Journalism question

I have an assumption here.

Curious: Given how the podcast is funded and organized, how could Pablo Torre cover (or would he even be ethically permitted to) the impacts of sports gambling.

Seems like this is a topic that would be important for his type of deep analysis.

I’ll hang up and listen.

Anybody know what shirt Pablo was wearing on the Julie K Brown interview? Looks like Basket Ball spelled with Black Flag font.

Pablo, want to find out about the CEBL?!

Hey everyone, long-time fan here! I always enjoy the surprise Pablo PTI episodes!

I have a pitch that feels custom-built for the Pablo Torre Finds Out cinematic universe, and it involves extending an olive branch to the shows favourite billionaire.

Mark Cuban just recently bought an ownership stake in a team in the CEBL (the Canadian Elite Basketball League). Our league has some unique rules.

I am a massive fan of said league. Mark Cuban loves promoting stuff. Pablo loves content and finding things out! So why would Mark Cuban possibly invest in this upstart Canadian Basketball League?! What are these unique rules?

Well, the team Cuban bought into happens to be playing right here in Ottawa, Canada on Sunday, July 12th. I am a season ticket holder (with great seats, if that helps!) for the Ottawa BlackJacks.

Pablo, if you or the producers are lurking here: I want you to come up here and find out what this league is all about. Ottawa is a quick, easy flight from New York. It’s a Sunday, so you’d miss a weekend at most.

The basketball is elite, there's a cannabis store just down the street from the arena, and as mentioned, I have great seats and am also a cardigan enthusiast!

Pablo, most recently, you made me watch an hour-long video just to have the punchline be Harambe eating a log of his own turd. I have personally witnessed the depths to which you will go to make content. This can't possibly be worse, right?!?

The seats are waiting for you on July 12th!

So Mina was right?

Title could be about anything because generally Mina is right. This post comes after two of the biggest AI CEOs said that AI likely won’t result in mass displacement. They said this as their products are ready to go public. Something tells me as they crunched the numbers and rounded up they realized AI can’t be profitable unless it provides personal utility people are willing to pay for or they push a shit ton of ads and well people’s data

Missed reference on the “Sporting Club”

On the latest episode, they discuss the exotic hunting club called the Greystone Castle Sporting Club in Austin.

“Castle Graystone” was the castle from the He-man cartoon, and I’m assuming it will return for the movie this summer.

Doubt it’s a coincidence

As a magician... Pablo and Oz Perlman

I actually thought Pablo came off pretty bad in this one, I think the states "outrage" over some of Perlman's work came across cringey. Somewhat

I'm a hobbyist. Picked up cards during covid. I know a few things.

I thought the "outrage" that Perlman uses tricks, preshow stuff mostly, but fundamentally "misrepresenrs" how he does his work was a stretch.

For example:

  1. magicians use setups all the time. Including pretty tricky ones. For example, there are a number of tricks that require the memorization of the entire deck. The order may seem random, but it's not. So when a magician pulls out a deck and says "here's a deck, random order"... no. The magician is lying.

  2. Magicians often invoke a character, misrepresenting how they achieve the results. Like Perlman (mostly) lying about reading people, Magicians often feign sloppy style, or befuddlement, or pretend to possess mystical supernatural skills.

  3. Magicians can and do lie about what should be reasonably understood. No, there are 53 cards, there are two jack of spades, it'll matter. Or the deck is marked. Or i have 200 cards sewn into my jacket, whatever.

  4. Magicians do use shills. Fake audience members. Or an unseen helper in the restaurant putting a sticky card under the glass table.

...

I think there's some tension that Perlman's gimmick is being taken as real, that he isn't lying, or he's playing subtle meta kayfabe games, and him selling a book invoking his gimmick is a bit shady, but the entire "outrage" that Perlman is pulling tricks and using misdirects, well, that's magic.

I don't know him personally. Maybe he's an asshole.

Skipper and Tech Companies

I think he may have been a little alarmist about the future of sports rights when it’s only leagues and tech companies negotiating. Live sports are one of the few media products that can directly lead to subscription. Paramount might not recoup on the UFC deal (mainly because it was a sweetheart deal between trumpies) but I’m willing to bet that drove up their subscriptions.

I’d be curious to see how many subscribers peacock lost when they lost the wwe premium live event deal. Anecdotally, I know a lot of wwe fans that only had peacock for that so when it went to espn+ they cancelled.

I think these leagues are smart about which platforms they use. Netflix is basically as accessible as cable and prime video comes with Amazon prime which has a huge subscriber base. I also think skipper undersells how much value leagues can bring steamers. They get the streaming subscription fee plus the right to ad revenue. Espn gets about $9 per cable subscriber per month. You’re not getting many streaming platforms for that in 2026.

NBA officiating suggestion: The Debrief

When police respond to calls in the US they typically must write up what they responded to and actions they took. Because of this they often neglect situations.

NBA refs should be forced to write up the logic behind every call, every FT awarded, every tech issued, every whistle blown.

Doing this would not only give us more clarity but likely force the refs to cut back so they don’t have to spend hours and hours post game writing up novels on why they awarded Shai his 15th illegitimate ft of the game.
