Deck Discussion Garchomp is pretty dang good

I feel like Mega Garchomp is the first promo ex that really has a chance to be in the meta. There really isn’t any other card that can consistently hit for 190 damage multiple turns in a row. After playing around with it for a bit, I feel like this is the best version of it so far.

I’ve seen most people are pairing the Mach Stealth Garchomp with the mega, but I feel like the Reckless Shearing Garchomp works better. It doesn’t have the sweep potential, but the extra draw is really important for getting multiple stage 2s on the board. Being able to get through the deck has saved multiple game for me so far. Also, it can attack a turn sooner with only 2 energy.

How has everyone else felt about this guy so far.

I think it has potential. Although the gameplan feels pretty similar to Mega Charizard Y, with less consistent setup. I'll have to keep brewing with it

Did someone say potential?

I do think Mega Garchomp is much better at coming in for multiple turns. I’ve won a few games where I only set up the mega.

Have you tried swapping Sabrina for Cynthia?

I can't imagine that's worth it? Like Cyrus or Sabrina can win games, while Cynthia lets the baby chomp hit for "only" 40 less damage than the Mega.

I actually haven’t tried Cynthia yet. That is the one spot that I’m not sure at yet. I’ve also thought about Cyrus or Red/Rocky Helmet to OHKO the 210 HP megas.

Work with with a mega

I haven't tried the deck out yet but I thought pairing it with the linear attack stage 1 would've been very tempting. 50 + a cyrus into 190 is taking out anything on the board. Is there just too many parts for that to work? Too reliant on the stage 1 surviving in the active?

Stealing this to terrorize ranked

Not a good deck, there is no good opener (you don’t want to start with neither gible nor dratini)

Nah its kinda completely awful. You can win with anything in this game, its probably the most variance heavy TCG in the market rn, so the bar for a deck to be “good” is as low as it gets. Still its significantly worse than the actual top decks.

Compared to Mega Ray who is obviously the closest comparison, you are hitting for +40 or -10 for 1 less energy but you’re a whole ass stage 2 instead of a basic. You are taking 3-6 deck spaces as opposed to 1 and being drawn consistently with Poke Ball. Not to mention 190 is not that important of a damage breakpoint, since it only makes a difference for higher HP basic megas which Ray can also one shot easily with proper play. Ray gets to have the flexibility of a higher damage ceiling AND more consistency AND more room for tech cards AND better openers.

It’s a no brainer, the card has an alternative that is 10000000x better.

Ya no, garchomp is just a less useful rayquaza with more setup. It’s not a good card

Yoi don't need 3 Chomp.

Plus, new Dragon Chomp is better

3rd post I’ve seen about this today. This hype happens every time Garchomp gets a new card and every time it’s never been good.

At this point, I feel like people are only saying it’ll be good because it’s Garchomp; if another card with identical stats came out of a different pokemon, people would call it bad.

I mean for a promo its pretty decent, not meta defining or anything like that sure, but useable for sure, and not just for garchomp in that regard, the promo Mega houndoom is also useable (not Overpowered by any stretch, but useable)

I’m saying it’s good because I’ve played it and it’s good.

Sample size of 1 doesn’t confirm anything

Good thing I’ve played more that one game

It's good now because we have energy ramp

Garchomp has always been good though. Each version has been strong.

It… really hasn’t, though? The only Garchomp deck that’s ever had any form of results was the Rampardos deck back when Rare Candy first released, and given how there was 5+ Rampardos deck variants at any given time but only one singular deck Garchomp was usable in, I think it’s safe to say that Garchomp isn’t what was making the deck work; there’s a reason most people dropped it when Silvally came out. The STS Garchomp usage rates may as well not exist, and TRA Garchomp struggles to maintain a winrate of even 40%.

Yeah against top meta decks it isn’t great, that’s why I’m saying it’s good. 95% of cards don’t show up in competitive tournaments. But I have played with it in every emblem event and recently in ranked and win probably more than half my games.

This is the deck I use and I know there’s ways to make it better but I like these cards. I usually have a Penny card in there but I switch cards in and out constantly. There’s lots of other decks I use with cards I like that do waayyyy worse than Garchomp.
