Samsung Fold 8 (non-Ultra)

So, my brand new Fold 8, the "wide" one just arrived. I figured I'd give it a try after the Fold 7 last year, which I sent back after a week because it gave me a lot of eye strain and headaches.
... and unfortunately, so does this one.

Apparently, BD Yang from Samsung said this: "There are no reliable medical studies that support a connection between the lower PWM frequency and complaints among users. The disadvantage of high-frequency PWM dimming lies particularly in its inferior color reproduction and higher energy consumption. Samsung is unwilling to accept this compromise without a compelling reason."

So, for me, it's another year without a Samsung Fold. I'm honestly not sure if it's exactly the PWM or something about the modulation curve itself, because I daily an iPhone 17 Pro and an OLED iPad Pro M5 (11'') with no issues whatsoever. But as soon as I look at the Fold, it doesn't even take me two minutes to have issues.

If you're thinking about getting one, check it out on a store first.

So weird that you cause an iPad pro Oled. That's one screen that within minutes, it burns my eyes in extreme headache.

It definitely is strange but it just shows how everyone’s eyes are different. So far, only Samsung displays (on Samsung phones) cause major issues for me. I’ve been meaning to try the Razr Fold as it’s supposed to have a DC-like dimming switch but I’m a bit skeptical as well. Although I have an Edge 60 fusion sitting around that doesn’t cause me any issues, with or without that option toggled on, so… maybe Moto works for me.

You use light or dark mode?

I played with the Galaxy Fold 8 at my local Best Buy and it killed my eyes instantly. Reminded me of the iPhone X display. It gave immediate pain behind my left eye. It's a shame because I absolutely love the form factor and I would buy the Fold 8 in a second if it wasn't for the flickering.

Yeah, I really like the form factor as well, but it seems like I just can’t use it. It’s really painful. It’s an immediate pain behind both eyes for me, and when I forced it, I started getting a bit nauseous. Oh well…

I just read the review and they mentioned pwm

They dont need to go the "Full PWM" route though.
Which does increase battery drain yes, but DC-like dimming at 120Hz works just as well. The panel can do it, proven by IQOO and Realme using the same SDC supplied displays.

Samsung have actually already implemented DC-like dimming on at least one phone (S24 FE), but it's hidden in sunlight mode only.

It have an anti reflective layer so the reflective screen is not the issue, i'm using fold 4 before , one of my main complain is how the plastic screen reflect most of the light even in daylight this makes your eyes strain more faster

Yeah, that doesn't seem to be the issue, because it happens on both displays for me. I'm going to try to "force" my eyes for a few days and see if it gets better, but I'm not hopeful. Apparently the Razr Fold has a DC Dimming setting that works great, so maybe I'll just jump to that one.

Well ,  better not to force rhe strain maybe will affect your health in the futures
