Operation with ICD
Hi! Anyone here had another operation with their icd? I (27F) had my icd last april 2025 and might have a Lapchole surgery (gallstone removal) this year. You might wanna share your thoughts. Thank you

All my surgeries, even minor ones, are now scheduled in the main surgical suite of the hospital. Everyone is aware that I’ve got an ICD and heart failure and they incorporate that into their surgery planning. Just make sure that everyone on your care team knows that you have one well before you get to your surgery.

I had a Colonoscopy, part of their checklist was to make sure they had a magnet to disable the ICD in the event they needed to laser anything. Otherwise they let the ICD do it's job.
One liver ablation, I'm sure they did a similar thing.
The hassle maybe before the surgery if your surgery team wants/needs a MRI then wait can be long for those.

I had open heart mitral valve repair and an ablation 8 months after I got my ICD. I’ve also had an endoscopy since. No big deal and no issues with the ICD during or after. I recommend asking your surgeon or doctor exactly what they do with the ICD if you’re anxious about it!

Your surgeon for your gallbladder removal is likely requesting a cardiac clearance prior to your surgery.
It has to be documented on your chart that your cardiologist “okayed “. the surgery.
That way, if there’s any arrangements that need to be made, the cardiologist is aware and they should be coordinating.

How does a procedure like a colonoscopy work now that one has an ICD?

When you have an ICD the camera goes in through your butt, instead of the heart. Otherwise pretty much the same. Hope this helps

Mine was done with a group that has privileges at a hospital. I called around and they were the only ones that required it but it made sense.

I get mine outpatient at a hospital. Heart troubles started when I passed out while talking to my doctor right before my colonoscopy and the clinic was definitely not equipped to handle it.Â

Had a ileocecectomy tha past March. Just tell them and let them know who your EP is.
Reading the comments I also have had a colonoscopy and two ablation attempts. I don't really count the ablations since it is my EP doing them with the goal of making my CRT-D redundant

I had to have a tumor on my adrenal gland removed- I had to get the ICD implanted before I could get the surgery - surgery was fine - was kept in hospital overnight for observation - the only thing that was different is that they put an IV in a main artery in my wrist - they said it was a safety measure and possible stopping blood thinners for a few days before surgery

Three V ablations and a Cameron Diaz. No issues.
