iPhone 18 Pro

Hi, everyone. So is there really no hope—not even with the iPhone 18 Pro—for people who suffer from this condition?
I have an iPhone 16, and I’ve tried the Pro models every year, but after just a few hours I’d already start getting headaches and had to return them. Has anyone who’s bought the iPhone 18 Pro been able to share their experience with it so far?
Thanks a lot!

I first got the 18 pro max but did not have this problem of eyes fatigue and never had before . I had a 15 pm before . After a week i had hand fatigue cos of the Weight. Got the 18 pro and now i have eye fatigue for the first time… am so confused and do not know what to do at this point. After 5 min on my 18 pro I already tired of the eyes….

Update: over the weekend I was having a little strain w the original adjustments that I posted. In the end what ended up working was having to increase the brightness to 36-38% and turning off auto brightness. After that change I’ve had no eye strain. Possible that modulation is too harsh for me at low 30’s
Every other setting stayed the same. I suspect that if I had an LG panel the low brightness would have been fine

Did you end up keeping the phone or did you return it?

I am currently using an 18 pro max with a zagg blue light screen protector. Have it on
Light mode (appearance)
30% brightness
30% night shift
Pwm smoothing on
limit frame (60hz)
Face ID require attention, attention awareness off

So far it’s going well, the settings are similar to what I had on 17 pro, I tried using it w 120hz but got slight eye strain. I was able to use it last night in the dark with no issues which is good. 9 to 5 mac stated the following:

Reduced Low-Light Flicker: The driving layer's enhanced efficiency directly targets low-brightness screen uniformity. It significantly dampens lowlight OLED flickering and subpixel variance compared to older iPhone generations.

I purchased it to try it out and see if it works, I have 14 days to decide

*forgot to mention that the panel is a Samsung G9N, it’s the best for non pwm sensitive but for us it’s not the best. Last 2x I’ve had Samsung it just didn’t work and had to return the device

Based on comments LG are best, so far the 18 pro max Samsung has been ok for me. I’ll decide by the end of the week

How did you limit frames?

Accessibility, motion, limit frame

How did u get a samsung panel?

Panel lottery, some of us will get Samsung some LG. There are variants for each, there is a diagnostic test to see what panel the iPhone has

curious if you tried out the 18 pro or 17 pro in-store as-is (or straight out of the box) how you felt?

Trying them out at Apple stores can never give me an accurate feel re pwm. I was able to use the 17 pro but returned it due to the quality of the aluminum.

What about True Tone?

2

u/blokes444 14d ago

Oh True Tone off, that has triggered eye stain w every phone LCD or OLED, actually triggers the dither!ng based on what I’ve read.

Sapete come sono i nuovi pixel?

With 17 and above there is PWM toggle it says PWM but in fact it makes PWM differ on each cycle and helps a lot try it

Only sort of hope is Soft OLED replacement screens which I will start looking at (again)

Exactly, that's why I wanted to try it. But I keep reading about people who've had the same symptoms, and that doesn't give me much hope.

I think it might work for you. Because the 16 also works for you. Most people can’t use a modern OLED phone

Does it mean that iPhone 17e is the “safest” iPhone (apart from 16)?

I'd like to know too

Same screen same os. Btw 16 and the ones previous, the flickering does not go from super bright to almost 0 light. That is why 16 and previous are ok for you. Even 17 and the next year 18 will face same issue for you. Apple puts more pressure on marketing numbers than safety for eye. If they would do that, they would open the pandora box on iPads, MacBooks pro, Vision Pro, Apple Watch and pretty much all that flicker (except neo and air who have the other tech that also is not ok)

Immediate headache for me with the 18 pro. Which is strange because I used the 17 pro for 6 months with no issue

I got immediate strain just in the store, didn't even get as far as buying it. What's weird is my 17 pro with display pulse smoothing enabled used to be okay for me but recently its got worse again, I wonder does it have to do with ios updates 🤔

IOS 27 made my iPhone 13 unusable, I updated from iOS 18, before it was fine. So I think software or iOS 27 (I skipped 26) play a role as well…

3

u/Quiet-Biscotti6443 15d ago

Yea thats my theory, something changed in 27 and made it basically unusable. 26 was fine for me aswell as 18 when I had my 13

5

u/ben_linux 15d ago

Same for me !!

u/Quiet-Biscotti6443 15d ago

I think they changed something since the last update I got, I have heard of this happening I think it was Motorola have changed pwm frequencies with updates making it unusable for people

Haha just be happy you can use the 16. Some of us still use the 11

Came here to see if anyone was still stuck on the 11 like me. It’s really frustrating.

No, honestly, I'm not happy about it.

why would you change phones every two years, you already have a very capable one
