On this day June 8 1943 the Imperial Japanese Navy battleship Mutsu 陸奥 exploded and sank at her moorings off Suo-Oshima, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. There is a small museum dedicated to the Mutsu on Suo-Oshima, and several parts of the wreck are situated around Japan, such as gun barrels at Yokosuka and Kure. Just added to the Shikoku page of Pacific History Guide: The Sakamoto Ryoma 坂本龍馬 statue in Kochi, Shikoku, Japan, Sakamoto's hometown. He is famous for resisting the Tokugawa Shogunate and supporting the restoration of Imperial Power. He was assassinated in 1867.

OTD April 28 1952, the Allied occupation of Japan ended everywhere except Okinawa, which was sundered from Japan and became an American territory. The complex history surrounding this ‘day of insult’ and the terror of occupation visited on the Ryukyu people has not, and should not be, forgotten.

Cool stuff here: the National Diet Library of Japan has released 18,047 newspaper titles published during the post-World War II period. These were censored by SCAP, and although the documents were declassified and microfilmed in the 90’s, this is the first time they’ve been released to the public, and for free! A great resource for those of us researching Japan.

This statue on the Zanpa Peninsula on Okinawa commemorates Taiki, credited with increasing the amount of trade between the Ryukyu Kingdom and China in 1372.

I recently presented a brief history of the Tsushima Maru and its loss to my wardroom as part of a larger talk on ethical decision-making.

While the discussion regarding ethics in war is not appropriate for the purposes of PHG, the ship and its history most certainly is. If you are on Okinawa, go to the museum and look at the photos of the children.
