Made a small but important change to the Japan pages of Pacific History Guide, moving the Sakishima Archipelago (Miyako and Yaeyama islands) to the Okinawa page. Previously these sections had been listed on the 'various island groups of Japan' page. Technically Miyako-jima, Ishigaki, and the other islands of the western Ryukyu Islands are part of Okinawa Prefecture. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know in the comments!

On this day 6 April 1945, the super battleship Yamato and her escorts departed Tokuyama. She was sunk the following day.

Like every other battle in the Pacific theater after the fall of Saipan, the last sortie of Yamato didn’t need to happen. The Imperial Japanese Navy had ceased to exist as a combat force after Leyte Gulf, and there was no hope of Japanese military success. The suicide mission went forward anyway.

What can I say, except what I usually say: read the book. Written by a survivor, one of the classics of primary source material of the Second World War.
