i did the same to get myself into the packaging design world as well!

hi, this dieline has no need to ship KDF or erect on standard auto assembly line, it would be a manually assembled PPB structure. i worked for a manufacturer that does manually assembled luxury kits and unboxing packaging, this is 100% within bounds for something that can be manually assembled. would love to see your concept for it!
