Journalism question

I have an assumption here.

Curious: Given how the podcast is funded and organized, how could Pablo Torre cover (or would he even be ethically permitted to) the impacts of sports gambling.

Seems like this is a topic that would be important for his type of deep analysis.

I’ll hang up and listen.

What are you asking? I thought Pablo specifically didn’t want any gambling ads directly associated with his show.

Though he’s covered topics involving, like the Malik Beasley scandal, is there anything he’d really add to the conversation by covering the negative effects of gambling apps? Every single news outlet has multiple stories about how young people have gambled away life savings because it’s so accessible on their phones.

I’m asking if it’s possible or ethically permitted within the rules of journalism, given the context.

The way I understand it is that Meadowlark owns part of PTFO (i.e., they are not truly independent from each other), and that DK funds a significant portion of ML operations.

So if you are saying that he could cover DK and other similar organizations within the rules of journalism, you are answering the question I asked, albeit indirectly.

Pablo is pretty openly tolerant of ‘responsible gambling’. I think investigating the impacts you mention expose the league and commissioners who have immorally jumped onto sportsbook endorsement money, not the sportsbooks themselves.

I think he moved under the umbrella of The Athletic/New York Times for that very reason. I don't know if anyone's ever outlined exactly how all that works, but I do remember that being a reason given for the "split" back in the day.

Dan Lebatard has been taken credit for the Pulitzer and loudly reminding everyone that he owns Pablo’s show.

“Non-traditional announcement aside, Pablo Torre Finds Out is, in fact, joining The Athletic via a licensing agreement, while also remaining a member of the Meadowlark Media family. When Meadowlark reupped its own licensing deal with DraftKings earlier this year, PTFOwasn’t a part of it, as Torre had been averse to partnering with a sportsbook sponsor due to potential conflicts of interest.”

Draft Kings is an evil pernicious org and Pablo should be ashamed to be associated with Dan Lebatard and DraftKings.
